Matthew felt something inside him burning. He dropped onto the bed, clenching at his chest. He could hear his heart beating, the thumping sound getting louder and louder. His vision became blurry and ears rang.
Notification boxes appeared in front of him, one after another, but he was unable to read them. He began to yell, now clenching his head between both hands.
Matthew's door was pushed open and he saw 2 silhouettes enter his room. They were yelling at one another, but Matthew struggled to hear what was being said. After what felt like hours of pain, everything cleared. It felt like the pain and noise vanished almost instantly.
Matthew sat up on the bed, confused. He was the two people still yelling at one another when they stopped and noticed the boy sitting on the bead, no longer screaming.
"Matthew," Linda said, nervously, "Did you absorb a Monster core?"
Matthew shot her a glance that told her everything.
"*Sigh*, I guess that was you having your Mana unlocked. The pain is excruciating and then disappears suddenly. The same thing happened to me when I used the Monster Core Travis had given me."
Linda's eyebrows furrowed, and she glared at Matthew. "Where in the world did you get a Monster Core Matthew?" She asked.
Matthew looked sheepishly at the ground, unable to meet Linda's eyes. "While I was wandering in the forest, I stumbled into a Goblin and killed it, it's where I got the bruise on my cheek," Matthew answered. "I defeated it by pure luck, and it dropped a maroon colored pebble. I decided to use it and then that pain came. Now I have you and Victor in my room."
Both Victor and Linda stared at Matthew. What the boy had said was extraordinary. A 'Rank 0' child defeating a Goblin single handedly? No one in the village would even attempt that at Matthew's age, even some of the older men in the village wouldn't fight a Goblin alone.
"Well then Matthew," Linda said, "I'm not going to congratulate you, despite this being a momentous occasion. That was a stupid and reckless decision. Even though you did defeat it, the chances of that ever happening again are 1/1000. I never want to hear of you fighting a monster while still being rank 0 again, do you hear me?" Linda's eyes were full of worry and concern.
Matthew had only ever seen that look from one person. Throughout his life, the eyes that looked at him were full of disgust, hate, disdain, malice and greed. The only exception was his mother, who looked at him with love and compassion. His eye's began to water and he looked at Linda.
"Yes Ma'am, I understand."
Matthew was wrapped in a hug, his head pulled into Linda's shoulder, as Matthew began to cry even more. A hand rested on his head.
"Don't worry Matthew. With Travis protecting this village, you won't have to worry about that anymore," Victor said. All that was heard, was the sound of Matthew sobbing.

After the waterworks had finished, Linda and Victor left Matthew's room. His eyes were red from the display of emotion he had just showed.
He notices the rectangular outlines in the side of his vision as he wiped at his eyes.
"Oh right!" Matthew said, as he pulled them in front of him.
He had been in too much pain when the notification boxes had first appeared. The feeling of his Mana being unlocked had felt like his insides had been set on fire.
Matthew drew his mind back to the notification boxes and began to read the first one.

"Meridians?" Matthew asked himself. He had wondered why a medical concept that originated from the Chinese was used in this world. Was the system using terms that he would understand? He pushed this thought out of his head as he read the next box.

Matthew looked at the ability, warily. What was this '???' Stat? What did it mean by the ability being linked to it? And He was able to absorb souls? How did that work? Was it something like a necromancy skill? Was he summoning an undead or something? He dispersed the thought and examined the final notification box. It was his status.

He examined his status, and saw that this new '???' Stat was Rank 1, which was higher rank than any of his other stats. He noted that his new ability 'Soul Bound' had linked to the stat and assumed it was the cause of the Rank increase, though he had no idea what the stat was.
He tried to learn more about his stats. He hadn't tried earlier due to circumstances and learned that only his wisdom stat was able to be examined.
