For centuries, the border line between Castile and Charlemagne was in the crucible of war. Battlefields sat across the Pyrenees boundary like meat grinders, claiming countless young lives from both nations. However, peace came at a high cost - nearly an entire generation of young men.
After analysis of the bitter battles during the peaceful post-war period, both nations' military forces realized that the war could not continue. So, they chose to build a robust, continuous defense line along the border in an attempt to stave off enemy attacks, wear down their forces, and win time to mobilize the entire nation and form alliances for a counteroffensive.
