This new weapon was akin to ultra-long-range artillery, but with much greater destructive power. During simultaneous volleys, it could pose a definite threat to large, city-level targets.
Now, 40 FZG-76 missiles were flying in formation over the skies of Charlemagne, heading directly for the central city of Orleans in Charlemagne.
The straight-line distance from Saint-Die to Orleans was about 376 kilometers, almost equal to the maximum range of the FZG76. After three midflight navigational adjustments, when they finally arrived at this historic city, only a few seconds of flight time remained. Factors such as weather and mechanical failures meant that only 32 cruise missiles ultimately reached the airspace above Orleans.
Even so, that was already sufficient.
The citizens of Orleans stopped their work and looked towards the sky, all hearing a massive, insect-like buzzing sound, driven by curiosity to peer upwards from under their awnings.
