Chereads / The Green Apocalypse: The Apex Invasion / Chapter 14 - Maia or Liora

Chapter 14 - Maia or Liora

Maia's gaze hardened, the warmth in her eyes giving way to a piercing intensity. "There's something else you need to know, Aidan. The terraforming, the invasion, all the horror we've seen - it's a front, a veil over Zorak's true intentions."

Aidan's brows furrowed, confusion mingling with the anger simmering within him. "A front? What do you mean?"

She exhaled heavily, her voice laced with a mix of reluctance and urgency. "Zorak isn't just changing the Earth to make it habitable for our kind. That's part of it, yes, but there's a darker purpose beneath. He's capturing humans en masse. Your people are not just being oppressed; they're being experimented upon."

Aidan's heart pounded in his chest; each revelation drew him deeper into a nightmare reality. He struggled to articulate his shock. "Experimented on? For what?"

"For blood," Maia replied grimly. "Human blood is the final component he needs. My existence, the blending of multiple species' DNA stabilized by human genetics, it's proof of concept for him. He believes that with a systematic application, he can replicate and even enhance what I am across an entire army."

Every word from Maia's mouth hit Aidan like a hammer blow, echoing the dark corridors of truths he had feared yet never fully understood. "So the Earth…" he began hesitantly, "it's not just a new home. It's a breeding ground for a new species, a new army."

Maia nodded gravely. "Exactly, Aidan. This planet, your people, it's all raw material for Zorak's vision of domination. The accelerated plant growth, the invasions - they're both a distraction and a means of corralling humans for experimentation."

Aidan felt a cold shudder run down his spine. The weight of revelation, the scale of the enemy's intentions, bore down upon him, yet in the midst of the engulfing darkness, the flames of resistance burned fiercer.

"No," Aidan said firmly, his voice steeling with resolve. "We won't be anyone's experiments. We won't be harvested and discarded. We will fight this."

Maia looked at Aidan, his determination reflecting in her luminous eyes, reigniting her own buried hopes. In this silent exchange, amidst the revelations and unfolding horrors, an alliance, strong and unwavering, was forged. The journey ahead was treacherous, but in unity, they found strength; in truth, a weapon against the dark forces that sought to claim their world and their existence.

Maia looked at Aidan, her eyes pleading. "Aidan, please don't tell Leia and Naomi. I know I'm different, but I want to be seen as an ally, not a liability or worse, a threat."

Aidan sighed, rubbing his temples. "It's a lot to process, Maia. I understand your fears, especially with how things are now. But secrets can be dangerous too."

She looked down, her fingers playing with the edge of her tunic. "I just want a chance to prove myself to them. To show them I'm on their side."

After a moment of contemplation, Aidan nodded slowly. "Alright, I won't say anything. But remember, we're in this together, and at some point, they'll need to know."

Maia smiled faintly. "Thank you, Aidan."

As they began walking back, Aidan hesitated for a moment, turning to face her. "One more thing, Maia. You said that was the name you took on Earth. What... was your original name?"

A soft glow illuminated her face as she reminisced about her past. "Back home, I was known as Liora."

Aidan nodded, absorbing the new name. "Liora. It's beautiful."

Maia or Liora  smiled, touched by his words. "Thank you, Aidan. Let's rest now; tomorrow is another day of challenges."

Together, they rejoined their makeshift camp, preparing for the trials that awaited them.

Early in the morning, as the soft glow of dawn began to seep into the subway tunnels, Maia's eyes shot open. The subtle vibrations of multiple footfalls echoed in her ears. Swiftly and quietly, she nudged Aidan awake.

"Aidan," she whispered urgently. "I hear something. Footsteps. More than one set."

Aidan's eyes snapped open, his senses immediately on high alert. "How many?" he whispered back.

"Several. Fast. We need to prepare," Maia replied.

Without wasting any more time, Aidan nudged Leia and Naomi awake. "Get up, we've got company," he warned.

Leia, groggily shaking off sleep, grabbed her weapon. "What is it?"

"Footsteps," Maia responded tersely. "We need to set up a defensive position."

Naomi quickly scanned their surroundings. "Let's use those pillars as cover," she suggested, pointing to the large stone columns nearby.

Leia nodded in agreement. "Good idea. Aidan, Maia, take the left. Naomi and I will cover the right."

Aidan and Maia moved swiftly, taking positions behind the pillars, their weapons at the ready. They shared a quick glance, understanding passing between them.

Leia, seeing their exchange but not comprehending its depth, said, "Whatever's coming, we face it together."

Aidan nodded. "Right. Together."

In the tense silence that followed, the echoing footfalls grew louder, signaling the impending confrontation.

The eerie silence that had encapsulated the Egyptian wing of the Met was shattered by the hurried steps and panicked yells of two young teens. They sprinted through the exhibit, seemingly oblivious to Aidan, Maia, Leia, and Naomi's presence, their breaths quick and panicked.

"They're on our tails, Jay!" the girl, no older than 15, yelled to the boy running beside her.

"I know, Lina! Just keep running!" Jay replied, his voice strained with terror.

As the children sprinted past, Aidan's instincts kicked into overdrive. Something was terribly amiss. And almost on cue, two Zyphorian hunters burst into the wing, their menacing forms a stark contrast to the ancient, serene artifacts surrounding them.

They were fast and agile, zeroing in on the terrified children with ruthless efficiency. But just as one of them was about to lunge at Jay and Lina, Aidan and his group sprang into action.

Aidan's rifle roared, bullets slamming into the first hunter. It screeched in pain and anger. Maia, with reflexes enhanced by the alien DNA coursing through her, hurled herself at the second hunter, the spear she wielded cutting through the air with lethal precision.

Leia and Naomi joined the fray, their shots finding their mark, combining firepower with Aidan's. The ancient Egyptian exhibits around them were collateral damage in the sudden, fierce confrontation.

In the midst of the chaos, the young teens, Jay and Lina, crouched down in terror. But before the hunters could recover and retaliate, they were downed - the combined effort of Aidan, Maia, Leia, and Naomi proving too formidable.

As the hunters' lifeless forms hit the ground, a sudden silence befell the Egyptian wing. The dust from the skirmish hung in the air, the ancient stone witnesses to the modern battle.

Aidan, breathing heavily, turned to the frightened children. "You two okay?" he asked, his voice still tense from the adrenaline.

The boy, Jay, nodded, his eyes wide with terror, casting fearful glances at the dead hunters. Lina clutched her brother's hand tightly, silent, but her rapid breathing indicative of her fear.

Maia, her alien heritage hidden, yet always underlying, regarded the children with an enigmatic look. In this moment, amidst the ancient echoes of a civilization long passed, a new, tumultuous chapter of Earth's history was unfolding. One where the lines between friend and foe, human and alien, were inextricably, and perhaps irrevocably, blurred.

Leia stepped forward, her maternal instincts taking over, and crouched down to the children's level. "Hey, it's alright," she cooed, trying to bring some comfort to the trembling siblings. "We're not going to hurt you. We just want to help."

Jay, managing to find his voice, whispered, "We were just looking for food. We didn't think anyone would be here."

Aidan's gaze softened, his protective side emerging. "Where are your parents?" he inquired gently.

Lina bit her lip, tears forming in her eyes. "They... they didn't make it during the invasion."

A heavy silence filled the room, the reality of their situation sinking in once again.

Naomi cleared her throat. "We need to move. Those two hunters might not be the only ones on patrol."

Maia nodded in agreement. "The Met is vast. We can find a more secure place to rest for now."

Aidan glanced at the two young ones. "But first, let's get you both something to eat." He rummaged through his bag, pulling out some energy bars and water, handing them over.

As Jay and Lina eagerly consumed the food, Aidan and his team began discussing their next steps. It was clear that the threat from the Zyphorians was far from over. But for now, in the dimly lit corridors of the Met, amid relics of the past, they found a momentary respite. A small, fragile bubble of safety and hope in a world turned upside down.

Leia looked concerned, casting her eyes on Jay and Lina. "It's dangerous out there. The city isn't what it used to be. Taking these children through that... I'm not sure."

Aidan agreed, "The journey is fraught with peril, but staying here poses its own risks, especially if more Zyphorians decide to investigate."

Naomi, ever the practical one, chimed in, "We can't babysit them here. We have our own mission. Haven's Rest might be the safest place for them right now."

Maia, hesitating a moment before speaking up, added, "Elle would be able to look after them in Haven's Rest. She's compassionate, and the community there is tight-knit. They'll be safer there, at least for the time being."

Leia shot a glance at Maia, curious. "How do you know about Haven's Rest?"

"I overheard Aidan and Eleanor talking when we arrived at the Met," Maia replied, making sure to keep her story consistent.

Aidan nodded, "It's a good plan. Haven's Rest is secure and isolated. The kids will be safe there. But, who will take them?"

Maia looked at Aidan. "I can take them. It might be good for me to go under the radar for a bit. I can slip in and out without drawing too much attention."

Leia raised an eyebrow. "Why you? I mean, you've been with us a short while, and—"

Aidan intervened, "Maia's right. It's easier for her to navigate unnoticed. Besides, she's saved our skin more than once already. I trust her."

Naomi interjected, "Alright, it's settled then. Maia will take Jay and Lina to Haven's Rest. The rest of us will continue our recon and gather intel."

Lina, clutching the remnants of the energy bar, hesitated before asking, "Will we see you again?"

Aidan knelt down, placing a hand on Lina's shoulder, "Of course. We'll make sure of it. For now, Maia will keep you safe."

With decisions made and plans set in motion, the group prepared to set out on their respective paths. The city's altered landscape would prove to be a challenge, but their determination to resist and protect drove them forward.

Aidan's gaze was steady and serious as he approached Maia. The weight of the uncertainty that loomed ahead was a silent storm brewing between the moments of solace and survival. "You better come back to us. If you're not back within six hours, I'm coming to find you," he said, the tension in his voice betraying the worry he was trying to mask. The grip on her hand was both a promise and a plea.

A smile crossed Maia's face, a mixture of reassurance and something deeper, something neither of them had the time to explore in this world of chaos. She held his hand tightly, the warmth serving as a silent assurance.

As Aidan started to turn away, the pull of Maia's hand spun him back towards her. In that moment, amidst the ruins and remnants of a world they once knew, they were just two people facing the unknown, drawing strength from each other.

The kiss was unexpected, a sudden clash of warmth amidst the cold, harsh reality of their existence. When they pulled away, there was a lingering silence, the echo of something unspoken but deeply felt.

Maia's cheeks flushed with a crimson hue, an anomaly in a world so void of color and life. She stammered for a moment, trying to find words that felt incredibly inadequate. "I'll... I'll be back in six hours," she managed to say, the steadiness in her voice contradicting the storm of emotions whirling inside her.

She turned to Jay and Lina, the children whose fate now intertwined with hers. "Stay close," she instructed. Their small, fragile forms were a stark reminder of the innocence that was at stake. The world outside was cruel, unforgiving, and every step they took was a dance with danger.

As they slipped out into the streets, the harsh light of mid-morning cast elongated shadows on the debris-laden paths. The city, once a vibrant testament to human ingenuity, now stood as a somber reminder of a world lost.

Aidan watched them disappear into the silent cityscape. He was a warrior, a survivor, yet in that moment, he was also profoundly human. The kiss lingered, a haunting reminder of a world where love and loss were eternally intertwined.

Leia's voice pulled him back into the reality of their mission. "Aidan, we need to move," she urged. There was a task at hand, a battle to be fought. Yet in the back of Aidan's mind, amidst plans of resistance and survival, a quiet promise echoed - six hours, no more, no less.

The reality of their existence was a delicate dance between the fragility of the human spirit and the indomitable will to survive. In this silent battleground where hope and despair coexisted, every moment was a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit amidst adversity.
