Chapter 5 - Danger Zones

Dorian sat on a piece of crumbled concrete as he processed the information he had gained in the short time that the Golden Oracle had come online.

Firstly, he had learnt that his starting aptitude would be lightning. At first, Dorian had been ecstatic, but he had soon found out that wielding a powerful elemental aptitude was a much greater hassle than he first thought.

In this new world, the abilities wielded by humans were classified into various ranks depending on their rarity and power. The basic elements, that is, air, water, earth and fire, were all graded as abilities in the first rank. More obscure abilities like telekinesis and the like were graded between rank 2 and 3, depending on the power they could express. The scale went up depending on the difficulty, and Dorian's lightning ability was graded as a rank 2 ability at the peak of that rank, with potential leading it into the third rank.

Dorian had gotten all this information from the helpful, but dull sounding Golden Oracle. He was quite irritated by the lack of life contained in its voice, but there was little he could do in that situation.

His ability was classed as a pseudo rank 3 ability, but that did not mean he was immediately capable of displaying an immense amount of power. In reality, Dorian's control over his ability was so poor that he would most likely hit himself with his attack before his opponent could even do it for him!

Dorian pushed all that to the back of his mind for a moment as he examined the map that the Golden Oracle had imprinted onto his mind.

'Can I get an explanation... Um, Oracle?' Dorian asked mentally. 'Do you even have a name?'

A few parts of the map promptly lit up when Dorian finished his sentence. The center of the map remained gray, while a few edges and swathes of landmass became colored in various colors.

[This map is split between the danger zones of each area. The center of the map is your current location. It is a rank 1 danger zone. Normal humans without abilities will find it difficult to survive in this area, but this area has been marked as the training ground of the weaker Hunters.]

The Golden Oracle's monotone voice rang through Dorian's mind as it explained the features of the map.

[The blue areas are rank 2 danger zones, while the yellow areas are rank three danger zones.] It continued.

There were only three shades of color spread over the map. Half of the map was colored gray, marking it as a rank one danger zone. Dorian could easily understand the explanations of the Oracle, sparing its time. The blue areas covered forty percent of the map, marking it as a rank two danger zone, while only a few random splotches of yellow dyed the map, pointing out the rank three danger zones.

[Also, I have no name.]

The Golden Oracle added as Dorian inspected the map, startling him.

'Do you want a name?' Dorian tentatively asked. He had no idea how to approach it, but that would not stop him from trying.

[...]

Dorian received no reply from the Golden Oracle, but he took that as an affirmative. He then began to ponder upon a suitable name as he remained immersed in the map, taking in the various divisions between the danger zones.

Eventually, he recalled his attention from the map just as the perfect name for the Golden Oracle popped into his mind.

'I have it! How does Psyker sound?' Dorian's voice was cheery as he announced the name he had thought up.

[Name registered. Altering fundamental behavior. Rebooting Golden Oracle.]

A series of words passed through Dorian's mind before a flash of light enveloped his vision and made him stagger. His hand immediately went to nurse the slight headache that had formed as he tried to understand what had happened.

[Hello Dorian. Thank you for the name.] An unmistakably male voice thrummed through Dorian's mind, causing his eyes to widen in surprise.

'Golden Oracle?' He hesitantly asked.

[I now go by Psyker, thanks to you.] The Golden Oracle, now Psyker, replied smoothly. It had lost that cold edge to its tone, making it sound much more friendly.

Some time passed as Dorian got used to Psyker's new attitude, and he as soon ready to venture out of his collapsed home after getting some rest.

Dorian made his way up the crumbled staircase that led out of the basement of his former home. When he examined the partially collapsed house, he noted that any valuable thing was missing or already destroyed. He stepped out of the house, only to feel a strange, tingling sensation pass through his body.

"What was that?" He mumbled to himself as he turned around. The sight that greeted him made him gasp and take a step backwards. There was nothing but a pile of rubble behind him. He quickly jumped forward, only to feel that sensation again, and he was back through the collapsed wall of his home.

"Did dad build a cloaking device?"

That was the only possible explanation that he could think of that would be able to shield the collapsed home from outside inspection.

Dorian shook his head before stepping out of the house again and letting the tingling sensation wash over him. He opened his eyes, only to see a one meter tall dog staring at him curiously.
