The announcer cleared his throat. "Miss Johnson. You can move aside so we can call our next witness."

The spirit moved away from the circle and stood against a wall close to Elvira's cage. Charlotte's flaming red eyes locked on her.

"Why do you look so shocked?" her friend's telepathic voice entered Elvira's mind. "You betrayed our trust, Elvira. I had no choice."

Elvira smirked and gave the spirit access to her conscious thoughts. "I would have given you an explanation if you had come to me first and not testified against me in someone's court who you know wants me dead."
