Elvira was picking grass blades from the soil growing around the pond. The ground she was sitting on was moist and cold. Leona had left not more than a few minutes ago. She had promised to be careful and not to get herself killed or behind bars in an attempt to help her sister.
A new visitor was coming to see Elvira. It was Eldritch Payne. The informant had told her. Her uncle might have saved her in court by giving false testimony, but she had disappointed him. How would she explain herself to him?
Leona was an easy target. She was young, naïve, and moldable and saw her elder sisters, especially Elvira, as her role model. On the contrary, Eldritch was aged and wise, holding steadfast to his beliefs and principles.
"Can I join you?" Eldritch's voice came from behind.
"Well, of course." Elvira rose from the ground.
"Please, remain seated." Eldritch wouldn't meet her gaze. "We have a lot to talk about."
