The moon hung high in the sky, its soft silver light filtering through the window into Katrin's chamber. She sat on the edge of her bed, her thoughts in turmoil after Ethan's revelation. His words echoed in her mind, each syllable heavy with the weight of their impending fate.
"I can't, I can't do it Ethan. I can't be the one to- to end you," she had sobbed, her heart breaking at the thought of losing him.
Ethan had held her gently, his touch both comforting and tinged with sadness. "You can, Katrin. And you will."
"Because you're strong, and because you care. It's the only way to protect everyone around us."
She had wanted to argue, to find another solution, but deep down, she knew Ethan was right. The danger he was to the world, and the responsibility to prevent the catastrophe weighed heavily on her shoulders.
