When these words come together, what immediately springs to mind is undoubtedly a luxury hotel. However, at the moment, they describe the dining room of a military ship.
It has to be said, regardless of the country, navies are quite particular about food and drink. On one hand, they have more access to provisions than the army; on the other, naval forces engage in more foreign activities, and it would be problematic if they couldn't provide decent food when foreign guests visit the ship. And finally, poor diet can easily lead to scurvy—a common issue among youngsters with a mouthful of rotten teeth in those times. To preserve fighting capability, attention must be paid to the quality of food.
