Chapter 5 - A Butler's Duty

The blaring alarm jolted me awake, and I glanced at the time, realizing it was 6 am. It was earlier than my usual waking hour, but proceeded to get ready for school nonetheless. I didn't want to linger at home, not after last night's tense conversation with my parents. I decided to keep the topic on hold until the upcoming parent meeting next week. At least I had informed them about it, so they couldn't be upset with me for withholding information.

Putting on my clothes and grabbing my school bag, I left my room. I had no appetite for breakfast today, so I chose to skip it. As I was preparing to leave, I noticed my dad passing by the entrance door. He asked if I wanted breakfast, and in an effort to avoid a lecture about the importance of starting the day with a meal, I replied that I would be running late and intended to buy something on my way to school. It was a white lie, but it saved me from further discussions. He nodded understandingly, and I exited, closing the door behind me.

On my way to school, I noticed a group of people gathered in front of a convenience store. Impulsively, I walked in and bought a sandwich. As I saw it, a butler's duty is to follow their master's wishes, and in this instance, my dad wished for me to have breakfast today. Adhering to this simple rule was essential if I aspired to become a good butler. I realized that I needed to set aside my personal feelings and prioritize my master's orders, in this case, my parents' wishes. Deep in my thought about the concept of masters and what qualifies someone as such, I reached the cashier to pay for the sandwich.

"That will be 9 dollars," the cashier said.

I paid and left the store, heading straight to school without any interruptions along the way. The weather was pleasant, striking the perfect balance between not being too hot or too cold. It made for an enjoyable walk to school, and surprisingly, there were not many people around, probably due to the early hour.

Arriving at school, I headed to my locker, stored my bag, and then proceeded to my first-period class, which was math. The classroom was empty, providing the perfect opportunity to peacefully enjoy my sandwich. I ate while waiting for others to arrive, savoring the moment of tranquility before the bustling school day began.
