Chapter 16 - The Long Knives

The Centauri Nebula glimmered with ethereal light as the Federation fleet dropped out of warp space. Admiral Nyra gazed upon the beautiful sight with satisfaction. This would be the perfect location for her secret initiative.

"Begin immediately," she ordered her staff. "And keep scans sweeping full spectrum. I don't want any surprises."

Hundreds of autonomous constructor drones deployed from the fleet, commencing rapid assembly of a space station hidden deep within the gaseous stellar nursery. Nyra had divert considerable resources covertly to this Project Ascension. But she knew the returns would be immeasurable.

As the station took shape, Nyra withdrew to her meditation chamber aboard the flagship. She needed clarity for the challenges ahead. Jason's loyalists still held sway in the Congress and military. Her control remained precarious.

But Project Ascension would change all that. The ancient technologies discovered within the Centauri Nebula's primordial shards would make her unstoppable. Even the feared Loki wouldn't be able to touch her then. She would reshape the Federation into her vision, no matter the cost.

Donning the neural interface crown, Nyra initiated the meditative trance to commune with the embryonic fragments adrift in the nebula. While interfaced, her perception seemed to expand across space and time. Visions poured into her mind of galactic civilizations rising and falling over aeons.

She saw how power twisted noble souls gradually throughout history, as fear and molded ideals. But Nyra had no such illusions. From the beginning, she sought power for its own sake, to sate drives lesser minds chained with morality. She would flood the galaxy with anarchy, then rule the chaos.

Periodically the visions were interrupted by status reports from the station crews. Construction was ahead of schedule. Outstanding. Once the fragments were transferred aboard, her transcendence could finally begin.

Weeks later, Nyra oversaw the highly sensitive procedures as bizarre alien artifacts recovered from the nebula were installed within Ascension Station's restricted laboratories. Understanding their arcane physics would take years. But the power they radiated was undeniable. Soon it would be hers.

"Keep monitoring the containment fields closely," Nyra told her science teams. "We are dealing with forces beyond our comprehension." In truth, she always found the fragments seemed to whisper madness into susceptible minds. But her willpower was unmatched.

However, on the first test activation, cascading energy surges ruptured labs and critically injured personnel. Nyra was outraged by the setback. She should have been aboard to oversee the operation personally.

But the researchers reassured operations could resume safely once ambient energy levels stabilized. The first experiment had briefly unleashed forces equivalent to a supernova, confirming the sheer potential. They begged Nyra for more time.

Grudgingly she assented, returning her attention to internal Federation matters. Her conflicts with Jason and the Congress were reaching fever pitch. Soon the knives would come out. Everything depended on Project Ascension succeeding quickly.

While ascending faster than any officer in history, Nyra lacked traditional prestige, being from the frontier colonies subjugated early in the Federation's expansion. She had sacrificed greatly and compromised morals to claw into the upper ranks. Now she moved to claim the ultimate prize, and crush the old aristocratic order.

During one strategy meeting, security alarms sounded suddenly. "Admiral, our sentry ships are engaging an unknown stealth vessel!"

Nyra hurried to the CIC. Sure enough, powerful energy signatures flared as the automated defenses caught an intruder piercing their perimeter. She smiled coldly. "So, my old friend finally makes his move. Let us see what secrets Loki wishes to steal."

The sleek yacht evaded and destroyed two sentry ships before reinforcements cornered it. Nyra ordered the damaged vessel captured intact. This could be the pretext needed to move against the spymaster and his agents.

Nyra waited triumphantly as marine strike teams stormed the neutralized ship. But to her surprise, they reported finding the crew dead - not Loki agents at all, but some of her own researchers.

"Admiral, we are detecting a transmission source on board," the comms officer said ominously.

Suddenly the yacht's engines went critical. Nyra realized the implications instantly. "Shields to maximum! Evacuate all nearby ships!"

The detonation was tremendous, briefly outshining the nebula's stellar nurseries. When Nyra's vision cleared, only dissipating debris and gas clouds remained. The researchers' yacht was obliterated.

Nyra clenched a fist tight enough to draw blood. This was no Loki operation. Her own scientists must have discovered what she was doing and attempted to flee with intelligence. But to what end...

Deep scans of the debris revealed trace isotopes that made Nyra's blood turn to ice - the radiation signature of Project Ascension fragments. This was a deliberate act of sabotage. Someone knew she had the artifacts and meant to expose the secret to Unknown parties.

Nyra swore terrible vengeance, but kept the full implications to herself. Clearly there were spies within her own staff. Until she identified the extent of the rot, she could trust no one, not even Lakri. The parasites would suffer for their treason...

But there was bigger game afoot, she knew. Whoever intercepted that yacht now was aware of Project Ascension and coming for her. Well, let them try. Soon Nyra would transcend mere flesh. Then none could threaten her vision.

In the weeks that followed, three more Ascension researchers disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Nyra brutally interrogated their aides and families, but found no actionable intelligence. However they had been turned, the rot seemed excised now.

Finally, the station crews declared the fragments stable enough to proceed with integration. Nyra would oversee the process personally this time. She dared not trust anyone else now. Even Lakri was kept oblivious.

The inner sanctum's architecture seemed almost alive, pulsing with alien geometries. In the center, atop a glowing dais, waited the convergence sphere where the fragments would channel their cosmic power into a human vessel - Nyra herself.

"Monitor my vitals closely," she told the surgical team. "This process is unprecedented. We tread the knife edge of destiny."

Strapped into the convergence sphere, Nyra focused her mind as the ancient fragments came online throughout the chamber. She had spent a lifetime mastering pain and transcending mortal frailty. Now that discipline would be tested to its limit. For the Federation's future, no sacrifice was too great.

As the energy buildup reached critical levels, Nyra's body spasmed against the restraints from the sheer unfathomable power surging through it. She gritted her teeth so hard they cracked under the strain as her flesh transmuted.

Visions flooded Nyra's mind, rushes of images and sensations beyond description. For a moment she perceived herself as a titanic entity spread across the stars, before the choking agony broke her delirium. This was greater than any human was meant to withstand. But failure here was not an option. With a fierce cry of rage, Nyra wrenched her mind back under control.

"Admiral, your vitals are fluctuating dangerously! We need to abort!" voices shouted distantly through the howling cosmic gale.

"Stay... the course!" Nyra managed through sheer fury of will. "I command you... by your oaths!"

Indescribable eternities later, the energy levels receded and Nyra collapsed from the convergence sphere more dead than alive. But even as medics frantically worked to stabilize her, she perceived something had changed - subtle but profound.

Recovery took weeks in the secure medical wing. When Nyra was finally strong enough, she ordered a full platoon of Praetorian guards as escort and set out to test her newfound abilities. Cold vengeance awaited now that she had transcended.

The traitorous researchers pleaded innocence under torture, but their lies wilted before Nyra's heightened senses. Deep probing untwisted their minds, revealing every detail of the sabotage and spy ring operating within her staff. It was worse than she feared.

Contrary to hopes, the leaks had originated from Council agents, not Loki. It seemed the old guard were more fearful than she realized, resorting to such schemes to check her thunderous rise. But they had failed. Nothing could stop her now. Fear would be repaid thousandfold.

Tracking leads down a twisting maze of cutouts, client governors, and double agents across many systems ultimately led Nyra to a seaside villa on the resort paradise of Portus, where ruling aristocrats kept luxurious mistresses hidden from duties.

Such decadence disgusted Nyra. She would drag these entitled degenerates into the light to face cold reality. The Federation's future belonged to the strong, not the pampered.

As her Praetorian retinue descended on the glittering villa, aristocratic loyalists emerged with antique laser dueling pistols that barely scratches the body armor of her elite guards before being gunned down. Nyra waved for her men to stand down. The cowardly conspirators trembled as she approached.

"Please, have mercy! We only wished to protect Federation interests from your... brutal vision," their leader stammered nervously.

Nyra smiled without humor. At full exertion, her eyes now blazed with universe-collapsing quantum singularities. "Oh, I'll show you brutality..."

The conspirators' death screams echoed all the way to the azure shoreline. Their insurrection ended today, and with it the old aristocracy's dominion. Now the future could truly begin.

During the years that followed, Nyra moved rapidly to consolidate power and promote her agenda. With potential rivals culled, none dared openly challenge Project Ascension or the growing authority it granted her personal forces.

The Congress and Federation fleets were gradually reliablitied with those loyal to Nyra's visions. She created the Office of Societal Cohesion to root out any remaining pockets of sedition, helmed by hunter-killer AI implants she had the Ascension artifacts create. No conspiracy could ferment under such scrutiny.

Of course, Ascension technology applications were still limited by current science. But Nyra was committed to funding the secret Akritiri research colony where scientists labored to decipher its mysteries. The continued headaches and visions were merely the price of transcendence.

With the Federation brought firmly to heel, Nyra turned her gaze to Beyond. Scattered colonies, lawless black markets, uncontacted civilizations - there was so much potential if grasped tightly. The frontier would be the proving ground of her new order.

Billions more lives would soon know the Federation's strengths under her vision. She would burn away the rot and corruption undermining their civilization's destiny. A unified galaxy awaited, by force if needed. None could afford mercy in times demanding impossible sacrifice.

And unknown to all, Project Ascension's probes detected dimensional anomalies allowing glimpses into strange alternate timelines and realities. Perhaps in time the technology could pierce the boundaries fully, opening new frontiers of exploration and conquest...

So Nyra labored on, transcending day by day as the artifacts recast her mind and body into an instrument of unyielding purpose. She prayed that Jason and the others might see one day the necessity of her stern measures.

But gradual estrangement from old comrades was perhaps unavoidable. Power unfettered by doubt demanded adamantine will. Nyra accepted this burden readily to shield the Federation from its own frailty.

The only lingering regret was Lakri, who she had been forced to imprison as a gesture of strength when he protested her methods. She still thought of him fondly, but too much now stood between them. Her humanity was the price of safeguarding civilizations yet unborn.

On the horizon, challenges loomed that would require the Federation's full might to weather intact. Project Ascension had birthed a living weapon able to meet them - Nyra herself, elevanted beyond conscience's constraints. Within her will lay destiny. She would see their civilization transcend or be damned for the attempt.

So the years stretched on, her vision bringing order to ever more distant stars under Ascension's growing might. But on long nights when sleep escaped her, Nyra wondered what concepts like friendship or peace meant to one remade for endless war. Did salvation without mercy satisfy any soul?

She privately hoped Jason had escaped somehow before everything collapsed into chaos and retaliation. Her old friend deserved a kinder fate than to see his ideals die, unmourned and alone. Between what had been and what must be, understanding parted ways.

Perhaps someday, they would meet again at the end of all struggles and comprehend one another once more. But sentiments were luxuries of the untested. And history made hard taskmasters of them all.

So Nyra focused on the endless tasks ahead. Through her force of will, the Federation would achieve its destiny. Alone she must bear the mantle of responsibility now, unflinching against the night. The coming years would judge her stern but necessary resolve.
