Chapter 3 - Troubled Waters

The city's nocturnal symphony was a haunting backdrop to the storm brewing within those walls.

'They always fight like this, but Mom loves my siblings more... They could reconcile momentarily because they work together to save the city.'

Inside the sanctuary of her room, Lucienna leaned against the door, her heart pounding as the echoes of the heated confrontation reverberated in her ears. The room, adorned with shelves filled with books on medicine and the supernatural, offered no comfort to the chaos outside.

'I've always tried my best. But was it my fault that I didn't have supernatural powers like my brothers? I was already twenty yesterday, but Mom even forgot to greet me. It's great that Dad still remembered, and he gave me another set of Medical books.'

She took a deep breath, attempting to steady her racing thoughts. Her brother's intervention had provided her with a momentary escape, but it couldn't shield her from the questions that gnawed at her mind. The weight of her mother's words lingered heavily in her heart, questioning her place in the world, her purpose, and her existence.

'Am I not seeking a purpose for myself? I've studied hard and learned medical skills from a master at a young age. But even when I'm working to save lives, I still feel like I am not enough.'

While she excelled academically and had a natural talent for healing, she couldn't escape the truth that she was indeed different, and her mother's disappointment only magnified that fact. She was torn between her duty to her family and her calling to help those in need as a healer of the common people.

'Or maybe because these are secrets only I know of, and I delayed myself in their eyes.' Her thoughts drifted to her life as a ghost doctor. 'I never dared to tell them.'

As the night wore on, the city outside continued its restless slumber. Lucienna's room was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by the soft glow of a few carefully placed electric candles. She turned to her collection of mystical texts, her safe haven within a cover, searching for comfort in the ancient wisdom contained within their pages.

'They say superpowers can still be activated by finding a noble person to help. Should I find one for myself?'

Hours passed, and the tensions in the household gradually subsided. Lucienna knew that she couldn't stay locked in her room forever. She needed to find a way to bridge the gap between her family's expectations and her own destiny.

'I really need to develop the superhero genes within me.'

In the soft morning light, Lucienna embarked on her daily journey to school, flanked by three of her family's loyal guards. Their imposing presence, dressed in impeccably tailored suits, seemed to cast an aura of protection around her as the sleek, black luxury car came to a regal halt at the wrought-iron gates of the prestigious academy.

The grandeur of the institution was tangible, with wealthy architecture that whispered tales of generations of elite students who had graced its halls. 'I hate the feeling of being guarded, but this time, I can no longer go out without guards strictly following me. I used to be free before, but I could no longer protest for freedom right now.'

Upon reaching the hallowed halls of the academy, Lucienna's footsteps echoed through the marble corridors, finally leading her to the office of her homeroom teacher. The room was a cloister of order and education, with neatly arranged books and an impressive array of academic awards on display.

"Good morning, Ms. Tereza," Lucienna greeted respectfully, her voice carrying a note of deference.

Ms. Tereza, an educator of considerable authority, fixed her with a stern gaze. "You have consistently maintained your status as an honor student, poised to graduate this year," she acknowledged. "Yet, last year, when your other teachers chose to overlook certain indiscretions, I could not. I abhor the sight of top students engaging in bad and undisciplined behavior."

With deliberate care, Lucienna withdrew two documents from her bag, the doctor's certificate, and the employee's ID, and offered them to Ms. Tereza. The teacher's surprise was discernible as she examined the documents. "You..."

"Teacher, I hold you in high regard," Lucienna admitted. "I hope my parents remain unaware of this. My work is of major importance, and I trust that you can help safeguard my secret identity."

Ms. Tereza's curiosity deepened. "Did other teachers also become privy to this?"

Lucienna nodded, her eyes locking with the teacher's gaze. "Even the principal and the director are aware of my confidential occupation."

A heavy sigh escaped Ms. Tereza as she absorbed this consequential revelation. "But why keep it a secret from your own family?"

"My mother would disapprove of my involvement in such precarious endeavors, like saving lives," Lucienna explained, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness.

The teacher's concern was evident as she spoke. "Your mother likely has your best interests at heart. Society is facing troubling times."

Lucienna couldn't help but chuckle softly, her gaze dropping as Ms. Tereza urged her to return to class. The secrets that bound her, the duty that called her, it was a delicate balance she treads between the world of privilege and the world of shadows, where her true purpose lay.

'I have a feeling that I still can't stay long in school today. I must as well ask the teacher for a sick leave.'

As the school day progressed, Lucienna found herself walking a shaky tightrope between her life as a top student and her secret identity as a ghost doctor. She had managed to elude trouble thus far, but halfway through the day, her carefully crafted facade was at risk.

'Trouble really knocks on my door whenever I want to attend school, honestly.'

Her phone buzzed insistently, and she hurriedly retrieved it from her bag, noting the caller's name on the screen, 'Doctor Sparks.'

A sense of urgency gripped her as she answered, "Good morning, Doctor Sparks! How may I be of help?"

"Doctor Cien, where are you?"

Lucienna rushed to the parking lot, where a seemingly private car owned by one of the staff was actually hers and parked at her disposal. She knew her bodyguards only had permission to drop her and get her from school. They could not stay long inside the academy.

"I'm almost at the hospital, Doctor Sparks," Lucienna replied with a lie, her voice tinged with concern. "How's the patient?"

"The Director is advising surgery for the patient," Doctor Sparks explained, frustration lacing his tone. "But Doctor Evilon hasn't arrived yet. That man must have been partying last night and wasn't expecting an emergency today."

Lucienna's brow furrowed in worry. "Will the Director ask me to assist him in the surgery?"

Doctor Sparks hesitated for a moment before responding, "He might ask you to calm the patient rather than assist during surgery."
