Chapter 1: A New Beginning
The world faded away, leaving behind darkness and a sense of weightlessness. John's last memory was falling asleep in his apartment, tired after another long day at work. But now, he found himself in an unfamiliar realm, disconnected from everything he had ever known.
As his consciousness slowly awakened, he became aware of an ethereal presence, a chorus of whispers and distant voices echoing in his mind. Confusion overwhelmed him as he tried to grasp his surroundings. He felt a peculiar sensation, as if he were floating, weightless yet suspended in an invisible embrace.
Then, a blinding light pierced through the darkness, causing John to squint his eyes. As his vision adjusted, he found himself in a room, surrounded by figures in white garments. The room was pristine, with the scent of herbs and incense filling the air. It felt comforting yet strangely alien.
And then he saw it—the source of the light. In the center of the room, a woman lay on a bed, her face twisted in pain. John's eyes widened as he realized what was happening. He was witnessing a birth.
The woman's pained cries echoed through the room as the midwives and healers attending to her hurriedly prepared for the arrival of the baby. John watched in awe as the tiny life fought its way into the world, gasping for breath. And as the baby emerged, its cries filled the room, blending with the mother's relief.
But something was off. John's heart pounded in his chest as he realized that he wasn't just an observer in this moment. He was the baby. He looked down at his tiny, delicate hands, and shock washed over him. This wasn't his body; it couldn't be.
As the midwives cleaned the baby and wrapped it in a soft blanket, John's mind raced. How could this have happened? What had caused him to be reborn into this new existence? Was this some sort of dream or a cruel prank played by the universe?
The whispers in his mind grew louder, as if the voices were trying to communicate with him. Their words were faint and indistinct, but he sensed an air of anticipation, as though they were speaking of great possibilities and challenges that lay ahead.
John's gaze shifted to the people surrounding him—the midwives and healers who had helped bring him into this world. Their faces were a mix of astonishment and reverence, as if they knew something he didn't. The woman who had given birth, his mother, looked exhausted yet radiantly joyful.
As John's tiny eyes met his mother's, a surge of emotions flooded through him—love, warmth, and a sense of belonging. Despite his confusion and fear, he couldn't deny the deep connection he felt to these people. They were his family now, and he would have to navigate this strange new world with their support.
And what a world it was. Magic permeated every corner, its existence apparent in the glimmers of light that danced around the room. John had heard tales of magic, of fantastical creatures and unimaginable powers, but he had always dismissed them as fiction. Yet here he was, a witness to its reality.
His mind flashed back to his old life, the one he had left behind. As a journalist, John had been exposed to the horrors of the world—corruption, violence, and the darkest aspects of humanity. It had taken its toll on him, leaving him somewhat depressed and disillusioned. Yet, amidst the darkness, a spark of hope for people, for a better world, remained within him, a flame that could not be extinguished.
But this new world offered a chance for a different kind of existence. A realm where magic existed, where people harnessed its power to shape their reality. It was a realm of wonder and possibilities, a stark contrast to the harsh realities he had known.
John, though, had always been different. Extremely intelligent, he excelled in academia and absorbed knowledge like a sponge. However, his pursuit of knowledge came at a cost. Social skills eluded him, and he often found himself baffled by the superficial conversations that consumed others. How could people talk about nothing, he wondered, when there was so much depth to explore?
Questions burned within John's mind. How did he found himself into this world? Could he learn to harness mana, just like everyone around him? And most importantly, why had he been reborn in this new existence?
There was a glimmer of a possibility that lay in his past. In one of his last assignments as a journalist, he had encountered a supposed mystic lady who claimed to have answers to the unknown. Desperate to find his lost girlfriend, who had vanished without a trace over a decade ago, John had sought her assistance. He remembered the mystic's enigmatic smile as she promised to help him, but he had dismissed it as mere theatrics.
Now, in this new world, John couldn't shake the feeling that his rebirth was somehow connected to his past, to the unanswered questions that haunted him. Perhaps the mystic lady held the key to his newfound existence.
As he lay in his crib, surrounded by the warmth of his family and the whispers of a magical world, John's determination grew. He would uncover the truth, both about this world and his lost love. The spark of hope within him burned brighter than ever, and he knew that his journey had only just begun.
Little did he know the adventures, trials, and revelations that awaited him on this extraordinary path, a path where he would not only discover his place in this magical realm but also unravel the mysteries of his own existence.
Chapter 2: A World Unveiled
As the days passed, Mia, formerly known as John, marveled at her ability to comprehend the conversations around her. Although she was no more than a year old, her understanding surpassed that of a typical infant. Words flowed into her mind, regardless of the language being spoken, although she found comfort in the familiarity of English.
Mia's new family began to take shape in her consciousness. Her father, Huang, stood tall and formidable, a giant of a man with a minimum height of two meters but he is probably a lot bigger. Its hard to measure people without tools. His physical strength made him the town's strongest warrior, revered by all. With his broad frame, brownish skin, black short hair, and a small beard, Huang possessed a distinctly Mongolian appearance. His piercing brown eyes reflected a wisdom that Mia sensed ran deep.
Mia's stepmother, Lin, stood in contrast to Huang's towering presence. At a height of around 160 cm, she exuded elegance with her long black hair, fair skin, and an almost perfect female figure. Her jade-colored eyes sparkled with warmth and kindness, capturing Mia's attention whenever they met. If a nationality were to be assigned to Lin, it would be Chinese.
Two older brothers, Kai and Choi, completed the immediate family. Kai, eight years old, resembled a smaller, beardless version of their father. His admiration for Huang was evident in the way he mimicked his father's movements and sought his approval. Choi, now seven years old, embodied a blend of both Huang and Lin's features, making it difficult to give a specific nationality for him. His jade-colored eyes, reminiscent of his mother's, mirrored his mischievous spirit. His slightly tanned skin reflected the outdoor activities in which he often engaged.
In addition to her immediate family, Mia became acquainted with Liza, an old lady who is Huang's aunt. Liza, around sixty years old, possessed an air of wisdom and experience. She had followed Huang to the town as it was being constructed, at the request of her sister, Huang's mother. Liza's inability to have children had become known to Mia during a whispered conversation in the middle of the night. Her long gray hair, always tied in a ponytail, complemented her black eyes and fair skin. She embodied the image of an elderly Asian woman, standing at a height of 150 cm.
Mia's mother, Marry, stood out from the rest of the family with her Western appearance. With her blonde hair, statuesque height of 175 cm, and an unusual purple eye, she possessed a captivating beauty akin to that of a supermodel. Mia learned that Marry had once been a magic swordswoman in a faraway land before finding her way to the town they now called home. Conversations hinted at Marry being the oldest member of the household, and her past adventures intrigued Mia.
Through her mother's movements and the whispers of the villagers, Mia pieced together fragments of information about this new world. Technology, as she had known it in her previous life, was largely absent, replaced by the ubiquitous presence of magic. In this realm, even the lowest members of society found their basic needs met, with magic ensuring sanitation and an abundance of food. However, the people's focus on survival and the constant threat of monsters left little room for entertainment or the development of advanced technology.
Mia discovered that their town was relatively new, founded a decade ago by an old man seeking refuge from the roaming monsters. In a fortuitous twist of fate, he encountered an army teleported from a distant battlefield by a powerful mage. The convergence of these events led to the town's inception. Despite its relative youth, the town was not isolated, with other settlements a day or two away by horse.
The houses in Mia's town blended elements of Eastern and Western design, influenced by the soldiers and migrants who had arrived from neighboring regions. The resulting architectural medley mirrored the diverse backgrounds of the town's inhabitants.
Mia also learned that their town belonged to a minor kingdom located along the coast of the continent. The townspeople paid minimal taxes, but the intricacies of the monetary system still eluded Mia. As she grew older, she knew she would unravel these mysteries and navigate her way through this new world.
Chapter 3: A Father's Dilemma
Mia's house buzzed with excitement as her second birthday party was in full swing. The table was adorned with a modest spread of sweets, mostly cookies and simple candies made from fruits, accompanied by refreshing honey juice. Mia, dressed in a beautiful pink dress gifted by her grandmother, basked in the attention of her family, particularly the women who fawned over her.
Amidst the joyful chatter, Huang, Mia's father, found himself lost in deep thought. He was fully present at the party, yet his mind wandered into the realm of possibilities and concerns. He watched Mia interact with her brothers, who teased her playfully, their words tinged with a hint of envy. They couldn't help but wonder why Mia received birthday parties while they had never experienced one. Every time they questioned the adults, the response was always the same: Mia was special, and her celebrations were a way to honor that uniqueness.
In the midst of the festivities, Mia couldn't help but contemplate the concept of a "party." She found it amusing that such a small gathering, with its simple treats, could be considered a grand celebration. Yet, she recognized that the sweets laid out before them held a special significance. Sweets were not something people often went out of their way to make or buy unless they were children. In their own way, those treats held a touch of magic.
As the night began to settle, Mia's father called her to a room she had never been to before in the house. Her eyes widened at the sight of various weapons adorning the walls, accompanied by the eerie display of mounted skulls. Among them were books, a rare sight in her young life.
"What is this place, Father?" Mia asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
Huang turned to face his daughter, a mix of emotions playing across his face. "This, my dear Mia, is a room that holds the treasures of our family. These weapons and skulls represent the achievements and challenges overcome by our ancestors."
Mia's eyes sparkled with awe as she took in the significance of the room. She couldn't help but feel a sense of pride welling up within her. "Are these weapons really that special, Father?"
Huang nodded solemnly. "Indeed, they are. These weapons are natural treasures, acquired through dangerous quests and battles with monsters. They symbolize the strength and skill that our family possesses."
Mia's gaze shifted to the books on the shelf, her curiosity piqued once again. "And what are these books, Father?"
Her father smiled, a mixture of fondness and pride in his eyes. "These are cultivation manuals and journals. They contain the knowledge and techniques that have been passed down through our family for generations. They hold the key to our family's cultivation method, a way for us to become stronger."
Huang explained how their cultivation method had been developed through trial and error, constantly refined and improved to minimize risks. He emphasized the rarity of such a successful technique outside of established sects, making their family's achievement all the more significant.
Once the exposition was complete, Huang turned his attention to Mia, his expression filled with a mix of concern and love. "Now, my dear Mia, I want to ask you a question. What do you want to do in the future?"
Mia's mind whirled with images of heroes and heroines, wielding mighty swords, casting spells, and embarking on daring adventures. After a moment of contemplation, she replied with unwavering determination, "I want to fly, Father. I want to wield a big sword and have the power to conjure fire from my hands. Maybe, if luck permits, I would even ride a dragon."
Huang was taken aback by his daughter's response. The weight of her words sank deep into his heart, mingling with a surge of conflicting emotions as what she was saying sounded both adorable and deep at the same time, not that she noticed that what she wanted to speak and what she was saying were two different things. He gently hugged Mia, guiding her towards her bed, and whispered, "I love you, my precious Mia."
As Mia settled into her bed, her mind buzzed with questions. What had her father meant by asking about her future aspirations? And why had his reaction been tinged with a mix of shock and concern?
Meanwhile, in Huang's bedroom, the atmosphere was calm and intimate. The two women in his life, Lin and Marry, were with him, their gazes filled with understanding.
Huang turned to them, his voice filled with worry. "What should I do? Mia has so much potential, more than I ever imagined. But the thought of her facing danger and battles, it terrifies me."
Lin placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "She is still so young, Huang. It's too early to make any decisions or dwell on what the future holds for her. The boys only started to train when they were 5 years old. Let her grow and explore her own path."
Marry nodded in agreement. "We can't control everything, my love. If Mia chooses the path of a warrior, we will support her every step of the way. All we can do is be there for her, guide her, and pray for her safety."
The two women shared a knowing glance, a subtle hint of mischief dancing in their eyes. Marry couldn't resist teasing her husband gently. "And who knows, Huang? Perhaps if Mia had a little sister, she would be too busy being a big sister and forget all about becoming a warrior."
Huang chuckled softly, appreciating the lightheartedness in Marry's words. With a newfound sense of reassurance, he knew that whatever path Mia chose, their love and support would always be by her side.
As the night settled in, the lights were put out, a sign they were going to be more intimate with each other. Huang, grateful for the charm he had acquired, which allowed them privacy, allowed the love and comfort of his wives to envelop him, momentarily easing the weight of his concerns.
Unbeknownst to Mia, her father grappled with his own fears and desires, torn between safeguarding his precious daughter and nurturing her boundless potential.
Chapter 4: Huang's Little Devil
Huang and Roy, still clad in their samurai-meets-knight armor, found respite in their favorite bar after a long patrol around the village. The weariness etched on their faces spoke volumes of the challenges they had faced, yet their spirits remained unwavering. The mugs of their chosen beverages provided a comforting warmth as they leaned against the counter, engaging in conversation.
Roy let out a sigh and confessed, "You know, Huang, sometimes I question whether the money we earn from killing monsters and turning in their corpses to the guilds is worth it. I mean, being known as the weakest guard in town, it stings a bit, you know? Even though it's far from the truth."
Huang raised an eyebrow, acknowledging his friend's frustration. "I understand what you mean Roy. But let's not forget, the monsters freeze in my presence. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Even a child could handle your job if they had the strength to split a metal boulder with their bare hands. Sure, it's easier to hit something that doesn't move, but that doesn't diminish the importance of the work we do. These monsters, especially the ones we go after, are as tough as they come around these parts."
Sipping his beer absentmindedly, Huang listened to his friend's words while his mind wandered. The mention of children caught his attention, and a heaviness settled in his heart. Roy noticed his distraction and inquired about Huang's daughter, whom everyone referred to as "Huang's little devil."
Downing another cup of beer, Huang embarked on an explanation that revealed the extraordinary nature of his daughter, Mia. He marveled at how she had developed her magical abilities shortly after her third birthday, able to summon and control water, manipulate winds, and even shape rocks with her mana. But her attempts to share her magical prowess with other children, while well intentioned, often resulted in chaotic displays of dirt, rocks, and water being flung about. The town's children had a field day, engaging in playful battles fueled by Mia's magical teachings. Thankfully, no one with the power of fire got involved.
After a few weeks of relative calm, an incident involving dolls disrupted the tranquility. In an effort to encourage Mia's social interactions, Huang and his wives gifted her a collection of dolls. Mia quickly made friends, but soon the dolls took on a life of their own, wandering through the town. An exorcist was nearly summoned, but before he could arrive, a group of panicked children pleaded for help at the guard station. Huang rushed to the scene to find his daughter controlling an army of dolls, pummeling an older boy who had insulted and destroyed Mia's cherished doll—the one that resembled her mother. Despite his internal struggle, Huang intervened, putting a stop to the chaos. He soon after discovered the magnetic allure of Mia's imagination and the mesmerizing allure of moving dolls to the town's children as he watched them from afar to make sure everything would be ok.
The subsequent chapters of Mia's young life unfolded with remarkable speed. She learned to read and write in a day after a chance encounter with a passing caravan. Mia's fiery defense of Liza, their family friend and his aunt, against a pickpocket earned her a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. But the most memorable incident occurred just before her fourth birthday when Huang entrusted Mia to the care of his fellow guards at the station. Mia quickly grasped the card game they were playing and began winning against seasoned players, amassing a small fortune. The tearful guards implored Huang to rein in his daughter, and though he managed to convince her to return the money, the guards were obliged to bring their families and contribute to Mia's birthday celebration. Which later was adopted as a custom in town. Every week you can hear about a kid throwing a birthday party and inviting other families to it.
The incidents continued, each revealing Mia's remarkable skills and unyielding spirit. She bet and won small sums of money, no longer bankrupting individuals but still finding joy in a few extra coins. And then there was the day she returned home with a colossal wolf-like creature, tamed by her and her brothers. While Huang initially feared for his daughter's safety, he discovered that the creature, in Mia's eyes, was nothing less than a loyal and protective dog. The town was reluctant to accept this unconventional pet, but the persuasiveness of both Mia and Huang's wives eventually quelled their fears.
As Huang concluded his recollections, Roy, ever supportive, handed him another beer and broached the topic of Mia's training. "So, when you plan to train your little girl? If I remember you began your boys training on the day of their birthdays." Mia was almost 5 years old, the age her brothers started to train so the people close to Huang were aware of what that could mean. Huang was not sure what to say. "My friend, I am ashamed to admit I am afraid of what can come from me training my daughter. She shows so much potential but I don't think people are ready for a Mia that is physically stronger and magic-trained. I know that I am sure as hell not ready."
Chapter 5 – A Fateful Incident.
A few weeks had passed since Mia's fifth birthday, and as always, a celebration had taken place. While more and more people in the town were hosting birthday parties, Mia still felt the specialness of her own day. It was a time when everyone gathered to honor her existence.
But lately, Mia had noticed a change in how people referred to her. They called her "Huang's little devil," a name she couldn't quite comprehend. She pondered if she had ever done something so terrible to deserve such a title, but no specific incidents came to mind. In her recollection, the incidents that got her a little fame(the ones her father had shared with Roy in the last chapter) were seen from her perspective, and she firmly believed she was always in the right. Whether it was confronting a bully or stopping a robbery, she saw herself as the defender of justice.
Mia also couldn't help but think that those who tried to bet money with her in the card game her father had shown her were mere pawns in a prank orchestrated by her father. She believed he had convinced them to challenge her, thinking it was a harmless joke or maybe to just give her coins in a way that she would feel like she did something. And as for the incident at the guard house, she believed it was part of her father's plan to invite more people to her birthday, ensuring she wouldn't feel alone. In her mind, if her father had wanted to invite more people, he could have simply asked her.
Amidst her thoughts about the past, Mia's attention turned to her faithful companion, Onyx. She found it strange that everyone was initially afraid of him. To her, he was just a big, fluffy, and shiny dog. Strong too, as she could ride him like a horse, and he loved it. He was also incredibly intelligent, understanding her commands with ease. All it took was a few bones and a little playtime with her and her brothers for Onyx to become loyal and obedient.
Unbeknownst to Mia, her actions were often clouded by her child's mind, preventing her from seeing any wrongdoing in what she did. The adult soul within her failed to recognize the potential consequences of her actions.
Lost in her reflections, Mia decided to venture out into the town on the back of Onyx, as she often did when she couldn't find someone to play with. After wandering for several minutes and greeting the townspeople, she spotted her father and two brothers entering a building. Curiosity piqued, she decided to follow them.
Inside the building, she noticed a crowd of people but no guards by the main door. With that in mind, she confidently entered the place with Onyx by her side. The interior resembled a theater, but without the seats for the audience. It seemed like some kind of presentation was about to take place, though Mia couldn't discern the nature of it.
As she discreetly scouted the area, her eyes caught sight of her father and brothers. Drawing nearer, she eagerly asked a question. "Father, what is going on?" Her father, taken aback by her sudden appearance, struggled to answer immediately. After a moment of silence he pointed to the stage and talked ."Be silent and pay attention. It's better for you to see it for yourself."
Less than a minute later, an old man dressed in what Mia recognized as traditional kung fu attire appeared on the stage. His entire outfit was purple, and he had brown hair. From her distance, Mia couldn't make out any more details about the man.
As the old man began to speak, he utilized magic to draw in the air, explaining various points. Mia became completely absorbed in his words. The man introduced himself as Dimitri, someone tasked by the Kingdom, magical schools, martial schools, and sects to travel across the continent and teach people about the intricacies of a life dedicated to fighting. He was also scouting for potential students to recommend to the sponsoring institutions.
Dimitri's teachings encompassed essential skills such as camping, finding food, basic survival—knowledge that anyone considering themselves a monster hunter, adventurer, hero, wanderer or anything similar should possess. Among the topics covered was the importance of being able to explain one's fighting style to others.
According to Dimitri, people were divided into categories based on their mana usage and fighting style. These categories were known as "holes." They paralleled the classes seen in RPGs, such as Monks, Warriors, Knights, Rogues, Mages, and more. While some used elaborate descriptions for their holes, the most basic explanation was often sufficient. Extreme specialization was rare among fighters, as it left them vulnerable to adversaries who exploited their weaknesses. For instance, a mage who could only wield a single element had to be exceptionally skilled in that element, or they would be rendered ineffective against certain foes.
In terms of mana usage, there were three classifications: Emitters, Controllers, and Cultivators. Emitters utilized their mana and the mana in their surroundings to launch attacks—like a mage casting a fireball or a warrior slashing through the air, with the slash traveling and cutting something.
Controllers, on the other hand, used their mana to envelop something, empowering it with magical properties. This category included enchanters who temporarily imbued weapons with elemental attributes or knights who projected energy shields.
Cultivators were individuals who fortified something, be it their own bodies or weapons, by channeling mana from their surroundings. Mia's father served as an example of a body cultivator. He drew mana from the environment to enhance his physical strength, a technique he could also apply to the weapons he crafted.
While most people fell into a single category, there was no restriction on using mana in other areas. However, individuals usually focused on one aspect to expedite their growth. Mia found solace in this information, as she realized that despite being an Emitter, she could still pursue cultivation like her father and brothers.
After further explanations about finding water, identifying poisonous substances, and the vulnerabilities of opponents (with a humorous emphasis on aiming for their heads or genitalia), Dimitri asked for a volunteer to demonstrate a vital piece of equipment that every wanderer should possess for protection.
Eager to participate, Mia raised her hand along with a few others. Standing out like a clown among warriors, Dimitri chose her as his volunteer. Together, they ascended the stage, exchanging greetings. "Hello, I am Mia and this is Onyx. He is a very good dog. He is smart, strong and shiny." Dimitri was briefly perplexed by the fact that a young girl had a magnificent wolf as a pet, but he chose to disregard it, as it ranked low on his list of peculiarities. "Hello dear Mia. Thanks for helping me."
Dimitri proceeded to introduce the companion badge, a magical device widely produced throughout the world. These badges could nullify damage from anyone whose badge was calibrated to the same frequency as yours. By imbuing mana into the badge, individuals could establish a connection, rendering each other unable to harm one another unless an immense amount of mana was employed in an attack. Healing magic or other beneficial types of use of mana, however, remained effective.
After calibrating two badges with Mia, Dimitri began to talk with Mia again."Dear lady, to show how this badge works I would ask that you hit me with the strongest attack you can use." Hearing that Mia gave a concerned look and responded."My dad told me to not use all my mana on anything or I could hurt me or someone else." Taken a little by surprise by what the little girl was saying he started to reassure the girl."Do not worry little lady. I am very strong, I also have a stock of health and mana potions for the both of us as well various other items like pills and herbs." Little did he know that he would soon deplete his supply, courtesy of Mia.
Driven by her adult soul's theoretical knowledge, Mia intended to conjure a controlled explosion by compressing air and igniting it with fire. However, her child's mind struggled to comprehend the concept of restraint. As Dimitri anticipated a modest air-based attack, Mia's concentration unleashed a spark of fire within the compressed air. In an instant, a devastating explosion erupted, bypassing the protection of the companion badge and engulfing Dimitri, sending him hurtling towards a wall. The blast burned him severely, leaving him in agonizing pain.
Stunned by the aftermath, Mia sprinted toward Dimitri in a panic, desperate to check his condition. Her hands, however, had suffered burns upon contact with his scorching skin. Filled with remorse, Mia believed she had taken an innocent life. Overwhelmed with guilt, she cried out for her father, confessing her fear of going to jail and pleading that it was all an accident. In her young mind, she had committed an irreparable act of violence. She berated herself for not holding back, thinking that wind or water manipulation would have been safer choices.
Minutes passed in anguished silence as Mia's tears flowed uncontrollably. Her father, along with the concerned onlookers, attempted to calm her, but to no avail. Then, to everyone's surprise, Dimitri slowly rose to his feet. "I am sorry little lady, it seems I made a terrible mistake and made you cry." He said in a hoarse voice. His unexpected revival intensified her emotions, and she cried even harder, this time out of relief that he was alive but still gravely wounded.
Dimitri resorted to various potions, liquids, and sustenance to facilitate his own healing. Eventually, his skin began to regenerate, but not before he covertly administered a healing potion to Mia's burned hand, an injury she had not yet noticed. In an effort to diffuse the situation, he explained to those present that even the most reliable tools could fail, emphasizing the importance of always having alternative measures in place. Mia's panic gradually subsided, exhaustion overtaking her as the emotional roller-coaster took its toll on her young body and mind. She drifted into a deep sleep, shielded by her family's watchful eyes.
Less than an hour later, Huang found himself in the living room with his two wives and Dimitri. Mia was tucked safely in bed, her family keeping a vigilant presence. The boys, especially concerned by Mia's uncharacteristic display of devastation, were in shock from witnessing her distress. Onyx stood guard, ensuring no one disturbed the household, while Liza prepared a meal that Mia could enjoy later, considering she would likely miss dinner.
Marry attempted to apologize on behalf of her daughter. " I am sorry mister Dimitri. My daughter hurt you and made you use expensive medicine on yourself and her. Even if it takes a while we are willing to..." Before she could finish Dimitri cut her off. "No need. This was entirely my fault. My failure in heeding the warnings of the little lady and checking what she could do quite literally exploded in my face."
Taken aback by what the older man said, there was a minute of silence before Mia's family started to talk about the future. "I am not sure what should I do with my daughter. We never once thought her anything relate to magic besides that mana exist and can do almost anything and look what she can do. I am afraid that the only thing I can do is give her a sturdier body that she can find better ways to hurt." Huang said in a worrying tone.
Lin didn't have much experience fighting anything bigger than a rat so she couldn't add much."Well, there is bound to be someone who can help us in the areas we lack in this town or the neighboring ones. If turns out she can't be trained we can at least know that she is naturally powerful and so she will probably find himself a good man in future." She said in a reassuring tone.
Marry was worried about the immediate future of her daughter."I hope she is not too damaged by what happened. I don't want my daughter to be depressed and lose that smile she gives to everyone and everything." Her worry was palpable. Mia might be a genius by any metric but she still is a child. She grasped that what she thought she had done was bad and the consequences of such a thing are not something a child should ever have to think about.
After a few more minutes of silence where all of them drank some tea and pondered about what to do, Dimitri spoke up."I believe that the little lady should be trained exclusively in cultivation until at least she is a fully grown adult." The other people there were a little lost on what he was trying to imply so he continued. "That girl is a natural high-level Emitter and controller. She created and controlled that explosion in a way that wouldn't harm her in any way. It's not something I like to say but if her skills as a Controller or Emitter were any lower than they were I can guarantee that you wouldn't have a daughter anymore." Those words hurt like more than anything any of the adults there wanted to acknowledge. Huang especially almost went in a depressive spiral of thoughts of what he would have done should the worse had happened.
After he said sunk to the people there, Dimitri continued. "Under normal circumstances I would try to convince you to leave your daughter to me so I could find somewhere for her to train and reach her full potential but I fear what will happen to her if I separate her from her family at such young age, especially after the trauma she suffered. Worse yet is that even the best places I know would soon treat her like a weapon than a child who needs guidance once they find about how powerful she is." He really didn't want to continue to say things that were hurting those people but as a warrior and a gentleman he had the duty to explain the situation they found themselves into because of his blunder."I will stay in town for a few days so you can help the little lady recover and then we can talk about your daughter's future. If you excuse me, I shall take my leave."
As he was leaving, Dimitri thought to himself that he wouldn't forgive himself if that girl closed herself off because of his stupidity. Many would say that the girl was at fault and that many people would find themselves on the other end of his blade if they said it to the girl. He didn't want to make the girl into a warrior. If it turned out she wants to be a housewife he wouldn't mind a bit but if she chooses another path in life just because she is traumatized by what happened today Dimitri can't begin to imagine what he would do to himself.
As the door closed behind Dimitri, Huang reached out for his wives hands, squeezing it gently. They shared a moment of silent understanding, knowing that their lives were about to change irrevocably. Their innocent daughter, oblivious to the challenges that awaited her, slumbered peacefully in the room nearby. And in that moment, Huang, Lin and Marry made a solemn promise to protect her, nurture her, and guide her through the treacherous path she was destined to tread.
Little did they know that their daughter's journey had only just begun and that the world outside their small town held mysteries, dangers, and adventures beyond their wildest imagination.
Chapter 6: A New Path Unveiled
Mia woke up in the middle of the night, her eyes adjusting to the dimly lit room. To her surprise, she found her entire family gathered around her bed, their faces filled with concern. They were all half-awake with a mix of expressions of worry and relief.
Startled, Mia tried to quietly slip past them, hoping to avoid any further attention. However, her family's senses were keen, and they became wide awake at her slightest movement. For a brief moment, their gazes fell upon Mia, and in that moment, she felt as if they were judging her, ready to scold her harshly for the incident with Dimitri.
Tears began to form in Mia's eyes as the weight of guilt and fear overwhelmed her. But before her emotions could consume her completely, her family rushed toward her, enveloping her in their arms. "I'm sorry, Papa. I didn't mean for things to go wrong."
As carefully as he could, Huang began to talk with his daughter. "I love you my little girl. I'm just glad you are safe."
Marry joined the conversation, her voice gentle and soothing. "It's not your fault, sweetheart. Dimitri assured us that he should have taken more responsibility as the adult. We're just glad you're safe."
Lin chimed in, her tone warm and caring. "You're part of our family, Mia. We love you, no matter what. We'll always be here for you."
Kai stepped forward, his voice filled with determination. "Yeah, sis, we've got your back."
Choi nodded in agreement. "That's right, Mia. We're here to protect you, no matter what."
Liza approached with a bowl of hot soup in her hands, a gentle smile on her face. "Here, Mia. This will warm you up. You're safe now."
Mia accepted the bowl gratefully and took a sip, feeling the warmth spread through her body. She leaned back onto her pillow, surrounded by the loving presence of her family. Their words of love and reassurance washed away the guilt and fear that had plagued her.
In the following days, Mia stayed within the confines of her home, contemplating the events that had unfolded. She felt conflicted, torn between her love for magic and the fear of the potential harm it could cause. Mia grappled with the realization that she was overlooking or outright unable to perceive certain things, sensing that something was wrong. She pondered her own appearance, realizing that she had never truly paid attention to her own face. Though she knew her hair was blonde like her mother's and her eyes a radiant shade of purple, she couldn't truly grasp the entirety of her own identity. It was a nagging feeling, a puzzle piece missing from her understanding.
Despite her inner turmoil, Mia found solace in her family's continued words of encouragement. They reminded her not to abandon her dreams and aspirations, but to approach them with caution and mindfulness. With their unwavering support, Mia resolved to continue her journey, but with a newfound sense of responsibility.
One day, Dimitri returned as promised, ready to discuss Mia's path forward. Mia, her voice filled with sincerity, addressed him, "Dimitri, I'm really sorry for what happened. I didn't mean to hurt you."
Dimitri placed a hand on her shoulder, and with a kind and understanding tone he said. "Mia, it was my fault. I should have taken your powers more seriously and guided you better. I apologize for underestimating you."
Mia nodded, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Dimitri. But what now? What should I do?"
Dimitri reached into his bag and pulled out two cultivation manuals, handing them to Mia. "These manuals will guide you, Mia. One for mind cultivation and one for soul cultivation. They'll help you understand and develop your abilities."
Mia's eyes widened in curiosity. "What about body cultivation?"
Dimitri smiled, his eyes filled with reassurance. "Your father and brothers have already trained in that aspect, and their techniques are more than enough. Just focus on mind and soul cultivation for now. They will lay a strong foundation for you."
Mia began to ask more questions, but Dimitri interrupted her gently. "All the answers you seek are in these manuals, Mia. Study them carefully, but remember, cultivating can be dangerous if done without guidance. Don't practice alone, and never teach what you learn without permission from your parents."
Mia nodded, holding the manuals close to her chest. She watched as Dimitri bid her family farewell and left. A thought crossed her mind, and she wondered if she would ever see him again.
Soon after, Mia's father, Huang, approached her, holding a cultivation manual of their family's lineage. He spoke with pride and confidence, "Mia, my smart girl, I trust you to read this manual on your own. You have the intellect to comprehend its teachings. However, remember that practicing alone can be risky. Seek guidance and supervision."
Mia nodded, her eyes filled with determination. She understood the responsibility entrusted to her.
As Mia returned to her room, eager to dive into the manuals, the rest of her family went their ways, each contemplating their roles and concerns.
Lin and Marry engaged in a conversation about finding a suitable husband for Mia. They acknowledged her future strength and pondered how to ensure her happiness and compatibility. Rarely women want to be with a man weaker than them so they would probably need to look beyond this town to find someone for their daughter. The prospect that Mia might become interested in other women also comes up in their talk but if this happens to be true, the strength of any women interested in becoming life partners with Mia is irrelevant.
In her room, Liza held a treasured letter in her hand. She contemplated its significance, knowing that it was a lifeline to a powerful warrior friend. She hoped that it would never have to be used, but the darkness that lurked in the world made her question the safety of Mia and the protection their current allies could provide.
Huang, Kai, and Choi trained together in the courtyard, their determination burning brightly. Huang imparted his wisdom to his sons, preparing Kai to be his successor as the boy is growing to be a copy of him and teaching Choi how to better make use of his gifts of movement and vision without ignoring his body strength.
In a distant land, two shadowy figures conversed inside a dilapidated shack amidst the depths of a forest. The first figure inquired about their plans and progress, but the second figure revealed that their target had vanished, leaving them clueless. After a tense moment of silence, the first figure dropped a bag of gold coins, offering a stark warning and demanding that the target be found at any cost.
Meanwhile, Mia's anticipation grew, eager to embark on her cultivation journey. Her family's love and encouragement bolstered her resolve as she prepared to unlock the knowledge and potential within her.
Chapter 6.5: Musings of an Experienced Mia
Dear Diary,
As I delve deeper into the cultivation manuals gifted to me, I find myself lost in nostalgic memories of when I first discovered these profound truths. The knowledge I gained provided insights into the intricacies of mana manipulation and the classification of strength among mana users. Let me share with you the wisdom I've acquired.
Within every living being, there exists a physical body, a mental body, and a mana body. The physical body is self-explanatory, serving as the tangible vessel that we inhabit. The mana body, on the other hand, is an ethereal replica of our physical form, coexisting in the same space. As we grow older, our mana body expands if necessary and becomes denser as its mana capacity increases.
The mental body, akin to the physical and mana bodies, is an exact replica of our physical form. Its primary function is to act as a conduit between the mana body and the physical body. Through training, the mental body becomes capable of generating and storing energy—an amalgamation of the physical world's energies and the mystical energies of mana.
Now, let's explore how strength is classified among mana users. Emitters, in particular, are classified based on two factors: the amount of mana they can utilize from within themselves and their ability to control mana from outside sources. Experts have the remarkable ability to calculate the amount and origin of mana being utilized, as well as the internal mana limit of an individual.
Emitters are awarded Star ranks for every 10% increment of their total mana that they can release and control from external sources. Initially, these ranks are referred to as Basic Star ranks. However, when an emitter achieves rank 10 in either category, they are bestowed with the title of a Full Star Rank, commonly known as a Star. Beyond this point, only Full Stars are granted to emitters. For instance, if an emitter can control 200% of the mana around them relative to their total mana, they would possess at least 2 full stars. It is worth noting that some exceptional individuals can learn to attain Full Stars by outputting more mana than they naturally possess.
Controllers, on the other hand, have a unique classification system known as Knots. While anyone sufficiently trained can perform actions similar to those of a controller, only a true controller can form a Knot within themselves. A Knot is a complex manipulation of the mana body, resembling a knot but made with mana. By creating a knot, a controller moves a portion of their mana body outside of their physical form, allowing them to control the shape and size of the knot. However, failure to create a knot may result in the loss of the mana involved in the attempt.
It is important to note that knots pose challenges for most cultivation methods, as they exist externally to the practitioner's body, mind, and soul. The number of knots formed determines the controller's rank, representing their mastery of this technique. Initially, some criticized the rank system for being solely based on the number of knots, but recent discoveries indicate that when the mana body recovers, the knot retains a percentage of the total mana relative to the mana body's size. For example, if a knot represents 10% of the mana body's size, it will always contain a maximum amount of mana equal to 10% of the total mana in the mana body, as long as their sizes remain unchanged.
Moving on to cultivators, their path is an entirely different endeavor. Cultivation encompasses three distinct types: Body Cultivation, Mind Cultivation, and Soul Cultivation. Body cultivation employs mana to strengthen the physical body, enhancing its toughness, strength, flexibility, and other desired attributes. Mind cultivation focuses on training the mind body, enhancing mental faculties such as memory retention and information processing. Soul cultivation is the art of refining the mana body, making it more efficient in utilizing mana and increasing its overall capacity. Additionally, as one progresses in soul cultivation, their soul gradually merges with the mana body, offering benefits such as increased resilience and regenerative capabilities. Furthermore, some practitioners even employ fragments of their soul to cast spells or create magical items, as it serves as a natural healing mechanism for the soul.
It is important to highlight that cultivation is not a passive endeavor. Cultivators must actively utilize their cultivation techniques to harness their true strength. Those who specialize in a single type of cultivation are classified based on ranks 1 to 10, which indicate the degree to which they can surpass their natural limits. For example, a body cultivator who can lift 200 kg with the aid of cultivation, compared to their natural capacity of 100kg, would be deemed a Rank 1 Body Cultivator. This ranking system applies to each cultivation type individually, reflecting the practitioner's mastery in that specific area. However, practitioners who excel in all three cultivation types simultaneously are known as True Cultivators.
Before I continue it is important to explain what exactly is cultivation. Cultivation is the act of circulating mana inside one's bodies in a certain way and fortifying them. If done right, the cultivation technique will create an ethereal circulatory system that once pumped with mana will strengthen the body in question as well as protect it from any harm that the amount of power it is currently using could cause.
True Cultivators must achieve equal proficiency in body, mind, and soul cultivation before advancing to the next stage. Once accomplished, they are no longer restricted to the limitations of the Ki Gathering Stage, the initial stage of cultivation described in the ancient texts, where practitioners consolidate their mana and refine their bodies. Instead, True Cultivators can surpass the limitations of Rank 10 and continue their cultivation journey.
Upon surpassing the Ki Gathering Stage, cultivators enter the Ki Condensation Stage. In this stage, the three bodies—physical, mind, and mana—begin to merge, their energies harmonizing into a cohesive whole. Any energy produced or utilized by the bodies that does not leave the body is transformed in liquid mana, which is just a denser form of mana resembling water if touched in its pure form outside of the body. Ranks in the Ki Condensation Stage are granted when practitioners can exert 1000% or more power compared to their normal capabilities. Upon mastering this stage the practitioner can advance to the Core Creation Stage.
Entering the Core Creation Stage marks a significant milestone for cultivators. At this stage, the practitioner's physical body becomes the sole remaining entity, while the mind and mana bodies condense into a core within the practitioner's body. This core, nestled at the center of his body, houses the practitioner's soul and serves as a generator of mana. Ranks in this stage are granted based on the practitioner's ability to exert a certain percentage of their core's generated mana. Each rank signifies a 10000% increase in power compared to their natural abilities. Knots can still be created at this stage, although doing so comes at the cost of depleting a portion of the soul.
The subsequent stage is the Fusion Core Stage, where the core fuses with the soul and transcends its physical nature. Ranks in this stage are determined by the practitioner's ability to actively utilize a percentage of the mana generated by the core before it dissipates and blends with natural mana. Upon being able to wield 10% of the core's generated mana at any given moment, practitioners achieve a new rank. While knot creation remains possible and the recovery of the soul increases the maximum available mana one has once the soul fully heals, at this point it becomes irrelevant to any decent cultivator.
As the practitioner enters the Immortal Body Stage, the physical body fuses with the core, and the soul achieves complete harmony with it. At this stage, practitioners gain the ability to manifest their physical body or transcend into an ethereal state, where their soul roams freely. In this state, they attain near-immortality, as even a trace of their soul can regenerate their physical form and any piece of the soul will have the entirety of the practitioner's being. To progress in this stage and earn ranks, practitioners must comprehend, manipulate, control, and even create aspects of existence itself. These ranks are granted by the universe itself, signifying the practitioner's mastery over various facets of reality. Multiple aspects can be focused on simultaneously, and ranks are awarded independently for each mastered aspect. Once a practitioner reaches rank 10 in any aspect, they can proceed to the next stage. Additionally, practitioners in this stage lose the ability to create knots, and any existing knots vanish upon entering the Immortal Body Stage.
Beyond the Immortal Body Stage lies the Immortal Stage, where practitioners become interconnected with the universe. Even if their existence is erased, their soul will reemerge wherever mana exists. The Transcendent Stage follows, allowing practitioners to create pocket universes within themselves. Finally, the Saint Stage grants practitioners the power to generate complete parallel universes alongside their original one. These stages remain shrouded in mystery, and little information is available on how to progress or attain ranks within them.
It is vital to remember that cultivation progression often requires traversing tribulations. As practitioners advance from the Ki Condensation Stage and move toward subsequent stages, they experience a period of profound trial. During this time, they fall into a coma that lasts several minutes in the outside world while enduring visions of their worst fears and unimaginable pain. This tribulation tests their determination and resolves any remaining karma. The duration of this trial can vary from days to years within the practitioner's mind, but if they persist and withstand the tribulation, they advance to the next stage. The exact criteria for tribulation severity remains speculative, although many believe it is influenced by the practitioner's accumulated karma.
Lastly, let's not forget the formidable potential of Emitters and Controllers. Both paths offer direct routes to power, unhindered by the complexities of cultivation stages. Emitters gauge their strength based on the percentage of mana they can utilize from within and their ability to control external mana sources. Controllers, on the other hand, manipulate mana directly and achieve strength through their control over vast quantities of mana. With their distinct paths, Emitters and Controllers can match cultivators in terms of power, even in later stages.
As I reflect on the profound wisdom contained within these cultivation manuals, I am humbled by the vastness of the universe and the intricate mechanisms that govern the pursuit of power. Each cultivation path presents unique challenges and rewards, and the journey toward mastery requires unwavering dedication and resilience. I shall continue my exploration and seek further enlightenment to push the boundaries of my own cultivation.
Until we meet again, Mia
Chapter 7: Cultivation Breakthrough
Mia wandered through the town, her frustration over her stagnant cultivation weighing heavily on her mind. Onyx, her loyal companion, trailed faithfully behind her, growing larger with each passing day. She couldn't help but imagine the immense size he would eventually reach in the future.
As Mia walked, her mind began to open up, allowing her to perceive more of the world around her. She noticed the absence of paper money, realizing that coins were the predominant form of currency. These coins were minted by specialized blacksmiths and held a consistent value across different regions. They were made out of the usual metals, copper, silver, gold and if you are really rich, platinum with 100 coins of a coin having the value of the next one. The reason why that is, nobody really knows, but it is accepted by everyone so there is nothing she can do.
Another realization struck Mia—the lack of true friends in her life. While she occasionally plays with the other children in town, she couldn't identify anyone she could truly call a friend. Perhaps her family's wealth and the imposing size of their house had created a barrier between her and others.
Remembering her house it baffles her how she never noticed how big her house is. It has two floors. On the first floor there is a massive bathroom that looks like a mini hot spring, the kitchen looks like something you would expect to find in a restaurant, the dinning room could easily fit 10 to 20 pit seated and the living room was as big as her apartment in her old life. On the second floor everyone had their own rooms with a spare room that was used as a trophy room by her father. There was also a special smithy attached to the house that didn't generate smoke that her dad works on. But that's not all, she has a courtyard with a few tress that is has the same area as her house were she and her family trains.
Lost in her thoughts, Mia noticed a group of people working for a moving company near the town's border. Curiosity led her to observe their precise and skillful construction techniques. Perching herself in a secluded spot, she conjured water to quench her and Onyx's thirst, all the while fascinated by the people's craftsmanship.
Amidst her observations, an old woman approached Mia. Unlike the predominantly Asian residents of the town, this woman, Gina, had a Western appearance, White short hair, brown eyes, she wasn't that tall, around 155 cm. Gina introduced herself and inquired about Mia's activities.
"Excuse me, young one," Gina said with a kind smile. "What brings you here, observing the construction?"
Mia turned to face the woman, feeling a sense of familiarity and trust. "I was curious about how they build houses with such precision. It's amazing to watch."
Gina chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with wisdom. "Indeed, their craftsmanship is admirable. But something seems to be bothering you, dear. What troubles your mind?"
Mia hesitated for a moment before deciding to share her frustrations. "I've been practicing cultivation for over a year now, but I seem to be stuck at Rank 2. I feel like I'm missing something, like there's a puzzle piece I can't quite remember."
Gina's gaze grew thoughtful as she listened. After a moment, she let out a gentle laugh. "Ah, I see what the problem is. It's as if you're trying to look in every direction at once, isn't it? But let me tell you, my dear, sometimes walking in a circle can reveal more than stretching yourself thin."
Confusion furrowed Mia's brow. "Walking in a circle? I don't understand. Can you explain?"
With a patient smile, Gina replied, "Think of it this way, Mia. Instead of dispersing your focus in every direction when you don't need to and not seeing what you need, you can just slowly walk around and actually see everything you were trying before since the world usually don't move away from you. The more you try to do at once, the harder it becomes."
Mia's eyes widened with realization. "I never thought of it that way. It makes sense. I'll give it a try. Thank you, Gina."
Gina nodded, her white hair shimmering in the sunlight. "You're most welcome, dear. Remember, progress often lies in finding balance. Now, I must bid you farewell. My new house awaits. Take care, Mia."
"Goodbye, Gina. Thank you for your guidance," Mia said with gratitude.
As Gina walked away, Mia returned to her house, her mind filled with newfound determination. She made her way to the training area in the courtyard, her family following closely, sensing her resolve.
Under the moonlit sky, Mia began her cultivation practice once again. This time, she decided to change her approach, focusing on a single method at a time and allowing the circulation to flow seamlessly from one cultivation aspect to another. After several attempts, a pattern emerged: Body, Mind, Soul, Mind, Body.
As Mia maintained the harmonious cycle, she felt a shift in her energy. A surge of power coursed through her veins. Eager to test her progress, she picked up a specially treated piece of wood, designed to withstand the strength of a cultivator at the third rank of the Ki Gathering stage. With a determined strike, the wood shattered, leaving Mia stunned and her family amazed.
Her parents and siblings cheered, overjoyed by Mia's breakthrough. Amidst the celebration, Mia's mind turned to Gina, the wise woman who had provided the missing piece to her cultivation puzzle. Gratitude swelled within her heart, and she made a silent vow to repay Gina for her invaluable guidance.
Chapter 8: Trials of Adulthood
Kai and Choi stood before Huang and Lin, ready to absorb the wisdom and guidance they were about to impart. Huang cleared his throat and began, "Boys, now that Kai has turned 15, it's important for you both to understand the significance of this milestone. While you are considered adults in the eyes of the law at this age, you must prove yourselves to be valuable members of our society within the next five years."
Kai nodded, absorbing his father's words. "I understand, Dad. I want to show everyone that I'm capable of taking care of my future family and contributing to our community."
Huang smiled proudly. "That's my son. You need to find a job on your own, showcasing your skills and abilities. While I will always be here to support you, it's crucial for you to demonstrate your independence and capability to the world."
Choi, listening intently, chimed in, "What about me, Dad? I still have a few months before I reach 15. What should I focus on during this time?"
Huang turned his attention to Choi. "You have a little more time to prepare, Choi. Take this opportunity to learn and gather knowledge. Ask questions, observe others, and acquire the skills that will serve you well when your time comes."
Lin interjected, "Boys, I think it's important for you to understand the expectations surrounding marriage as well. In our culture, marrying young is customary, and being a single 20-year-old can carry certain implications. It's important to find a suitable partner and fulfill your responsibilities as adults."
Lin also gave the boy a basic sex education, things like how the periods of women worked, pregnancies and sexual diseases. Sex is not something foreign to most kids in this world, while its not something parents do in front of their children there are plenty of animals around that kids soon understand the basics that sex makes babies.
Kai and Choi exchanged glances, absorbing this information. Lin continued, her tone firm, "But I want to make something very clear. You are not to become playboys, using your father's name or perceived wealth to engage in casual relationships. If I find out that you're disrespecting others or treating relationships casually, there will be severe consequences."
The boys nodded, understanding the gravity of their mother's words. Lin added, "When you court a girl, make sure she is someone who can run a household independently if necessary, and be as loyal as our faithful Onyx. A strong and trustworthy partner is crucial."
With Lin's instructions given, she excused herself, leaving Huang alone with the boys. Huang's gaze turned serious as he looked at them. "Now, there's something important I need to discuss with both of you. It concerns a spell passed down in our family. But before I proceed, I need your absolute vow that you will never mention or teach this spell to Mia. The consequences would be too great for me to bear."
Curiosity mingled with determination in Kai and Choi's eyes as they exchanged another glance. Kai spoke up, "We swear, Dad. We won't breathe a word about it to Mia. We understand the responsibility."
Satisfied with their response, Huang continued, "The spell I'm about to teach you will fortify your bodies beyond their natural limits. As body cultivators, it will enable you to become stronger, even if you can't reach the higher ranks of cultivation. However, there is one side effect you must be aware of. The spell can make you incredibly aroused if you're not accustomed to its effects."
The boys listened attentively, their curiosity piqued. Huang went on, "I can maintain the spell all day without being affected by the side effects, but it's different for beginners. I advise you to practice the spell only in private spaces, like near a toilet, in a safe part of the forest, or with a trusted partner who understands and supports your cultivation journey."
Kai and Choi nodded, understanding the importance of caution in their practice. They took the oath to keep the cultivation spell a secret from Mia, fully comprehending the potential consequences if they failed.
Anyone looking from the outside would think that it was strange how Huang and Lin were talking but sometimes you need to be formal or the point doesn't get across.
–
Months had passed since Kai embarked on his journey into adulthood. He had taken on various jobs, from farming to construction and even working as a cashier in a shop. Huang had always emphasized the importance of understanding how things worked, believing that it made protecting them easier. Kai had come to appreciate the wisdom in his father's words.
As a guard, Kai soon realized that his role was not just about killing monsters. It was about safeguarding the entire city. He remembered one incident where he had to protect a farm from a swarm of monstrous rats. Thanks to his experience working on a farm, he devised a plan to lure the creatures away, saving the crops from further destruction. Kai understood the value of his diverse work experiences, as they had provided him with the skills and knowledge needed to fulfill his duties effectively.
Meanwhile, Choi had found his calling as a scout. His keen senses and exceptional memory made him a natural fit for the role. He assisted Kai in his search for a suitable marriage partner, honing his scouting and information gathering abilities. The brothers trained together in their courtyard, their bond growing stronger as they pursued their respective paths.
One day, as they trained together in the courtyard, Kai couldn't help but chuckle. "Choi, it won't be long before Mia reaches Rank 4 and catches up to us. The jokes about us being weaker than a little girl might soon become a reality."
Choi burst into laughter, his amusement contagious. They had often endured playful taunts from their friends about their sister's progress surpassing theirs. However, they embraced the upcoming milestone with laughter, knowing that Mia's potential was far greater than what others could fathom.
As they took a momentary break from their training, Choi leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "By the way, Kai, I heard something interesting today. There's a girl in town who seems to match your criteria for a wife. She's recently moved here with her family."
Kai's interest piqued, and he turned to face his brother. "Really? Tell me more about her."
Choi smirked, enjoying his role as the informant. "Well, she's beautiful, like Mom. Works at a restaurant, so I'm guessing she knows her way around the kitchen. Her family seems alright, nothing bad to report. And the best part? She's single."
Kai nodded appreciatively. "Thanks for the information, Choi. I appreciate your help in finding a potential partner."
Choi waved it off with a grin. "Hey, what are brothers for? Besides, I've been training my scouting and information gathering skills. It's the least I can do to assist you in this important endeavor and she probably has friends you can throw my way later."
Grateful for his brother's information, Kai began to think about the future. Working extensively as a guard had inadvertently attracted attention from numerous girls, some of whom had even broken engagements in an attempt to catch his interest. While flattered, Kai understood that his future wife needed to be more than just a pretty face. She had to be someone who could fit seamlessly into their family, provide support to other family members, and possess qualities beyond domestic chores.
Furthermore, Kai recognized the importance of finding someone who would not be intimidated by Mia. Though she had not yet displayed her true abilities outside their home, her training sessions occasionally astonished the entire family with her mana manipulation. Kai couldn't help but wonder how many nicknames Mia would have earned if people knew the extent of her capabilities.
With these thoughts swirling in his mind, Kai and Choi concluded their training for the day and retired to their sleeping quarters. Kai contemplated how to approach the girl his brother had found, knowing that the potential union could shape his future and intertwine their lives. As sleep beckoned, he allowed his dreams to weave possibilities of a prosperous and fulfilling future alongside a partner who met his standards.
Chapter 9: Awkward Encounters
Kai made his way towards the part of town where the restaurant his brother had mentioned was located. Before leaving, he made sure to remember the name of the girl, Mei, just to be certain. After a few minutes of walking, he arrived at the small, newly built restaurant. Despite the limitations in materials and knowledge of the people in this world, the place was surprisingly nice and clean, not that Kai knew anything about modern buildings of Mia's old world.
Taking a seat at one of the few tables, Kai eagerly awaited Mei's arrival. As she approached him, he couldn't help but be struck by her beauty. Her hair was a deep shade of black with a hint of red, glistening under the sunlight. Her eyes were a captivating dark blue, and her lips, adorned with a touch of red, caught his attention. Mei stood at around 145 cm tall, creating a significant height difference of approximately 40 cm between her and Kai. If Mia were there, she would have guessed that Mei was of Korean descent.
"What can I do for you sir?" Mei asked professionally.
Putting his best smile, Kai tried to flirt a little. "I was told that there was something nice here, I guess I found it.".
Mei could just take the compliment But before she could say anything Mia appeared like a ghost. "Hello brother, hello Mei. When did you two started dating? Also I want two meat buns, those I got the other day." She said with a smile on her face in constrast to the surprised faces of both Mei and Kai.
"Hello Mia. I will get your buns shortly and also, I am not the girlfriend of your brother..." Mei said but before she could add anything else Mia cut her.
"Why? He is strong, handsome, has a good job, he is 'hung' whatever that is. Why don't you want to be his girlfriend?" Mia asked in a mix of confusion and anger.
Blushing, Mei felt her face grow warm, and Kai attempted to intervene and stop his sister's prying. "Sister, I just met Miss Mei here, why would I want to be in a relationship with someone I just met? There needs..." Once again Mia cut someone mid sentence to start asking questions.
"Why? Isn't she beautiful? She is also smart, she pretty much runs the restaurant by herself, she also cooks when needed and she smell nice. Why you don't like her brother!?" Asked, with the anger and confusion that was targeted towards Mei now going towards Kai.
Amid the awkward silence that followed, Mia suddenly had an epiphany, though a very misguided one. "Ohhh, now I understand, you still didn't beat her father in a fight, did you brother? Don't worry, our dad said that if you want to make someone their girlfriend you had to beat their dads up. Let me help." Without hesitation Mia darted towards the kitchen in speeds a 7 year old girl shouldn't be able to reach and returned with a confused Shien, Mei's dad. "Mister Shien, my brother here wants to marry your daughter but since you don't leave the kitchen he can't beat you up and earn your approval so while you two fight I will help in the kitchen. Go get him brother!" Mia explains loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear, leaving more than a few confused looks as she darts back to the kitchen.
Shien, a man of the same height as Kai with hair the same color as Mei's but with black eyes, sat down at Kai's table, clearly puzzled. Kai, finding himself in a difficult position, greeted the man and offered a brief explanation of who he was."Hello sir. My name is Kai, I am a new guard here in the town, you might know my dad, Huang. I hope you and your family could find time to visit our house so we could discuss the relationship between me and your daughter." Kai said as best as he could. He came here to see a girl and was now arranging a marriage interview. Who could have predicted that."Also, if you could forgive my little sister, I would appreciate it. Sometimes she has a little too much energy."
Nodding, Shien began to talk. "...Sure, since my daughter hasn't said anything yet I guess there is no problem. Let me make something special to commemorate the occasion." A few minutes later, Shien emerged from the kitchen, accompanied by Mia, carrying two plates of noodles containing a flavorful mix of various meats and vegetables.
Mei returned with the two buns Mia had requested and, after handing them to her. Her father also asked her to sit with Kai, encouraging them to talk and enjoy the food. Mia excused herself, leaving behind a confused atmosphere in the restaurant. Kai and Mei found it difficult to look each other in the eye but began eating. To their surprise, the dish turned out to be one of the most delicious things they had ever tasted.
After finishing their meal, Kai began to talk. "I hope to see you soon." The message was short but powerful, showing that even after everything that just happened, he really wanted this to go somewhere. As he began to leave, Mei stopped Kai and gave him a kiss on the cheek, indicating that she too was looking forward to it. Soon after, back at home with his family minus Mia, Kai recounted the events that unfolded at the restaurant. Choi burst into fits of laughter upon hearing the story, while others remained suspicious, considering the possibility that Mia had orchestrated everything.
Unbeknownst to them, Mia had simply been having a rough day, with her childlike mind momentarily disconnected from her adult soul, resulting in a complete lack of restraint. Her behavior had taken an unexpected turn, causing quite a stir.
Chapter 10: Secrets and Reflections
As Mia stepped out of the restaurant, a sense of satisfaction washed over her. She was glad she had helped her brother and brought happiness to his budding relationship. With a spring in her step, she hurried towards Gina's house, where the old woman awaited her arrival along with the promised meat buns. Ever since Gina had assisted Mia with her cultivation issue, they had developed a weekly routine of meeting and exchanging knowledge about the world, not that Mia knew much, it was mostly her hearing Gina talk about the world and the things in it.
Upon reaching Gina's house, Mia entered with a cheerful greeting and apologized for any delay caused by her detour to help her brother. Once inside, they settled on the soft pillows that served as makeshift couches in Gina's living room. The aroma of freshly baked meat buns filled the air, accompanied by a steaming pot of tea placed on the low coffee table between them.
As they enjoyed the savory buns and sipped on their tea, Gina started to talk. "Unlike the other times, today I want to tell you about the gods of our world.". Mia looked puzzled, her adult soul finally grasping the concept of religion, or rather the lack thereof, in this world. Outwardly, her confusion was evident as she awaited Gina's explanation.
Gina continued. "In ancient times the mana on the world was thin, almost nonexistent. Monsters were nonexistent and the various races were yet to find each other."
Curious about these races, Mia interrupted Gina's explanation."Other races? Like, other types of humans? I never heard or read anything about other races."
Chuckling a little Gina continued. "The world is vast, little girl. Out there in the world there are various other races but the most common are the elves, dwarfs and beast-people. The Elves are much like us, just a little more slender, with long pointy ears, long lifespans and a greater affinity for magic than most people. The dwarfs are a small race of people. They still look like us humans to some extent. They are short, bulk, the males have really long beards that they love to show off. They also are naturally able to mold earth and metal. Lastly are the beast-people. They are as diverse as the animals in the world. They are half-human, half-animals with some looking more human or animal depending on where they live. You will find them on the water, land or sky. There are some other small races here and there but you will probably never interact with them so let's not mention them."
Continuing her narrative, Gina shifted the focus to the gods again."In those ancient times, 6 people of unknown races obtained power not matched even by the most powerful of today's world. Somehow as if by destiny they found each other and ventured to the center of the world. There they found a sealed door and once they opened it, mana began to pour into the world like never before. At that moment they ascended and became higher beings, gods. With their newfound power and understanding they made people around the world build 6 temples to teach and train people on how to survive the new age that was coming. Sadly any history after this was lost with only a few surviving text about the origins of the demons found in the only remaining temple not completely destroyed
"Where demons come from, what are they? I heard people talking about demons but none ever appeared near here." Mia inquired, confused.
"Demons are beings from another world. They feed on negative emotions and manifest themselves in places with lots of mana and death." Gina explained in a sombre tone.
Mia's mind raced as she processed the information. Gina's teachings so far had opened her eyes to the magical aspects of everyday life. Mundane objects and creatures she had once taken for granted now held a newfound wonder. Mana seemed to imbue everything, altering and mutating the natural world in subtle yet fascinating ways. The diversity of magical apples, each with its unique effects, and animals instinctively wielding spells in creative manners astounded Mia. And monsters, depicted in various media from her previous life, appeared even more diverse and awe-inspiring. Without her access to knowledge from her previous world, the descriptions of the world's more dangerous creatures would have left Mia trembling in fear.
After a few moments of reflective silence, Mia noticed that darkness was gradually enveloping the sky. She thanked Gina for her enlightening conversation and bid her farewell, heading back home. Gina sat alone, once again surrounded by her pillows, lost in her thoughts. She contemplated her role in teaching Mia, wondering if she was truly doing the right thing. "Mia, I hope you can forgive me for lying to you. I just hope that this old lady's intervention will lead to something positive for once."
