Cordelia's tricky question was just her public announcement that she was looking at young Lord Ashford as her future partner. If Violet agreed, she would help her consolidate her position as the spouse candidate. If she disagreed, it would be considered greatly offensive to the royal family of the Taica Kingdom.
Either way, there seems to be no right answer to this.
"I don't think this is very appropriate of me to comment on this matter," she avoided the question as much as she could which made the princess triumphally smirk. That expression, for some reason, irked Violet so much that she decided to continue on this futile battle.
