The merchant, Mr. Greenleaf, stands on the front step of the Viscount's home, his patience running thin. He has been waiting for hours, and still no one has come to answer the door. He knows that the Viscount is inside, but it seems as though he is deliberately ignoring him. Mr. Greenleaf is at his wit's end. He has lent a large sum of money to the Beatrice, with the understanding that she would use it to purchase the finest sand for her new art studio. But when she has gone to collect her money, she has refused to pay him back. In fact, she has laughed in his face and tells him that the money is gone, spent on frivolities and pleasures. Mr. Greenleaf is outraged. Not only has he been swindled out of his money, but the Viscount has done nothing to stop his stepdaughter's reckless behavior. Now, Mr. Greenleaf is determined to get his money back, no matter what it takes. He pounds on the door, shouting for the Viscount to come out and face him.
