Chapter 1 - A New Beginning

The curtains fluttered as the wind blew by them, making its way across the room, creeping up the bed, and crawling over Ava as she slept. A sudden chill overtook her whole body as she desperately tried to cover herself more to escape the cold. Ava soon realized she couldn't feel her sheets anywhere, and in a weak attempt to search for them, she opened her eyes and surveyed the room.

The room was small and only held a small desk, bed, stove, and a window. Ava's gaze fell upon her sheets that were lying on the ground. Rolling over to the edge of her bed, Ava stretched for it, but it was Just out of reach; she stretched out more and more suddenly losing balance and face-planted into the floor. As she lay there on the cold floor, she wondered if she would ever catch a break.

The past 3 months had been a struggle. The unfortunate demise of her parents had forced her to leave behind her dreams of being a doctor to find work to sustain herself. Lifting herself up from the floor, she grabbed the sheets beside her and threw them on the bed. She sat on the bed now wide awake, she glanced around the room, searching for her phone and spotted it in the corner of her eye laying on the bed.

She took her it up and checked the time; it was 8:00 a.m., and she had to get to work by 9. She lifted herself up and made her way to the bathroom. It was a tight space barely housing a toilet, sink, and bath; removing her clothes, she stepped into the bath.

Ava stood in the cramped bathroom, the cold tiles sending shivers up her spine as she turned on the shower. She watched the water gradually transition from a chilling trickle to a soothing stream, and as it cascaded over her body, she couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. The warm water was a temporary escape from the harsh realities of her life.

She closed her eyes, allowing the water to wash away the fatigue that clung to her body. It was a meager apartment she called home, but it was all she could afford after her parents' tragic passing. The weight of responsibilities had fallen on her shoulders, and every day was a battle.

As she showered, Ava's mind drifted to her job. It wasn't a glamorous one, but it paid the bills. She worked long hours at a local cafe, serving customers with a smile despite her constant exhaustion. Her coworkers were her new family, offering support and camaraderie in the face of adversity.

Ava finished her shower, dried herself off, and quickly got dressed. She didn't have the luxury of wasting time, and she had to make every minute count. After dressing in her uniform, she moved to the tiny kitchen area and grabbed a granola bar from a small shelf. It would serve as her breakfast on the go.

Grabbing her phone and keys, she rushed out of her apartment, making sure to lock the door behind her. The morning sun was beginning to rise, but Ava's life was far from carefree. She knew that she had to seize the day, work hard, and keep pushing forward to make a better future for herself.

Ava hurried down the busted, dimly lit staircase of her run down apartment building. Each step she creaked loudly beneath her weight, a reminder of the building's deteriorating state. The building was plagued by peeling paint, broken windows, and a pervasive musty odor.

The railing, rusty and unstable, wobbled dangerously as she descended. She had to be careful, for the staircase had seen better days, and its wobbling banter didn't inspire much confidence. Ava was accustomed to the building's shabby conditions, but today she was particularly preoccupied with the thoughts ticking away in her mind.

Her thoughts were consumed by her responsibilities, her future, and the weight of her grief. She barely noticed the flickering overhead lights that barely illuminated her path. The building had its share of issues, and the maintenance was next to non-extant. Cracks ran through the walls, and the ceiling occasionally dripped water from a broken pipe above.

Ava's heart raced as she descended the final flight of stairs and stepped out onto the dimly lit, litter strewn corridor that led to the building's entrance. It was a gloomy morning, and the outside world seemed just as unforgiving as the inside.

As she hurried towards the building's entrance, a sense of unease washed over her. She felt vulnerable, as if the world conspired against her every step. Exiting the building a gut wrenching smell crept into her nose. The neighborhood where she lived was incredibly unclean, unpleasant and known for its rough streets and a rising crime rate, a stark contrast to her dreams of a better life. She tightened her grip on her phone and keys, eager to make it to work unscathed.

As she walked briskly down the dimly lit alleyway, her steps echoed on the cracked pavement. Anxiety clawed at her, and she couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. Her pace quickened, but before she could react, a shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, brandishing a knife. Fear surged through her veins as she realized she was being mugged.

In a desperate bid to defend herself, Ava raised her phone in an attempt to deter her assailant. But it was too late. In the struggle that followed, the attacker's blade found its mark, and Ava's world turned dark as she collapsed to the ground.

Unbeknownst to her, as she lay unconscious, a mysterious force enveloped her. In that fleeting moment between life and death, something extraordinary happened. a feeling she had never experienced before. It was as if the universe had granted her a second chance.

Ava awoke, gasping for breath, but her surroundings had transformed. She felt different, as if she had been reborn with newfound strength and resilience. The scars from her previous life remained, but she was no longer the same person.

Confused and uncertain, Ava slowly got to her feet, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and curiosity. She had a deep-seated feeling that her life was about to change in ways she had never imagined. She was determined to turn the tide and rise above the challenges that had once held her back. Ava was ready to embrace her new life, believing that her extraordinary abilities would be the key to a brighter future.
