Chapter 11 - Betrayal

As Aaron ventured into the tumultuous world outside, his determination was unwavering. He had promised himself to acquire the ability crystals for both Alice and Isabella, and he would stop at nothing to fulfill that promise. His trusty gun, with only five bullets remaining, was his sole means of defense. He checked it one last time and holstered it, ready to face the unknown.

Chaos reigned in the streets. The world had devolved into a nightmarish battleground, where the living fought for survival against the undead hordes. Aaron moved with calculated precision, avoiding the relentless zombies that roamed the streets, their insatiable hunger driving them forward.

The scene around him was one of despair and violence. People, driven to the brink by the apocalypse, clashed with one another. Some were killed by the zombies, while others fell victim to their fellow survivors. It was a grim reminder of the fragility of humanity when faced with the unimaginable.

Aaron, however, remained focused on his mission. He knew that he had to act swiftly to acquire the ability crystals, and he couldn't afford to get entangled in unnecessary conflicts. His every step was a testament to his resolve.

Amidst the chaos, a stranger approached him. The man's face bore the scars of countless battles, and his eyes held a steely determination. He spoke with urgency, his voice filled with a grim determination.

"We can help each other," the man declared, his gaze never leaving Aaron's. "There's a way to acquire ten ability crystals, but we'll need to work together."

Aaron was wary but intrigued. He knew that, in a world like this, alliances were fleeting, and trust was a scarce commodity. He decided to lay down his terms.

"We team up, but we don't harm any innocents," Aaron stated firmly. "We must retain our humanity."

The man nodded in agreement, his eyes reflecting a hint of something vague. "I couldn't agree more," he said.

With their pact sealed, they set their sights on their target—an individual rumored to possess a cache of ability crystals. As they approached, the man began to share his plan, a strategic assault that would catch their adversary off guard.

As they moved in for the attack, the scene was a chaotic ballet of violence and desperation. Fights erupted around them, and the streets echoed with the sounds of combat. Aaron, the man at his side, stayed true to their vow, doing their best to avoid causing harm to anyone undeserving of it.

The confrontation with their target was fierce and brutal. The adversary fought back with a tenacity that was born of desperation. The three engaged in a skirmish that seemed to transcend the boundaries of a world on the brink of annihilation.

As the battle raged on, Aaron found himself locked in combat with their adversary, each blow and strike carrying the weight of their survival. The man, his ally in this perilous venture, fought alongside him with unwavering determination.

Ultimately, the adversary proved formidable, and it was Aaron who found himself facing defeat. A crushing blow sent him sprawling to the ground, disarmed and defenseless. Just as their adversary prepared to deliver a final, fatal blow, the man turned on Aaron, seeking to betray him.

However, in that critical moment, Aaron's last bullet found its mark. The gunshot reverberated through the chaos, and the man fell to the ground, his treacherous intentions cut short. Aaron had chosen the path of survival, and he would not be swayed by betrayal. He had already used the last 4 to escape previously from tricky situations so he was grateful he still had one left

He retrieved the ability crystals from the fallen adversary, his heart heavy with the knowledge that the world had become a place where alliances were fragile, and trust was a rare and precious commodity.

With five ability crystals in hand, Aaron retreated from the chaos, his mission accomplished. He had secured the crystals for Alice and Isabella, but the world outside remained a crucible of violence and despair.

Aaron arrived home, his senses on high alert, ensuring that he had not been followed. Satisfied that he was alone, he unlocked the door and entered, the weight of the ability crystals heavy in his pocket. He couldn't help but wonder how the interaction with Isabella would unfold.

As he stepped into their makeshift sanctuary, he was met with a confrontational glare from Isabella. Her eyes held a mix of suspicion and frustration.

"Why did you leave like that?" she demanded, her tone laced with accusation. "We were…..She was worried sick."

Aaron sighed, knowing that he had some explaining to do. "I did it because I didn't want either of you to get hurt out there," he said, his voice calm and steady. "and I had to make sure I could bring the crystals back safely without worrying about you girls"

Something in Isabella's eyes shifted. Perhaps she understood his motives, or perhaps it was a glimpse of his sincerity. Whatever it was, her hostility lessened, and she regarded him with a touch of curiosity.

Aaron continued, "You can pick first you know" He said tapping his pockets were the handful of ability crystals he had collected laid, and the soft glow that emanated from them filled the room with an otherworldly light.

Isabella paused for a moment, contemplating her choice. Then, in a tone that was unusually indifferent, she said, "You should choose first. You're the one who went through all that trouble to get them."

Aaron couldn't help but smile at her response. It was a glimpse into a side of Isabella that he had only begun to understand. She might have appeared tough and indifferent, but there was a hint of concern and softness hidden beneath the surface.

Isabella caught his amused expression and snorted. "Don't look so smug. I can practically read your thoughts," she said.

Aaron chuckled, realizing that she had guessed his thoughts accurately. "Very well, let's see what we've got."

Together, they walked into the bedroom, where Alice lay still connected to the drip. Isabella mentioned that she had given her a sleeping drug to calm her down, which prompted Aaron to thank her.

Isabella remained silent, her gaze fixed on her adopted sister, who appeared peaceful in her slumber.

Aaron gently woke Alice, who blinked her eyes open with a hint of confusion. He explained their situation and the purpose of the ability crystals, prompting Alice to look at the glowing crystals in his pockets.

With a sense of anticipation, Aaron asked the system how the crystals worked. The reply was brief and straightforward. [Swallow.]

The room seemed to hold its breath as Aaron dipped his hands into his pockets and opened, revealing the five glowing crystals. It was a new beginning, a step into a world of unknown powers and possibilities.

As the soft glow of the ability crystals filled the room, Aaron spoke, his voice a reassuring presence in the midst of uncertainty.

"Remember," he began, "you can each choose one crystal. We don't know what these crystals contain or what abilities they'll grant us, so let's be cautious and choose wisely."

As Aaron held the glowing crystals in his palm, a sense of anticipation and dread swirled within him. Two indigo, one green, one orange, and one red crystal lay before him, each pulsating with an otherworldly energy. He couldn't shake the feeling that the indigo crystal was calling out to him. With a mixture of curiosity and resolve, he swallowed it, and the world around him shifted.

Suddenly, he found himself transported to an extraordinary dreamscape, a realm that defied explanation. Before him, a surreal and ominous spectacle unfolded. An unseen force commanded an entire army of beings, some zombies, some humans and others were unfamiliar, but something far more mysterious and enigmatic. They moved with an eerie synchrony, like puppets in the hands of an otherworldly puppeteer.

The scene was breathtaking in its intensity, and Aaron watched with a mixture of awe and trepidation. The name of his newfound ability, 'Soul Manipulation,' was projected directly into his mind. Accompanying it was a brief description and a restriction – he could control a maximum of five souls until his level increased

Smirking he couldn't resist saying the name out loud, "Soul Manipulation."

The room crackled with a mysterious energy as his ability awakened. The weird energy circled round him and eventually entering the middle of his forehead.

His eyes were a different shade of purple now and looking around he could see unknown energy flickering around the two girls.

Turning his gaze to Isabella, he found her blue hair now possessed an otherworldly glow. She hesitated for a moment, then whispered the name of her skill, "Ice Manipulation."

Whooooosh

The air became cold as cold energy seeped into her very being, it looked as though it wasn't just touching her body but modifying her as a person.

Alice's eyes shone with an ethereal light as she declared the name of her ability, "Summoner."

Mystical purple energy twirled around her before seeping into her same as the others.

He called for his system.

[Ding]

[New System Message]

Ability: Soul Manipulation

Description: Soul Manipulation grants you total control over a target, particularly the undead. You have a 5% chance to absorb the abilities of the zombie you control before its demise.

This skill is effective only on the undead, and it provides you with a slight resistance to soul-altering attacks.

Notably, you have developed a slight resistance to a zombie's poison due to this newfound skill.

Note: You cannot control a being with higher soul force than you but you can upgrade a controlled beings soul force to any level

Aaron was intrigued by the message and had a burning question. "System, does that mean zombie virus attacks the soul not the flesh? Can you explain that?"

Silence hung in the air, and the system provided no further explanation. Aaron ended the conversation with a sigh, his curiosity unsated.

Turning his attention to the others in the room, he noticed Isabella deep in conversation with her own system. He watched as she conjured a plastic water bottle and attempted to manipulate the water within. With a lack of control, the water froze in an instant, causing the bottle to shatter into pieces.

The room fell into an awkward silence, and Aaron struggled to hold back a burst of laughter. He could see the frustration on Isabella's face, her blue hair seeming to shimmer with irritation. His sister, Alice, couldn't contain her own laughter, which threatened to burst forth like an irrepressible flood.

Finally, Aaron's laughter broke free, echoing through the room. Isabella shot him a glare, a fiery intensity that only fueled his mirth. Even Alice joined in, her laughter ringing out like the tinkling of wind chimes in a summer breeze. Isabella stormed out of the room, feigning anger but carrying a subtle smile that no one noticed.

After Isabella's dramatic exit, Aaron found himself facing Alice's sly teasing. She raised an eyebrow, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You like the nurse, don't you?" she said with a cheeky grin.

Aaron's response was swift and indignant, "What? No way, Alice, you're imagining things." His attempt to brush off the topic only made Alice more determined to press on.

She leaned closer, a playful smirk on her lips. "Come on, Aaron, I've known you forever. You can't hide it from me. I saw the way you looked at her."

Aaron fumbled for words, desperately trying to divert the conversation. "Seriously, Alice, you've got it all wrong." But his feeble denials only made Alice's teasing more relentless.

A mischievous glint in her eyes, she continued to prod him, "So, are you going to ask her out or what?"

Aaron's face turned a shade of red, and he stammered, "Alice, that's not why we're here. Let's focus on more important things, like, um, the zombies."

Grinning like a Cheshire cat, Alice finally relented. "Okay, fine. Tell me, how did the zombies look out there? You're the only one who's seen them up close."

Aaron took a deep breath, his gaze distant as he began to describe the unsettling sight. "They're horrifying, Alice. The crystals on their foreheads are like a death sentence. They move slowly, but there's this eerie, unsettling quality about them. It's just creepy. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's deeply unnerving."

Alice listened intently, absorbing every word. "So, what do we do now? And what about Isabella? Are you really going to let her go out there alone?"

Aaron considered his sister's questions carefully, his brow furrowed in thought. "Well, based on what I've seen in the games I'm good at, we'll likely have to face the zombies head-on. But as for Isabella, I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm worried about her safety but we both know how stubborn she can be."

He offered a comforting smile and patted Alice's shoulder. "For now, rest up. When you're fully ready, we can venture out together and start taking down the zombies. I know you're excited about it."

With those words of assurance, he made his way out of the room, leaving Alice to contemplate their next steps. As he walked through the quiet house, his thoughts turned to the zombies and the mysterious circumstances they now found themselves in.

He couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that the zombies might evolve, becoming even more formidable and menacing. The image of a stronger, more powerful zombie sent a shiver down his spine.

The living room was bathed in the soft, diffused light that filtered through the curtains. Aaron sank into the worn-out couch, lost in his thoughts as he stared at the ceiling. He couldn't help but worry about their uncertain future in this apocalyptic world.

The silence of the house was broken only by the distant moans of the undead outside. He couldn't ignore the feeling that their current safety was precarious, like a fragile bubble on the verge of bursting.

Aaron couldn't help but wonder about the mysteries of the crystals, the enigmatic abilities they had unlocked, and the ominous foreshadowing that seemed to hang in the air. What lay ahead was a journey into the unknown, and he was determined to protect those he cared about.

The hours slipped by, and Aaron remained deep in thought, preparing himself for the battles and challenges that awaited them in a world now ruled by the undead.
