Regency politics, à la "curtain government," had appeared before in Charlemagne's history. The Empress Dowager Medici, who set off the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, was one such example. Hence, the people of Charlemagne could easily accept a regent princess—after all, this was far more approachable than any "Empress Dowager." As for the other two heirs to the throne, they naturally went where they were meant to go.
