The Chinese academic name Lycoris radiata, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, the term "red spider lily" comes from the Lotus Sutra. Its original name is Mokou Manjusaka, meaning red flower that blooms in the heavenly realm. It also has other names such as "golden lantern," "red arrow," and "dragon claw flower." Among its many monikers, the most famous is "Higanbana," an ominous title.
