"If we stop now to negotiate peace, all our efforts up to this point will have been in vain! The citizens will not accept such a thing! Soldiers spilling their blood on the front lines are even less likely to accept it! It would be like stabbing them in the back!!"
This was clearly a typical declaration from the military, and if it had indeed come from a soldier—more precisely, from the army staff—it wouldn't have been surprising. Fools with nothing but war on their minds, and anyone who dares to stand in their way is surely a "traitor stabbing them in the back," a traitor that must be "punished by heaven."
