Under the concerted cover fire of field artillery and infantry in line, the assault troops marched over soil and corpses that had filled the moat, bypassing a large cannon half sunken in the mud, through the smoking breach and into Buda City. Not a single rebel charged out from the rubble to fire at them; amidst a deathly silence, a golden iris banner rose above the city walls. More soldiers began to advance, pouring through the breach into the city.
"Our forces have entered Buda City, you have achieved a brilliant victory, General."
Brigadier Vilar congratulated Hainau with great enthusiasm, but the face of the admiral of the artillery remained as impassive as a slab of iron, impossible to read, though his waxed, cowhorn moustache was trembling slightly. Clearly, his mood was not too bad.
