Chapter 21 - Too Much

[Ed's POV]

"Another round!" Viktor raised his glass to let the bartender know. She quickly obliged and generously filled our glasses. Viktor, Valeria, Lyra, and I clinked our glasses in unison.

"To the success of this unlikely alliance!" I toasted, a small grin breaking into my face.

"So how do you and Valeria know each other, Viktor?" I asked, curious to know how their friendship had blossomed.

"Oh, Valeria and I go way back! It was during the time I was a young'un and new to adventuring, and I met her during a joint quest in one of the other parties." Viktor took a large sip from his glass and continued.

"It was a massive subjugation mission for a horde of monstrous creatures that had gathered deep within the labyrinthine depths. We had a grand assembly of about thirty to forty adventurers on that expedition, each with their own ambitions and bravado." Viktor's voice held a note of fond nostalgia, and I found myself captivated by his storytelling.

Valeria, who had become increasingly tipsy, leaned against me, her eyes half-lidded but attentive.

"Oh, you see," Viktor continued, his tone growing more animated, "the thing that made that journey truly unforgettable was the fact that Valeria and I were tasked with holding the rear vanguard. Picture this: relentless surprise attacks, fierce battles in close quarters, and Valeria—" he paused dramatically, raising his glass towards her, "Valeria cutting through those abominations as if they were mere twigs!"

A ripple of laughter escaped me as I imagined the scene he described. Valeria's eyes lit up with a mix of pride and a playful spark.

"Yeah, yeah! I was on fire that day," Valeria slurred with a grin, a hearty laugh bubbling forth from her.

Viktor joined in her laughter, his deep voice mingling with hers in the chorus of shared memories. "And me? I just stood there, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, watching her work her magic."

Their camaraderie was infectious, and I found myself caught up in the warm atmosphere of their shared past. It was a tale of valor, unexpected friendship, and the bonds formed through the crucible of battle.

Lyra was in on the fun too, laughing along and telling her own tales. What stood out to me was the fact that all these people have done so much in their lives, while I was stuck in a good-for-nothing castle for nineteen years and did NOTHING.

Viktor's laugh was all-consuming, turning the heads of all the other patrons seated in the bar, who were also noticing the infectiously happy atmosphere.

Valeria suddenly started talking into my ear. "Ed," she whispered, her warm breath sending shivers down my spine, "have you ever been on an adventure? Really felt the thrill of the unknown?"

I turned to her, meeting her gaze. Her eyes were sparkling, and her lips curled into a playful smile. The soft glow of the tavern's dim lighting danced upon her features, casting a bewitching allure that made it hard to look away.

"Actually, I haven't." I confessed, my voice just above a whisper, the confession feeling oddly vulnerable. "I've spent most of my life confined to the castle, sheltered from the outside world."

Valeria's fingers grazed my hand, sending a jolt of electricity through me. "Well then, Ed, maybe it's time to change that."

Before I could respond, the music in the tavern shifted, the tempo becoming slower and more sensual. Couples on the dance floor began to sway in time to the music, their bodies moving in a sensual rhythm.

Valeria's gaze held mine as she stood up, her hand extended towards me. "Care to dance, Ed?"

Without a second thought, I took her hand, letting her lead me onto the dance floor. The air seemed to thicken around us as we moved together, our bodies in sync with the melody. Valeria's movements were fluid and graceful, her proximity sending my heart racing.

As we danced, her fingers trailed along my arm, leaving a trail of fire in their wake. The world around us faded into a blur, and it was as if we were the only two people in the room. Her eyes held a mixture of intensity and longing, a silent invitation that was impossible to resist.

The distance between us closed, and as our bodies pressed together, the heat between us was undeniable. We locked eyes, and the air crackled like electricity with tension. Valeria's lips were mere inches away, and I could feel her breath mingling with mine.

As the music reached its crescendo, Valeria spun away from me, her long hair spinning like a golden halo around her. In one fluid motion, she returned to my embrace, her body pressing against mine in a way that sent shivers down my spine.

"Ed," she murmured, her voice husky and filled with desire.

"Yeah?" I asked, my voice echoing throughout my head.

"Ed," she whispered, her voice a seductive melody in my ear. "Let go of everything. Tonight, you're going to be free."

Her words ignited something within me. In that moment, I made a choice—a choice to embrace the thrill that Valeria offered, to step out of my comfort zone and into the whirlwind of possibilities and what-ifs.

As the music transitioned once again, the tempo becoming even more intense, Valeria's movements grew bolder, her body swaying with an enticing rhythm. I followed her lead, feeling a surge of exhilaration coursing through me. The tavern seemed to spin around us.

I stumbled slightly, my steps becoming less steady as I tried to keep up with Valeria's movements. She noticed my faltering and cast me a concerned glance, her smile fading.

"Ed, are you alright?" she asked, her voice a mixture of worry and genuine care.

"I... I think I might have had a bit too much to drink," I admitted, my words slurring slightly. I then remembered that this is my second time ever drinking. I didn't want to admit that to anyone around here for the sake of not getting embarrassed, and I think I went way over my limit.

Valeria's expression softened, and she gently placed a hand on my arm. "Come on, let's get you somewhere more comfortable."
