Chapter 37 - The Combat Test [2]

The transition from one battle to the next was seamless in the realm of the VR simulation. Scion's perception of time and space blurred as he was instantaneously transported to a new arena, his body feeling rejuvenated. He was aware that the digital restoration was a result of the virtual nature of the battles.

Before him stood his next adversary, a tall, imposing figure with short, tousled hair and a toned physique. Her name was Michelle, and the sharp features of her face, along with the attire she wore, gave her an unmistakable air of masculinity. She looked like someone who knew her way around a fight, and Scion was ready to meet the challenge head-on.

With a polite nod, Scion offered his introduction. "I'm Scion. May this be an honourable duel."

Michelle returned the nod with a curt, "Michelle. Let's make it a good one."

The arsenal of weapons lay nearby, and Scion's eyes landed on his trusty sword, its gleam of familiarity beckoning to him. He knew it well, having wielded it in previous battles. A weapon he could depend on. On the other hand, Michelle collected all manner of armaments, stacking them beside her in an impressive pile.

As Scion watched her gather weapons, he could only surmise that she intended to employ a multi-faceted strategy, perhaps switching between weapons to keep her opponent off balance. With around thirty seconds before the barrier would drop, the pieces of the puzzle started coming together in his mind.

Just five seconds before the battle was set to begin, Michelle's voice cut through the anticipation, her cry of "Summon!" punctuating the countdown. In a flurry of mystic energy, the metal of the collected swords infused together, forming a formidable minigun. It was a transformation that took Scion by surprise, and he understood that this fight was about to become a whole lot more intense.

The barrier dissolved, and Scion barely had time to react. The barrage of bullets spewed forth from the minigun, infused with Michelle's mystic energy, made the air tremble as they shot towards him. Acting on instinct, he summoned his Solar barrier, the radiant shield appearing just in time to catch the onslaught.

The barrier, a shimmering wall of golden light, held against the ferocity of the bullets. Each round exploded upon impact with the radiant surface, creating a brilliant display of Solar energy. Scion gritted his teeth as the barrier gradually weakened under the continuous assault, the radiant light flickering with each impact.

He realized that Michelle's ability might be related to weapon manipulation, a formidable talent in a virtual combat situation. Her mystic energy had reshaped the swords into a minigun of devastating firepower, a feat that filled Scion with a mix of admiration and determination.

With a bead of sweat trickling down his brow, Scion maintained his concentration on the Solar barrier. The virtual pain coursing through his being was mitigated, but the intense pressure of the bullets still seeped through. As he stood resolute, the barrier endured, offering him the protection he needed in the face of relentless gunfire.

In a brief moment of respite, he assessed the situation. Scion had the advantage in close-quarters combat, but at a distance, Michelle's minigun held the upper hand. He needed a strategy that would close the gap and nullify her long-range advantage.

Before the barrier could shatter, he focused his thoughts on a Solar-powered counterattack. The virtual battlefield was suddenly bathed in a blinding light as a concentrated beam of Solar energy shot from Scion's form. The radiant beam pierced the barrier of bullets, blinding Michelle for precious seconds.

With haste, Scion lunged towards his opponent, eager to capitalize on the temporary disadvantage. Michelle managed to react in time, deflecting Scion's initial strike with the flat of her sword. Her agile response left a shallow cut on his arm, a reminder of the fine line between victory and defeat.

Michelle, recognizing that she couldn't maintain her offensive position, yelled "UnSummon!" In an instant, the minigun disintegrated, leaving raw metal scattered in its wake. Scion, momentarily caught off guard, took an indirect hit from the flying shrapnel.

Seizing the opportunity, Michelle closed the distance with remarkable speed and delivered a mystic-infused punch. Scion managed to evade the full force of the attack, but it still landed with enough impact to send him sprawling.

Regaining his footing, Scion noted that he had dropped his sword during the exchange. The realization sent a jolt of unease through him, for he knew that in close-quarters combat, he held a distinct advantage.

With a quick mental command, Scion summoned Solar energy to the palms of his hands, transforming them into radiant pistols. He fired multiple Solar projectiles in rapid succession, each one finding its mark. The sharp pain registered in Michelle's form, and it seemed that the tide of the battle might be turning.

But Scion's resources were waning, and he knew he couldn't rely on this tactic for long. He needed to finish this battle decisively.

Michelle, her figure bathed in the searing energy of her mystic abilities, prepared for one final strike. Scion was momentarily caught off guard, his energy reserves running low. He mustered all the Solar power he could, forming a protective barrier. The barrier, though weaker than before, was still a shimmering wall of golden light, offering him a final layer of protection.

In the pivotal moment, Michelle cried out, "Summon!" and Scion's eyes widened with dread. The virtual world shifted, and a gun appeared in her right hand, Scion knowing full well how fast the bullet was instinctively dodged. But there was no gunshot... Scion knowing something was up viewed Michelle's left hand, the sword that Scion previously held managed to end up in her hands. She delivered a lightning-fast thrust towards Scion. He managed to pivot away at the last moment, but not enough to evade the blade completely.

The sword pierced his side, and agony flared through his form. The taste of virtual blood filled his mouth as he clutched his wound, the disbelief of the outcome washing over him.

Scion's vision wavered, his form losing its digital coherence as he began to fade. He couldn't feel his body; he was trapped in a state of numbness. Blood spewed from the wound, and he was conscious of his impending defeat.

The virtual battleground vanished, and with it, the intense pain ceased. Scion stood once more in the antechamber, fully restored. The virtual wounds had vanished, but the memory of his earlier demise lingered.

Michelle, who had triumphed in their duel, remained silent for a moment, the weight of the battle's outcome sinking in. After a brief pause, she finally spoke. "You put up a valiant effort, Scion."

Scion's gaze remained downcast, accepting the truth. "I wasn't good enough."

Their next opponents awaited, and they would enter the next battle with a new sense of understanding. The VR simulations were as much about learning from defeat as they were about celebrating victory. Scion was eager to refine his skills and face the challenges that lay ahead.

In moments, they would be transported to the next arena, where the Combat Test would continue.
