At this location, one could see the armored assault battalion, either using tank destroyers to make up the numbers where there were insufficient tanks to break through the opposing position, or coordinating with infantry to consolidate positions, or forming a second line of defense to cover the retreat of troops.
The armored units of the Wehrmacht had hardly shown themselves, and were hardly discussed in terms of losses; a defensive line that could be breached at any moment posed no threat to them. Covering the retreat of the troops seemed the most likely, but why now?
