Chapter 18 - Vacation (1)

After the family meeting Simon needed to calm down for a moment. Many things in the last few months happened and he somehow felt like he needed a break. His emotions and creative thoughts seemed out of order.

He spent one last day explaining everything Caroline needed for the founding of Red Bull and transferred her the investment funds. After having a final meeting with Deenis and Tanja at the Atari production plant he got the newest information. After their recent investment in employees and production quipment Atari was now able to produce roughly 6000 arcade machines per month, if they worked in three shifts and during some weekends. When counting with 25 days per month and 22,5 hours per day, this would be equal to roughly 10-11 arcade machines per hour.

Of course Simon asked them to further strengthen the supply chains and increase the production capacity. By the time Tetris was ready for the market they would need to be able to produce at least somewhere between 15000-20000 arcade machines per month to cover the United States, Europe and Japan. When their production capacity increased, their product cost per arcade machine would sink because of the lower supply costs. Atari would be able to earn roughly 2000 dollars per arcade machine, therefore having a monthly profit of somewhere between 30-40 million US dollars, which results in a yearly profit of 360-480 million US dollars.

To give a little comparison just how insane this number would be for a newly founded company, here is a small comparison with General Motors, one of the largest companies of the United States. In 1970 General Motors witnessed a very large strike.

Because of that strike, sales were down to $18.8‐billion in 1970 and net income was only $609‐million, or $2.09 a share.

Simon therefere would have created a company that already had 60-70% of the profits of General Motors with potential to further increase in the future with only a few games, after only one year.

This would make Simon Smith a future star of the American dream and the Smith family would need to deal with the claws of Wall Street. This led to the fact that Caroline would have to create Red Bull within the next year and bring a product to the market in order to draw the attention of the world from Atari to Red Bull. This would not only increase the valuation of Red Bull but bring insane marketing to the new food and beverage company.

After finishing the meeting with his sister and the company management of Atari he decided to take a vacation. He hired some additional bodyguards and invited Sarah Harisson, a smart and beautiful blond girl he met during his celebration party, to take a short vacation for him. The smart 18 year old girl from New York happily agreed after she learned they were going to take a private jet with bodyguards and Simon would pay for everything.

Her parents of course had no objection after learning that their daughter would take a vacation with Simon Smith, the new star of hope and well known entrepreneur of New York. They knew Simon's parents very well and were sure their safety was absolutely guaranteed.

Luckily for Simon there was currently an event ongoing in which he was extremely interested in. The 1970 FIFA World Cup was the ninth edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football championship for men's senior national teams. Held from 31 May to 21 June in Mexico, it was the first World Cup tournament held outside Europe and South America, and it was also the first held in North America. The FIFA World Cup 1970 was the first World Cup ever broadcast on television in color.

It's been called the greatest World Cup ever because of Brazil's golden team and Pele's last appearance in the tournament.

Simon and Sarah didn't have any interest in the upcoming semi-finals and only wanted to watch the finals. With some family connections Simon secured them one of the most luxurious hotel rooms in Mexico City. They attended the final on Sunday, 21 June, in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, to determine the winner of the 1970 FIFA World Cup.

In the final, Brazil opened the scoring when Pelé headed in a cross from Rivellino in the 18th minute, but Roberto Boninsegna equalized for Italy after a series of blunders in the Brazilian defense. The match remained level until the 65th minute when a powerful shot from Gérson restored the Brazilians' lead. Further goals from Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto rewarded Brazil's attacking play and secured a 4–1 victory and a record third World Cup triumph, which earned them the right to permanently keep the Jules Rimet Trophy. The golden World Cup trophy was introduced in 1974.

The beautiful atmosphere and the passionate football of the Brazilian national team were really enjoyable for the couple. Of course this experience left the two of them connecting really closely together. After waking up in the hotel room with a beautiful blond American girl, all his sorrows of the last few weeks disappeared and he just felt completely relaxed. But he honestly didn't want to return to New York so soon. This experience reminded him of the two years he traveled across the world and just enjoyed different cities and meeting new people.

Sarah was delighted when she learned that Simon would extend their vacation for another two weeks and would invite her to a large luxury resort in Hawaii. Without wasting too much time in Mexico the young couple took a plane straight to Hawaii, where Simon spent a day resting at the Sheraton hotel on Waikiki Beach. The next day both of them went on a joyful shopping spree across the city. Waikiki in the 70's was truly a fascinating experience.

Waikiki brims with international restaurants — as well as great seafood and steak houses, featuring everything from hamburger to prime rib. But half the fun is learning how to eat what you've ordered when the dining room doesn't provide knives and forks. The atmosphere was international, so they enjoyed each night in the country of their choice — the Philippines, Japan, China, New Zealand, Australia or Tahiti. There was so much to explore and the young couple spent two very relaxing weeks together.
