Chapter 21 - A New Position

Olivia

Olivia dedicated the weekend to the daunting task of settling into the apartment Ethan generously offered. It was situated in a luxurious building just a stone's throw away from Jameson Enterprises, which was undeniably convenient for her daily commute. As she stepped inside, the luxury of the apartment took her breath away.

The spacious living room was adorned with plush, cream-colored sofas, and a magnificent crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting soft, warm light over the room. An elegant marble fireplace graced one wall, adding to the overall sophistication of the space. The coffee table was an exquisite piece of polished mahogany adorned with fresh flowers in a gorgeous crystal vase.

The dining area was no less extravagant, featuring a large mahogany dining table surrounded by upholstered chairs in rich, deep red hues. The adjacent kitchen was a modern marvel, boasting top-of-the-line appliances and gleaming granite countertops.

As Olivia explored the rest of the apartment, she discovered it was fully furnished with a keen sense of style and attention to detail. The bedrooms featured large, comfortable beds adorned with plush, inviting bedding. The main bedroom was decorated in calming blues and grays, while the guest room was adorned with cheerful pastels.

For Olivia, moving into such an elegant, fully furnished apartment was a significant change from her previous living situation. She was overwhelmed by Ethan's generosity and couldn't help but feel an unspoken connection between them, which only deepened her intrigue.

Maybe it was his confidence, or perhaps it was something else. Whatever it was, Olivia had been unable to resist the pull of his attention. She tried to rationalize her feelings for Ethan. She thought maybe it was just lust. She wasn't sure if that was true or not. There was chemistry there, but she wasn't sure she could trust it. Would this be a short-lived thing?

She began to unpack the few things she had brought from home. She decided to lounge on her new sofa. It was soft and comfortable. She sat there for a few minutes, thinking over her day. She wondered if things were moving a little fast with Ethan. She was feeling things for him that were hard to understand.

Monday finally rolled around, and it was time to go to work. Olivia made her way to the top floor and hesitated for a moment before stepping into Ethan's office. She knew that managing her growing connection with Ethan at work would be challenging, especially considering his role as her boss. As she entered his office, she was taken aback by the scene before her.

There, standing by Ethan's desk, was Barbara. She was wearing a figure-hugging dress that left little to the imagination. Olivia felt a pang of discomfort as she observed the situation.

Anxiously awaiting Olivia's arrival, Ethan greeted her with a deep, husky voice, "Come in."

Now, Olivia had to navigate not only her complicated feelings for Ethan but also the presence of Barbara, which only added another layer of tension to her already complex situation. She tried maintaining her composure and wondered how to manage this challenging work dynamic.

Barbara, noticing the way Ethan's gaze shifted to Olivia, couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. She sensed that there might be more to his relationship with Olivia than was immediately apparent. In an attempt to regain his attention, she spoke up.

"EJ," Barbara began, her tone dripping with faux sweetness, "I truly believe I'm the ideal candidate for the position. I'm willing to go above and beyond to meet your needs." She hoped that emphasizing her dedication would sway him.

Ethan, however, met her request with annoyance. He had already made his decision, and Barbara's persistence wasn't making the situation any better. "I'm sorry, Barbara," he replied firmly, "but the position has already been filled. Please focus on the East Coast project reports and ensure they're on my desk by this evening."

Barbara was left with a sour taste in her mouth, feeling defeated and perhaps a bit jealous of the connection she sensed between Ethan and Olivia. Her icy glare as she passed by didn't go unnoticed by Olivia. She felt that Barbara might become a problem in the future.

"Olivia," Ethan called, bringing her out of her musings. You arrived just in time for your new position. "My new position?" she stammered, somewhat shocked by the unexpected offer.

Ethan nodded and continued, "Yes, my secretary has been very unreliable these last few months, so I let her go over the holidays. The position requires someone who can work closely with me, and I believe you would be perfect for the job."

Olivia hesitated for a moment before finally voicing her concern. "Ethan," she started, "Do you really think it's a good idea, considering everything that's happening between us?"

Ethan leaned back in his chair, a playful glint in his eyes as he chuckled. "Oh, Olivia, we're adults. I'm sure we can keep things professional," he replied with a mischievous grin, suggesting he might not be taking it as seriously as Olivia.

"Let's try this on a trial basis," Olivia declared, taking a cautious approach. "Besides, I'm not sure if I have the skills to keep up with the demands of the job."

Ethan reassured her, "Olivia, you can do it. You'll need to answer the phones, take notes when needed, help keep my files in order, and handle any miscellaneous tasks that come up."

Olivia continued to express her concerns, asking about her other responsibilities. Ethan replied, "You can cover both roles until I find someone to fill your previous position. You will need to move your office, though. There's a desk right outside my office, and that's where you'll be stationed."

Ethan smiled and responded, "Did I mention that it comes with a hefty pay raise?"

Feeling overwhelmed by his generosity, Olivia began, "Ethan, that's not necessary. You've been more generous than I deserve already."

Ethan's gaze remained unwavering as he said, "Olivia, I'm willing to give you the world."

Olivia smiled and replied, "Okay, Ethan. No funny business at work. We should take this slow and figure out what's happening between us."

Ethan chuckled and agreed, "No problem, beautiful."

With that, Olivia headed to her new desk, determined to navigate the unknown territory of their evolving relationship, ready to embrace whatever it might bring.
