In Göethe's masterpiece "Faust," Dr. Faust made a bet with the devil Mephistopheles, who would satisfy all of Faust's demands as long as Faust ceased his pursuit and exclaimed, "Halt!" His soul would then belong to Mephistopheles. In the final moment, the doctor did indeed utter the line above as the devil had wished, and the devil won the gamble. As for what happened after, whether it was a happy ending or a BAD END, none of that mattered. The point was that the devil won the bet.
This was an inevitable outcome.
Human desires are bottomless and endless; even 100 or 1000 wishes could not satisfy human greed—this statement in itself is not wrong. For the human race, desires indeed are never-ending. But when it comes to an individual with a finite lifespan, it is a completely different matter.
