41She shivered as she walked down the street, her stomach growling with hunger. She didn't know how long it had been since she last ate, and she didn't even remember where she had come from. All she knew was that she had to keep walking, even though her tired feet begged her to stop. And then, she saw it -- a piece of bread, lying in the dirt. She hesitated for a moment, then picked it up and brushed off the dirt. She took a bite, relishing the taste and the feeling of food in her stomach.
As she ate, the she noticed that she was being watched. A man stood across the street, his face shrouded in shadow.
She shrank back, afraid, but he called out to her. "Are you hungry, child?" he asked, his voice deep and gentle.
The girl nodded, her eyes wide. "Come with me," the man said, holding out his hand. "I have food and a warm bed for you."
