Sovanna's P.O.V
With a final surge of determination, I powered through the last few questions, my hand a blur of motion. As I approached the end of the exam, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. I had done it. I had faced the challenge head-on and conquered it. Now to wait and see if I passed.
Reluctantly, I handed in my paper and stepped out of the exam room, the weight of the past hours slowly lifting. The cool air of the surface greeted me, a stark contrast to the stuffy intensity of the exam hall. I took a deep breath, relishing in the feeling of freedom.
Days turned into weeks, and the anticipation of the results gnawed at me. The wait was agonizing, each passing moment filled with hope and anxiety until finally, the day arrived when the list of successful candidates was posted.
I held my breath as I scanned the names, my heart pounding in my chest. And there it was, my name, amidst the sea of others. A rush of emotions swept over me - relief, joy, gratitude. I had earned my place in the Surface Exploration Program. Cool hot tears drip from my eyes and like many others who either made or didn't I cried.
With a newfound sense of purpose, I packed my belongings, ready to leave the familiar underground world behind. Mr. Luke's belief in me had not been in vain. He'd always told me to kept my head down and I'll be rewarded. I was indeed rewarded.
A day after the results of the exam, a letter addressed to me from the Earth Restoration and Habitation Administration, the organization running the Surface Exploration program told me about my official acceptance into the program.
I still had to go through another month of tests and training to prepare me fully for the mission but I was just so happy to finally be on the path to making my dreams a reality.
The door nob is opened and I jump up to meet my adoptive father Mr. Luke. He looks tired and drained but upon seeing me holding a letter his face lights up.
"Sovanna, you made it!" He says this as a huge smile graces his lips as he hugs and kisses me. I read the contents with him and he smiles.
"Are you happy?" He asks suddenly, bringing confusion to my features.
"What do you mean? Of course I'm happy!" I say a smile of happiness gracing my lips, but this however doesn't seemed to satisfy him.
"Sovanna, I've watched you be so engrossed in work that you forgot to eat, I've seen your tears even though you've tried to hide them from me. For the whole of three years you never made a single friend." He says a look of sadness crossing his face as he speaks. I look down, biting my lips and playing with my fingers.
"I just wanted to make it. Not only for my self but for you, to be proud of me." I reply a small smile replacing the frown that had formed.
He sighs and gathers me into a hug squeezing me tight.
"I didn't adopt you only for you smarts, Sovanna. You were the only child playing alone. I also knew your parents." At the revelation I pull away from him shocked.
"You knew my parents?" I ask not believing my ears. I'd always thought he'd adopted me for my ability and potential.
Mr. Luke's revelation left me stunned. I had always believed that my adoption was primarily based on my aptitude for science, never suspecting there was a deeper connection. My heart raced with a mixture of shock, curiosity, and a strange sense of comfort knowing that he had known my parents.
"Yes," he continued, his gaze steady, "I knew them. Your parents were extraordinary scientists, much like you. They were pioneers in the field of astrophysics, and they dreamed of exploring the mysteries of the universe. They believed in pushing the boundaries of human knowledge."
His words hung in the air, a bridge connecting my past to my present. The weight of their legacy settled on my shoulders, mingling with the realization that my adoptive father had known them intimately.
"But," he continued, his voice gentle, "they faced challenges, Sovanna. The pursuit of knowledge can be a double-edged sword. They dedicated themselves so completely to their work that they lost sight of the world around them. It cost them their lives."
Tears welled up in my eyes, a mixture of sorrow for the parents I had never known and gratitude for the man who had taken me in, knowing the weight of my legacy.
"I adopted you because I saw in you the same fire, the same passion for understanding the cosmos. But I also wanted to make sure you didn't walk the same path as your parents. You're brilliant, Sovanna, but you're more than that. You're capable of balance, of forging connections with others, and of finding joy beyond the confines of your research."
His words resonated within me, a revelation that went far beyond my acceptance into the Surface Exploration Program. I wasn't just carrying on my parents' scientific legacy; I was forging my own path, one that embraced both the pursuit of knowledge and the richness of human connections.
In that moment, as Mr. Luke held me close, I felt a profound sense of gratitude and a newfound understanding of my own worth. I wasn't defined solely by my intellect, but by the capacity for love, for relationships, and for a life beyond the confines of a lab.
As we stood there, embraced by the weight of our shared history and the promise of a future filled with both discovery and connection, I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
"Now let's get you packing," He says getting up and going to get the suitcase I'd be using.
I nodded, a mixture of emotions swirling within me. The reality of the upcoming journey was sinking in, and the need to prepare for it was both exciting and daunting. As Mr. Luke retrieved the suitcase, I stood up, ready to face the task at hand.
Together, we went through the checklist of essential items: durable clothing suitable for training courses , my communication devices, and the necessary supplies for sustenance during our training period. Each item was carefully selected and packed with precision.
As we worked, the room filled with a sense of purpose and anticipation. This suitcase, now brimming with the tools of my future endeavors, represented the tangible culmination of years of dreams and aspirations.
Mr. Luke's presence was a steady comfort, his guidance and support a testament to the depth of our connection. He moved with a quiet efficiency, his experience evident in the way he organized and prioritized each item.
"Remember to double-check the power cells for your equipment," he reminded me, a hint of concern in his eyes. "And make sure you have your personal items, too. They may seem small, but they hold sentimental value." I nodded, grateful for his attention to detail. He was like a father making sure his daughter had everything she needed to be going away. Every piece of advice he offered was a testament to his love and care for me. In those moments, as we prepared for the journey ahead, I felt a profound gratitude for the man who had not only believed in my potential, but had nurtured it with unwavering support. He wasn't like a father I realized; he is my father.
With the suitcase finally packed, I stood back to survey the contents. It was a tangible representation of the adventure that awaited me, a symbol of the incredible journey that lay ahead. I knew that every item within it would play a vital role in my success and survival on the surface.
"Thank you, Dad," I said, my voice filled with emotion. "I wouldn't be here without you."
He smiled warmly, his eyes reflecting a mixture of pride, love and shock. This was the first time I'd acknowledged him as my father and referred to him as such. "You've earned every bit of this, Sovanna. Now, go out there and make the universe proud."
With those words echoing in my heart, I carried the suitcase, ready to embark on the next chapter of my extraordinary journey.
