Before any of these ideas could be realized, the officers would never allow the combat troops to lose their offensive spirit in the passive trench warfare. They believed that trench warfare was an erosion of morale, and in order to maintain morale, they refused to let the troops feel too safe and comfortable in the trenches, unwilling to leave and refuse to participate in the battle. While the front-line soldiers were risking their lives to construct fortifications, some officers were trying to prevent the troops from obtaining enough materials to build defenses, so as not to let the soldiers make the trenches too comfortable.
