I stood there, caught off guard by the sudden heaviness of her question. What could I even say? So, I stayed silent for a while, just staring at her with a puzzled expression.
After taking a deep breath, I finally said, "No, I don't."
Ara looked disappointed, tears welling up. "Really? But you were there with me when my daddy died. You really didn't see anything?"
What was with this sudden interrogation? It felt like she wanted me to say yes. Why was this topic coming up now?
"No, I don't. It was too dark to see anything, and I was there hunting a monster," I explained, trying to sound convincing.
Ara didn't respond immediately; she played with her fingers. After a couple of minutes, she uttered, "I see," in a voice filled with sorrow.
"Why bring this up all of a sudden, Ara?" I sat beside her, trying to read her lowered face.
"I... I just miss my daddy," she said, still in tears.
