Chapter 26 - tired of pretense

"And to what do I owe this pleasure of having to speak to the king of Sitian?." Clara asked. Her hair was as black as his brother's and they were of the same height. Though their looks were different, by a closer look, one could see the subtle similarities between the two. When it came to their personalities, there was a huge gap between them. Clara had always been the nice one. Her character was one thing that was admired by many and even though she was a noble, she just had her way with people hence making her the approachable one.

When it came to Lucas, it was a different case. His words were always unfiltered and only on a few occasions would he sugarcoat his words. His character was always wayward. Difficult to control and yet that was one of the things that allured women.

"She wants to kill my soulmate Clara and in as much as I want to reserve her for you, I can't watch her snatch her away from me." There was a cold glint in those midnight eyes and for once in decades, Clara saw a flash of emotions that she had not seen from his brother for years. As a young boy, he grew up in the battlefield. There were just too many expectations from him and with the years he spent away from them, he bacame indifferent towards everything and everyone he knew but with what he had just said, there was that spark that was extinguished long ago causing a smile to break from Clara's lips.

"So, you found her. It must be that maid that you personally brought here." Clara commented. Her eyes were on his brother's back who was still staring at nothing in particular through the window. "Have you told her about your tied fate?"

"She will find out on her own." Even with his response, Lucas didn't turn to face his sister. He never thought that he would ever have such strong feelings for anyone. Those large brown eyes that were always filled with curiosity and care appeared in the images of his memory. She was a beautiful girl who knew nothing about how ugly this world was. In three days, the full moon would appear and he wouldn't need to do anything.

"I am trying to move on Luke. I want to let go. You can do whatever you want to do with her."

"I will be sure to make her pay." With that, Lucas walked out of the room. Clara who watched her brother disappearing through the door took a deep breath whereby a single drop of tear fell from the corner of her eye. She wanted to live a life that wasn't filled with regrets yet some memories kept on haunting her and the more she tried to forget, the more she remembered.

"Luke dear, I have been looking all over for you." It was lady Victoria who saw her son walking towards the courtroom and Lucas stopped and turned around to face his mother. That empty smile that he always had was on his face revealing the dimple that was on his left cheek. His hair that had been neatly combed a few hours back was slightly ruffled and just as usual, he made no effort to tame it.

"Mother, is something wrong?"

"Not really. I just wanted to see you." The way that lady Victoria was looking at him was somehow odd. It was as if she wanted to decipher whatever was hidden behind those eyes and Lucas gave her the satisfaction by staring back at her.

"Well, now that you have seen me, I should go to the courtroom.... unless you have something else to say to me." Their gazes were still locked and after a second or two, lady Victoria looked away. Her smile broke into a laugh before she finally replied. "I thought that I did a good job with erasing your memories."

"You should have known.. mmh. For a witch, I can admit that you are really slow." It had been years of pretending to love this woman but now that she had removed off her mask, Lucas didn't see the need to keep his on either. "I thought that you could have known that your silly spells didn't work on me the moment that I didn't crown you as the mother queen."
