Destroying bridges and blocking roads are common tactics in urban combat. The Wehrmacht had committed limited forces to this coup, and in order to narrow the front and connect the occupied areas as much as possible, that was all they could do. Even so, their forces were still stretched thin.
Their ability to break through several blockades earlier was entirely due to the insufficient troops committed and the incomplete facilities involved. It's not surprising that the enemy, who was mobile and familiar with the terrain and combat style, breached defenses that lacked depth and firepower.
