The light cavalry were generally used as the eyes of the troops for forward reconnaissance, although they occasionally also performed the functions of the Curved Knife cavalry, but overall, they were independent reconnaissance soldiers, forming a part of the Charlemagne Army's forward reconnaissance force along with the Beast divisions. On the battlefield, they played the role of a mobile reserve force. In contrast, as a branch of the light cavalry, the primary job of the Curved Knife cavalry was to serve as assault forces. These cavalry, dressed in splendid attire, wielding Curved Knives, and riding the finest steeds, therefore faced extremely high casualty rates. A popular saying in the Charlemagne Army was that if a Curved Knife cavalry survived a year of war without being killed, they weren't a Curved Knife cavalry; they were useless.
