Chapter 3 - Mercenary system

"W-why would her majesty care about this trash?"

The blonde haired lady asked in shock.

"I have no idea either... And we are instructed not to scan him"

The black haired man replied, as he unchained Jayden's arms.

"D-does that mean he's special?"

The blonde haired lady asked grimly.

"Once again, I have no idea. But what I do know is... You have made a big mistake by torturing the innocent man till he confessed to a crime he didn't commit"

The black haired man said with a smirk, as he bundled Jayden's unconscious body on his shoulder, and walked out.

-

[Hey! Don't you think you've slept enough.]

Jayden got startled awake by an alluring feminine voice, and quickly shot up from the bed he was laid on while scanning his location cautiously.

[It's me! Your lazy parasite! I upgraded a little.]

"Seriously? By using me as bait!"

Jayden voiced out in displeasure.

[It's the price you had to pay in order to gain abilities from me.]

"How did you even hack the stronghold system?"

Jayden asked in surprise.

[It's no big deal. You would be able to do the same in a breeze soon.]

"It's no big deal? But you were traced down my lodge"

Jayden said with a scoff.

[That's because I was weakened. Now I'm a little stronger, I can do it with ease. In fact, I'm actually siphoning this stronghold energy right now, to further strengthen myself.]

"Whatever you're doing, I want nothing to do with it"

[Sure about that? I've got the abilities you've been craving for.]

"Really? What kind of ability?"

Jayden asked in anticipation.

[First thing first. Introduction.]

[You should address as Mia from now on, not system. And I am an embodiment of everything a mercenary would ever be needing for a mission. Ammunitions, explosives, transport, food supplies, drugs, clothing, and miscellaneous equipments. You would be able to summon them out of thin air, and the most interesting part is that it doesn't make use of your soul force like magic, I'll pay all the price!!]

"... Are you kidding me right now?"

Jayden asked unconvinced.

[Of course not! I've added a real weapon to your collection, try summoning a real pistol.]

"Okay..."

Jayden replied and willed for a pistol, and a black Glock19 pistol suddenly materialized in his hand.

"Cool! But I'm trying to summon a sniper rifle and nothing is happening"

Jayden said in confusion.

[What makes you think I'll give you them all for free? You'll have to work for them.]

"How?"

Jayden asked in confusion.

[I'll be training you on how to be a godly mercenary. With each successful training, I'll give points depending on your performance. And you could use those points to purchase from the shop I provided for you. Tap your left wrist.]

Jayden tapped his left wrist, and a transparent screen suddenly appeared in his line of sight.

"Woah!!"

Jayden voiced out in shock, as he scanned the contents of the screen.

"System being? You're not an AI?"

Jayden quickly understood what the note meant.

[Of course I'm not!... I'm actually a fallen celestial being.]

"Celestial being?! Who did this to you?"

Jayden asked in shock.

[That's none of your business.]

"Okay, don't suck up to me later..."

Jayden replied, and began browsing the shop option.

The more he scrolled, the lower his jaw fell. Everything that would ever be needed by a mercenary was really there. There were even cargo ships and planes!

"You know I always loved you, right?"

Jayden commented with a wide smile.

[Whatever... But I must warn you, always keep your identity hidden in-game when you're using your abilities.]

[You have obtained a 'Ski mask']

"Sure, but why?"

Jayden asked curiously.

[You'll know soon enough.]

/Knock! knock! knock!/

Jayden got startled by a series of knocks on the steel door which led outside the unknown apartment he found himself in.

He quickly unsummoned his pistol which he was still fiddling with, and slowly walked up to the fine steel door.

"W-who's there?"

Jayden stammered, as he wasn't sure if he was still in the custody of the EAGLE squad.

"Hi! Could you please open the door?"

Jayden heard a familiar voice which made his heart sink, and shakily unbolted the steel door

"Good afternoon! I brought you this... all the way from B district, but it was worth it. Can I come in?"

The blonde haired lady from earlier who had tortured Jayden mercilessly, said with a friendly smile, while gesturing to the small cooler she came along with.

"D-do you have to ask? I actually find this kind of interrogation approach creepy"

Jayden said with an awkward chuckle, as he stepped aside for the blonde haired lady to step in.

"Oh please, let's leave those memories behind and cherish the ones to come. I'm not here as an interrogator, but as an acquaintance"

The blonde haired lady said an adorable smile, as she stepped in.

[Shameless...]

'Could you explain to me what's going on?'

Jayden thought to Mia, as he closed the door.

[You are no longer detained by the authorities, and actually got promoted to D3 district.]

'W-what? Why?'

Jayden asked in confusion, as he walked behind the blonde haired lady, to the dining table.

[The 'AI' you chatted with in-game, testified for your innocence without being asked. And that has never been done before, so they think you're special.]

'But she said she had nothing to do with my kind, why then did she help me?'

Jayden asked curiously.

[No more questions! Focus on your date.]

"You know, I'm really sorry for the first impression I gave you. I was just not in a good mood"

The blonde haired lady said apologetically, and began unpacking the contents of her cooler which were top tier delicacies with mouth watering aromata.

"That's okay, everyone have bad days"

Jayden replied with a smile.

He was confident now he knew he was free, and would use every slight opportunity to take advantage of his 'being special' case.

"Thanks for understanding me. Let's have lunch together, shall we?"
