They didn't care about the meaning of life, whether it was to live or die, it was utterly inconsequential to them.
If a servant could live, he could do the dirty work they didn't want to do.
The man could then validate his own existence and necessity.
But if another man were to live, he would seize the wealth that belonged to them.
Of course, these knights would not tolerate such a thing.
