Lucien stared at his wife unable to comprehend what she had just said to her. He thought she loved him. He thought he had her whole heart and undying devotion and nothing could change that. Something had. What had?
He had always known that it would take failing her greatly to make her want out. He had thought they had been together forever. What was going on?
He knew that she was hurt but how could that stop her from loving him? Had he underestimated how badly hiding things from her could hurt her?
No, he thought, she loved him too much to actually divorce him. This was a game. Yes. This made more sense. She didn't really want to leave him. She was playing mind games with him.
"Is this a game?" he asked her.
He was sure it was but he wanted to make sure. There was no need for games they could talk like adults. He was going to lead this conversation and hope she took his lead.
"No," Star said flatly.
