Karl John Lorenz Habsburg, the esteemed Archduke of Austria, pressed hard on the bridge of his nose. After temporarily relieving the sour sensation in his eyes, he issued a new order under the dim light. The message concerned the routines of peddlers, army dependents, and prostitutes moving with the military— no individual accompanying the soldiers was to make noise or move about after the lights-out call. Anyone breaking the rule was to receive 30 lashes; roosters owned by the army wives were not to crow before 9 a.m. to prevent giving away the troops' locations. Any roosters not adhering to this command were to be culled ruthlessly.
This order seemed a bit nonsensical, but the Archduke was far from jesting.
