Chapter 4 - Unprecedented

Abel's journey into the realm of the elemental pillar unfolded like a delicate tapestry, each step echoing with the weight of expectation and familial legacy. The chamber, adorned with the subtle opulence of Kaid heritage, bore witness to this pivotal moment. Emelina, a beacon of maternal encouragement, graced Abel with a smile that carried the warmth of unconditional support. In contrast, Jairo Kaid, the patriarch with a stoic countenance, offered no solace, his gaze a piercing arrow cutting through the charged atmosphere.

Summoning the reservoir of courage within him, Abel moved with purpose toward the elemental pillar. As his fingers grazed the cool surface, a ripple traversed the very fabric of reality, ushering him into an alternate dimension. The vibrant hues of the Tides of Eurion dissolved into an inky void, where shadows embraced him like long-lost kin.

In this enigmatic space, the quintessence of magic revealed itself. The five elements, custodians of cosmic forces, converged around Abel in a dance of ethereal grace. Fire flickered with the ardor of a fleeting comet, air swirled in intricate patterns, water cascaded in liquid melodies, earth hummed with the vitality of hidden gems, and lightning crackled with untamed energy. Their collective symphony resonated with the eons-old song of creation.

Yet, as Abel reached out to grasp this ephemeral symphony, the elements remained just beyond his touch. They slipped through his fingers with a tantalizing fluidity, leaving behind an echoing emptiness. In a mesmerizing display, they scattered in all directions, each element finding its own enigmatic path through the cosmic void.

The elemental pillar, a conduit to the arcane forces, deviated from its expected brilliance. Instead, it embraced a transient darkness, an abyssal shroud that veiled the expected luminescence. Abel's countenance, a reflection of his inner struggle, bore the weight of disappointment. No surge of power coursed through him, no profound connection with the elements forged.

Jairo Kaid, his father, grappled to maintain his customary icy facade. Despite his efforts, subtle eruptions of emotion broke through, briefly fissuring his stern countenance. His visage mirrored the reaction one might exhibit when confronted with something truly grotesque. Emelina Kaid, his mother, stood there, her mouth agape.

In that suspended moment, the chamber held its breath, an expectant hush enveloping the onlookers. The room's silence, once pregnant with anticipation, became an oppressive cloak of collective disbelief. Abel, crestfallen and frozen in the aftermath of his elemental endeavor, stood amidst the gasps and murmurs of the hall's audience.

The air itself seemed to quiver with uncertainty as eyes flickered around, reluctant to meet Jairo Kaid's gaze. The patriarch, a sentinel of familial expectations, scanned the room with eyes that betrayed a turbulent storm within. Emelina Kaid, her internal conflict mirrored in her eyes, turned to Abel with a silent whisper on her lips. "Abel..."

His mother's unspoken sentiments lingered in the air, a poignant acknowledgment of the vast expanse between familial bonds and a destiny now adrift, akin to an unanswered plea. The elemental dance, for that ephemeral moment, opted not to engage in its waltz with him.

"Abel…" repeated his mother, even quieter than before. The words that wished to flow found no medium.

Abel, barely catching her words, pleaded, "Please mother, let me try again. I'm sure it was just a mistake!"

She shook her head, unable to voice the thoughts in her heart. Standing before Abel now was Emelina Kaid, the monarch, not his mother.

Jairo Kaid, no longer looking at his son, uttered words coated in disappointment. "Remove yourself from the pillar and this chamber, elementless magician."

Abel complied with his father's command, stepping away from the pillar. As he traversed the space back to his spot among the other participants with his head hung low, he keenly felt the weight of their collective judgment.

Cain approached Abel, intercepting him mid-stride. Leaning in, Cain spoke with a hushed intensity, ensuring only Abel could hear.

"Raise your head. We will become great magicians, just as we planned. I will protect you. We will change this family, and eventually the world."

Abel offered no verbal response. He simply nodded, acknowledging his father's earlier directive.

"Cain Kaid," Jairo Kaid announced, his intonation of Cain's name distinctly different from the way the matriarch had pronounced all the names before.

With those two words, Cain confidently approached the pillar. Jairo Kaid's gaze bore into him, and Emelina watched with bated breath. Cain placed his hand onto the pillar. Moments ticked by, and nothing seemed to happen. The room was filled with suspense, as spectators wondered whether both twins might be deemed failures.

Fate deemed that this would not be the case. The atmosphere in the hall began to shift, as though the very air carried the scent of the open ocean, briny and invigorating. Attendees could almost feel the gentle caress of the sea breeze against their skin and the soothing lapping of waves in their ears.

As if summoned by a benevolent sea goddess, a radiant surge of water magic enveloped Cain. It cascaded from him like a breathtaking waterfall, leaving the audience in utter awe. It was a spectacle unlike any they had ever witnessed—an elemental bond with water magic so profound that it defied explanation.

In the heart of this mystical transformation, Cain stood, his presence a nexus of power and serenity. Water, his chosen affinity, responded to him with unwavering loyalty, swirling around him in a tempestuous dance. It formed intricate patterns that shimmered and sparkled in the ambient light.

This was the birth of a generational talent. The pillar began to dim, and the atmosphere created by the bond slowly dissipated. As the last remnants of Cain's mesmerizing water display faded, the hall erupted into applause. The spectators, who had initially harbored doubts and reservations, were now thoroughly impressed by the young magician's astounding proficiency.

The applause in the hall erupted, replacing the initial doubt and skepticism with admiration. Emelina stepped forward, her eyes sparkling with pride. "Cain, my dear, you have surpassed our wildest expectations. Your affinity with water is unparalleled, and you may be the one to lead our family into a new era."

Jairo offered his praise. "This is promising. You will strengthen the might of Kaid. This was the only response you could demonstrate after that failure's display."

Cain nodded. "Thank you, Mother, Father. I will do my best to honor our family's legacy, but Abel is no failure."

Meanwhile, the remaining children completed their elemental tests, some with grace, and others with a touch of uncertainty. The ceremony concluded with a sense of anticipation and yearning for the future, each young magician now carrying the weight of their elemental bonds and the expectations of the Kaid family.

All but one.
