Suddenly I was there again.
That dreadful night, rolling down the hill with Bella clutched to my chest. I recognized the scene far too well. The rocks tore at my skin, shredding through my clothes as I tumbled over and over again.
Then finally I came to a stop. I lay for a moment panting, trying to understand what I was seeing.
"Mom! Dad! Jadyn!" Cried Bella. She struggled in my arms to escape.
I got up in time to see a terrible sight.
In horror, I watched as the roof and walls of the house caved in. The roof crushed what I knew was my parent's room, burying it in stone. Without question, there would be no survivors.
Jadyn too would be still in the house.
Just like that, half my family was gone. I felt the tears rolling down my cheeks.
"We have to go help!" Bella began to run towards our home.
I jumped forward, grabbing her arm tightly, "We can't help them now," I said as gently as possible.
She looked at me in horror, "No, let me go," she said, pulling, "I want Mom and Dad!"
There was a sound of crunching rocks.
I backed away as we watched Jadyn rise into the air. He bled from a cut on his forehead.
"Jay-"
I covered her mouth, "That's not Jadyn anymore."
She began to sob uncontrollably and I rubbed her back, "We have to go now."
What happened next was supposed to be Bella and I running. Instead, the strange logic of dreams glued me to the spot watching Jadyn. I turned my head and saw myself running with Bella in tow. Jadyn began to cry.
"Mom! Dad! No," He sobbed. "This wasn't supposed to happen, she said I'd get what I want."
He began to search the rubble, flinging rocks aside easily. But even still, for every rock he flung, there was more underneath.
"I command you to move aside," He yelled at the ever-growing pile of our house.
When nothing happened, he collapsed, his body a rag doll on the broken beams. He shook and screamed.
"Preston! It was all Preston's fault." These words startled me. I wanted to deny any truth in them but I couldn't. Then I watched as he levitated high into the air. I saw he was watching me and Bella.
"Bella!" He screamed, "Don't leave me, please don't leave me, I need you, please!"
Bella didn't turn around, we were too far away, out of earshot of his sobs.
He fell back to the ground, kicking a rock out of the way, "He took her away from me, he always takes everything! He's always in my way"
His face screwed up in concentration.
I watched his eye begin to glow brighter and brighter, "YOU CAN RUN! YOU CAN HIDE! BUT I WILL FIND YOU," He screamed with such volume the rubble shook, and then he sat down in defeat. "For Bella," he muttered. "All for Bella."
Then I watched him curl up and cry.
In the distance, young Preston looked up and scowled, towing away Bella. She turned and cast her gaze back on her one true home.
