Where were the doctors? The nurses? Were there no other patients or visitors? Could no one see Annabelle teetering on the edge of life?
She extended one leg outside, teetering on the precipice, but froze as the sound of a crying baby reached her ears. She withdrew her leg, her expression void of emotion. Her heartless eyes followed the sound.
Walking back with the help of her crutches, she looked through an open window in the corridor, and she knew the source of the cries: a baby lying on a bed, surrounded by crying adults.
A strange squint appeared on her face, before she walked away from the window and entered the room, closing the door behind her.
The sight of a baby laid on the bed with its hands and legs spread apart and eyes closed made her crotch to the floor, and her crutches fell from her.
She clenched her chest, her eyes never leaving the child, and she joined the parents of the child in crying.
