Chereads / Resilience of the Abyss / Chapter 26 - Wayfarer

Chapter 26 - Wayfarer

However that wasn't to say there wasn't any opportunity or chance for those that found their way here. They only needed a bit of endurance and a lot of guidance, all of which Jacob checked.

He continued his maniacal outbreak, yelling out curses and profane words at the abyss, he relished in his outbreak all the while ignorant to the changes taking place within him.

Deep inside his body, a shard as black as night glowed resplendently, collapsing in on itself, folding it's edges into itself as it morphed into a ball with much smaller dimensions than the shard it formed off.

It constricted until it wasn't more than a pinch sized bead. Migrating itself to his glabella. Jacob paused, suddenly feeling strange. His aura changed, becoming more…natural.

His conscious effort to maintain equilibrium with the environment became instinctive. His smile widened, he could feel it in his bones. He's become more powerful.

Abyssal particles passing through him wrapping around his viseras, tempering them again and again. Although the effects were minimal, they stacked and seemed to be a permanent increase.

In addition to all this, he felt additional knowledge pouring into his brain. It felt strange and when he even tried to recall it, it was the familiar old tome which had up till now only been his mind's structure of his gained knowledge that appeared in front of him.

Its pages swung open revealing a magic circle of sorts, with strange writings beneath it. Surprisingly he could read it.

"Wayfarer's path?...Is this a magic circle?"

Jacob stared at the unusual symbol in front of him, looking at it from different angles.

After studying the page in front of him, he realised he was now a wayfarer, apart from this. He also further understood the workings of this plane, he came to the understanding of how this place wasn't just a golden land of treasures, but a prison, one that eats away at your existence. This conclusion made Jacob draw in a large breadth.

"...To think I've been so casual about this, any misstep and I could end up trapped or worse. Then again I already lost my life twice, i'd like to see how much more you can take from me"

A fiendish grin made its way to Jacobs face.

"Oops I did it again, man it's getting hard to control my urges these days… anyways guess I'll just have to be a little more careful. Now what's with the magic circle…ughh I'm not familiar with these things, I don't understand it at all, come to think of it I don't recognize the language of the writing but I still understood it"

After a couple minutes of trying to wrap his head around the illustration, he heaved a deep breadth signalling his surrender.

"Do I really have to go to the guild building for this… what to do now? Oh I should check out how much stronger I've become"

With that in mind, he threw a fist out casually, consciously this time without thinking of the motion.

Unfortunately the scene of concentrated circles of air and Sonic booms he half expected didn't occur. It rather came off as normal, weak even.

Jacob frowned, wasn't he supposed to be stronger, what the hell was this, even though he didn't take a proper stance, it shouldn't have mattered, this wasn't the first time he threw a punch in this world.

It simply didn't make any sense whatsoever, so he did what any other person would, he threw another one, this time with proper stance and posture.

But the results weren't to his expectations, while it was indeed stronger than the previous punch, their effects couldn't have been distinguished by a layman eyes.

Unsatisfied with what he was seeing, he set to carry out more tests.

He draged his left leg backward a few centemeters from his right, his arms also mirrored this position, his knees and his upper body leaned forwards completing the preparatory posture for a sprint.

All of a sudden his his heels lost contact with the ground, his entire body blurring into nothingness appearing a few hundred metres away.

Jacobs face scrunched up further, he was obviously faster than before, far faster than before, unfortunately he found it weird, the wind didn't kick up, the ground didn't cave in, the cacophonic booms that should have sounded as he broke through the sound barrier were nowhere to be heard.

The sound barrier itself seemingly allowed him to pass through without kicking up a fuss, or was it even there at all? Nothing seemed to make sense, the world didn't seem to acknowledge his actions. It was comical in a sense, making Jacob let out a little chuckle.

Hadn't he just been raining insults and curses on them a while ago, now it seemed they've decided to turn their nose up at him and stick out their tongue.

"A bit childish if you ask me but whatever, do what you will"

With that Jacob ignored the uncomfortable feeling he felt, sending his mind back on the sprint he just ran, if he wasn't the one who ran it he would have sworn he teleported, but the movements were undeniable, he rembered each stride he took to detail, scarily so. It seemed his body wasn't the only thing that got stronger.

But didn't that mean he could do it now, he felt it was possible before but now his body gave him new found confidence in this abilities.

"There no harm in trying now is there?"

So he drove into focus, imagining himself suddenly appearing on a Sandy hill close by. Before he could even complete his thoughts, he realised his field of vision had changed and his vantage point higher.

First he was confused then shocked, that was too easy, annoyingly so. He didn't even get to feel the process, his field of vision merely changed. He didn't even know what to feel,

"Wait if this is too easy, then…"

his mind couldn't help but wander into grander ideas, and as any other person would he immediately acted on them, The image of a rundown room with ceilings leaking and creaky floors came to his mind.

With the recent advancement to his mind recalling a detailed image of his room was childs play, finally he added the final touch, adding to the rooms image in his mind an identical figure of himself.

On willing himself to appear in the room, his mind suddenly drifted to something else, a familiar magic circle, it seemed to come to life as it glowed a dull purple gold. Its rims rotating on itself.

Subsequently Jacob himself seemed to be stuck in a trance, his left arm stretched out and the same magic circle in his mind took shape around his wrist.

His deep onyx eyes also reflected the same purple gold image in his mind, his lips parted slowly releasing a word that had been resounding in his mind

[PATH]

Imediately the magic circle surrounding his wrist kicked up mommentum spinning like the one in his mind, the world that had been ignoring him couldn't any more, abyssal particles aggregated in front of his outstretched hand, following the spiral of the circle until a deep black oval portal with purple gold runes on it's edges manifested in front of him.

For the first time since his advancement, he felt a massive drop in his strength as his fatigue climbed by the second. The portal dimming in size the more he faltered.

Resolving himself to confirm his thoughts, Jacob quickly stepped through the portal, a familiar dosociance assaulting him as he walked through.

Ignoring the uncomfortable felling he struggled to observe what was happening.

As he stepped out his body, or more accurately his spirit body was pulled into a figure sitting in silent meditation, unceremoniously fusing with it's anchor.

(i.e his real body)

"Holy cow!!"

Jacob exclaimed as his eyes fluttered open, he half doubted whether it would work, even after the portal opened he assumed something unfavourable

would happen to him with his kind of luck, but it actually worked, he crossed plains.

Didn't that mean he'd be able to enter the abyss with his real body, how much more would he improve with that, who knows it might be part of some conditions to unlock more power or something.

The prospects were so exciting, he grinned again, his urges beginning to act up.

Butt were they really urges this time, anybody would be excited at this discovery
