Chapter 2 - White-Haired Girl

Emery awoke from his brief lack of consciousness. The itching and festering remained, but the mind-numbing pain was gone.

He looked to the side where the blue screens floated, eyes hovering on them weakly.

Those he would deal with later. Instead, he got to his feet–this time to assess the girl in front of him.

Her skin was a light shade of brown and her hair was a stunning white colour with purple strands running through it. Then it happened.

The girl looked up, revealing a bright hue of purple that stared back into his eyes.

Strange could hardly describe it. He'd heard of people gaining different eye colours after the apocalypse, but it was still amazing to see. It was almost… inhuman to see in a real person.

Two thin strips of cloth covered her most private parts, but that was the last thing he cared about at that moment.

What was she? Who was she? Was she hurt from the Class Five too?

The questions ran through his mind faster than his brain could answer them, but his experience as a chef took over.

Restaurant critics and kitchen pressure. Perhaps they had been building his character up to this one moment. Fear wasn't an option at this option, so… he decided to go for it.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

"Can you speak?"

Silence again.

Now he was getting frustrated. How would he even communicate with someone who couldn't even speak?

Emery sighed.

'How am I even supposed to go about this?'

The question lingered in his mind for a while, and the answer didn't seem to be coming anytime soon.

'A calm chef is a good one but a patient one is the best.' He took in a deep breath and repeated the mantra inwardly.

"Where…" He pointed at the air, then at himself, "Are… You… From?"

Silence came again. Emery put his hands down slowly. English didn't work and sign language didn't work. What to do now-

"Un…" A voice hummed.

He raised a brow and quickly looked at the white-haired girl who remained completely silent before. She pointed a single finger towards her stomach, causing it to click in his head finally.

"You're hungry?" He asked, also pointing towards his own stomach.

"Unn."

That was something!

Emery did a little dance of joy before realizing the most important fact. Food was a universal language, but only if you had the ingredients to speak it.

"I'm sorry," He said, "I'm all out of ingredients. I would have fixed us a nice meal if I still had any in the first place."

Emotions could still be conveyed no matter the language anyone was speaking, so as soon as he was finished, the girl's face drooped and her arms fell to the side weakly.

"I'm sorry-"

He was stopped mid-way as the girl jumped out of her sitting position and took off in a short sprint towards the open part of the building that the Class Five had blasted away.

The rocks and debris jutting out of the ground didn't seem to bother her one bit, as she grew even faster until finally…

She jumped out of the side!

It took a little less than a second for Emery to realize what had just happened. But a second later, it was too late.

"The beast might still be there!"

He made his way towards the edge, hoping it wasn't too late.

The scream hadn't come yet, but he knew it would. He knew she would di-

BOOM~!

A loud explosion resounded from the bottom, completely different from the deafening screams of pain he was sure would happen when she reached the ground.

Whatever had landed on the bottom had landed on someone's car, smashing it completely and sending a cloud of dust flying up into the air.

"Fucking hell, I only said I didn't have ingredients. What did she have to commit suicide for?!"

Emery cursed, heading towards the door even faster than when the Class Five had chased him. He jumped over several floors' worth of debris, trying to locate the hyperactive silver-haired girl.

Smoke filled his nostrils, passing down his lungs in an attempt to suffocate him, and dust clouded his eyes. But that was the best-case scenario. The Class Five was nowhere to be found.

Where did she go to?!

He swatted the dust cloud out of his eyes, sending a burning sensation running up his arm and the persistent sting in his legs to increase tenfold.

Stopping wasn't an option.

He dodged as well as he could, avoiding wreckage, flames and rocks until he finally left the dust cloud.

And when he saw it, it was hard to put into words, but she looked way more beautiful than he'd originally felt.

Rays of moonlight shone atop her, enunciating the silvery mop of hair, and the backdrop of darkness behind only served to make her purple eyes more prominent than they had already been.

More importantly, it was the creature that lay collapsed beneath her feet.

He recognized it in an instant. The feline was white, with dark red stripes running down its side. It looked like a tiger, but slightly bigger than an ordinary one. It was easily distinguishable by the barbed tail that now lay immobile to the side.

Emery wouldn't forget what it looked like unless he suddenly went senile and got dementia.

It was the very same beast that gave him the scars that so heavily held him back. And she killed it for him. Her beauty only grew and grew the more he looked at her.
