The Der Große, with an airplane-like silhouette, operated on flying mechanisms quite different from those of airplanes. No matter how you looked at it, a metal lump weighing hundreds of thousands of tons, even equipped with ultra-long wings like the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and an aerodynamic design for high-altitude flights, could only glide slowly across the ground under normal circumstances, even with the engines at full power and the emergency acceleration of a jet spell.
