Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Worm Virus

The sun glinted off the towering skyscrapers of Emoji City, reflecting in the windows of the sleek black car as it sped towards the futuristic metropolis. Shin pressed his face against the glass, eyes wide, taking in the holographic billboards flashing by and the bustling crowds of humans and emoji characters filling the streets.

Shin gazed up at the towering skyscrapers, taking in the chaotic symphony of the metropolis. Air taxis buzzed between buildings while streams of emojis crowded the sidewalks below. A smile spread across Shin's face as he stepped onto the busy street, eager to dive into the city's energy.

"We have arrived, young master," said Mr. Takahashi.

"Wow!" Shin leapt up, buzzing with excitement. "I can't wait to get out there and explore the city!"

Shin imagined himself racing through the crowded streets, weaving between vendors selling emoji-shaped treats, exploring the towering academy where he would soon start his training. His heart pounded as the car slid to a stop at a warning of a red stop at a robot.

"Alright, Takahashi, stop here," Shin said, patting the butler robot on the shoulder. "I'll walk the rest of the way to the academy."

Takahashi's eyes flashed. "But Young Master, your orientation begins in thirty minutes. We must proceed directly to the campus."

Shin waved dismissively. "I want to explore the city first. Don't worry, I'll make it to the academy on time." He flashed a confident grin. "Now let me out!"

With a robotic sigh, Takahashi pulled over and unlocked the doors. "As you wish, Young Master. Please exercise caution during your excursion."

"Will do!" Shin hopped out onto the sidewalk. He took a deep breath, energized by the city's kinetic spirit. I've been waiting for this freedom forever. No more homeschooling - I'm finally on my own! Shin thought, setting off into the crowd. He wove between busy emojis, marveling at the towering holographic billboards. Though he knew Takahashi worried, Shin felt absolutely exhilarated. This was his city now, and his future began today.

Shin strolled down the busy sidewalk, taking in the sights and sounds of the futuristic metropolis. All around him, emojis of every shape and color went about their days - laughing, chatting, rushing to their next destination. Shin grinned, thrilled to finally experience the freedom of exploring on his own, outside of the confines of homeschooling.

Up ahead, a group of Emoji Academy students relaxed in a small public square. Shin observed their carefree energy as they lounged on the steps, backpacks and skateboards scattered around. Two girls with pink bows shared a headphone splitter, bopping their heads to music. A few boys tossed around a soccer ball, while another strummed an acoustic guitar.

Shin felt a pang of envy watching the Academy students. In just a short while, he would join their ranks as a first-year student. But for now, he was still an outsider looking in. I can't wait to make friends like that, Shin thought. To find my people...my place in the world. A new determination rose up in him. He vowed to embrace every opportunity the Academy offered - both in and out of the classroom.

This was his chance to discover who he was, beyond homeschooling and his family's expectations. As Shin continued down the street, the Academy students' laughter and shouts of delight followed him. Their joyous freedom filled him with hope.

Before Mr. Takahashi could protest further, Shin disappeared into the bustling crowd. He weaved between passersby, gazing around in wonder at the soaring towers surrounding the plaza. There was the shopping district, with stores selling the latest emoji tech and fashion. The entertainment sector, with neon-lit restaurants and theaters. And looming just ahead - the towering spires of Emoji Academy-East Gate.

Shin's heart leapt as he imagined himself there, learning the secrets of Emoji Power. For now, he was content to wander the vibrant streets, savoring these last moments before his new life began.

Shin saw a teenage boy and girl slip away from the crowded plaza, holding hands and gazing at each other with excitement. As second-year students at the Academy, they cherished any chance to ditch their busy schedules for a private moment together. It was a weekend after all, the only time students were allowed outside the academy premise.

"This way," the boy whispered, guiding her towards a narrow alley. She hesitated, wrinkling her nose at the unpleasant odor wafting from it. But the boy squeezed her hand reassuringly.

"It will just be for a minute," he said. "I want to give you something."

Apprehension fluttered in the girl's chest, but she trusted him. Taking a deep breath, she followed him into the dark alley. The sounds of the plaza faded away, leaving only the echo of their footsteps on the grimy pavement. She shivered, moving closer to the boy's side.

He stopped and turned to face her, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "I've been waiting all week for this," he murmured, leaning in close. She tilted her face up, allowing her anxieties to dissolve into anticipation.

But just before their lips could meet, a loud crash shattered the silence. The girl jumped, heart pounding, as the boy whipped around to peer into the inky blackness...

The boy's eyes strained against the darkness, searching for the source of the noise. Behind a dented trash can, a strange green glow pulsed. The girl clutched his arm, trembling.

"What is that?" she whispered. After a tense moment, the boy chuckled nervously. "Just a stray cat, probably." The girl nodded, trying to calm her pounding heart.

Creek Creek Creek! The noise persisted.

Cautiously, the boy edged closer. As his eyes adjusted, the shape of some hideous creature emerged from the shadows. Bulbous and oozing, it seemed to be made of pure combination pinkish brown slime. The creature turned, revealing a single massive eye that fixed on the boy. He stumbled back with a gasp.

"Run!" he shouted, but it was too late. With surprising speed, the creature lashed out, enveloping his hand in a thick layer of mucus. He cried out in shock and disgust as the cold slime seeped rapidly up his arm.

The girl screamed. This was no ordinary creature - it was the dreaded Worm virus. The boy clawed desperately at the slime, but he could not free himself from its grasp as it consumed his body. Within seconds, he was gone, vanished into the pulsing green mass.

The Worm turned its gaze to the girl, who stood paralyzed with horror. It oozed towards her, hungry for its next victim...

The girl squeezed her eyes shut and braced for the end. But suddenly, a flash of steel sliced through the air, severing the tentacle reaching for her. She opened her eyes to see a young man standing protectively before her, sword drawn.

It was Shin, ready to face the vile creature. With a fierce cry, he leapt into action, blade singing as he unleashed a barrage of slashes infused with his Enhanced Total Concentration.

At the chanting of "Emoji Art- Fairy God Ultra Slash!" His sword glowed blue as he delivered an upward strike, but to his shock, five more eyes on the Worm's body instantly opened, and in a knick of time it was able to dodge Shin's attack, suffering only a minor cut, and the pieces he cut earlier simply reformed, merging back together seamlessly.

Shin dashed out a few more attacks but the Worm was able to see him wherever he attacked from and managed to dodge all his attacks.

Shin's eyes widened as he realized this creature could see attacks coming from any angle. It had no blind spots. He thought back to his mother's teachings about finding weaknesses in every enemy. There had to be a way.

"Listen closely Shin," Amilia said as she put a blindfold round her eyes training one of Shin's sword training session. "The greatest swordsman's strength does not lie in their sword or sight. It lies in their heart and in their ability to see using their surroundings," she added as she threw her wooded sword a hundred meters across the mansion dojo. The sword sliced the air in half as it glided across the dojo and pierced through an ant that was crawling on the wall at the far end of the dojo, splitting it in half.

"Thanks for the lesson mother, "Shin said to himself as he's mind came back to reality.

Taking advantage of Shin's split second zone out, the Worm Virus attacked, lashing out with surprising speed. Shin barely managed to dodge, his mind racing. If normal attacks were useless, he would need an unconventional strategy. As the pieces clicked into place, Shin's eyes hardened with resolve. It was time to try something new.

Shin quickly sheathed his sword and pulled a small pouch from his belt.

"Let's see how you handle this!"

He scattered a handful of glittering dust into the air. It was pixie powder, a magical substance that could bend light to create illusions. As the shimmering particles swirled around the Worm, its many eyes became clouded and confused. It thrashed wildly, blinded by the dazzling display.

Shin wasted no time capitalizing on its disorientation. Drawing his sword once more, he focused his energy into the blade as it began to glow with a trail of pixie dust.

Shin closed his eyes and took a deep breath, centering his mind and focusing his energy. Just as the Worm Virus launched another attack, he acted swiftly...

"Emoji Art- Plus Ultra Slash!"

He unleashed an devastating overhead slash, cutting deep into the Worm's body. This time the beast could not simply evade or reform. With a shrieking wail, it dissolved into bubbling slime, finally defeated.

Panting, Shin turned to check on the girl he had saved. She sat slumped against the alley wall, eyes glazed over in shock. As he approached, she flinched away instinctively.

"It's alright," he said gently. "The danger has passed."

The softness in his eyes seemed to reassure her. The tension slowly left her body as her eyes fluttered closed. Utterly spent, she had passed out from the ordeal. Scooping her up, Shin carried her to safety, ready to face the next threat.
