Chapter 23 - Cook-off!

Weeks after her first group project, on an early Saturday noon, the cooking class held its first-ever cook-off! for the first year.

The excitement in the air was palpable as the students bustled about the cooking classroom, setting up their stations and donning their aprons. It was an event that had been eagerly anticipated, and Nao was no exception.

Each student had to form teams of three, and as Nao scanned the room, she couldn't help but wonder who she'd partner with. She hoped it would be Yumi and Kuro, as they were her friends, and they worked well together in the past. Most importantly, they're fine cooks.

The teacher, Mrs. Tanaka, clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright, everyone! I hope you're as excited as I am for our cooking class's first cook-off. Remember, this is all about teamwork, creativity, and of course, making something delicious! " She said, gathering the student's attention.

"The theme for the cook-off is Japanese cuisine. You're tasked with creating an authentic Japanese dish that would impress the judges." She explained calmly, pointing at the prepared ingredients on one of the counters.

While Nao's mind raced with ideas, the teacher started to write the groups on the blackboard. Seeing it, she exchanged excited glances with Yumi and Aki, who were indeed her partners for the event.

Nao ran towards where the two of them waited for her, waving, "I'm so glad we're on the same team, Yumi! " She exclaimed in joy, her hearty smile spread from ear to ear.

"Woah!? Did you miss me, Nao? " Yumi asked, her eyeballs widened at the girl's sudden hug.

The girl in question — Nao couldn't help but giggle at her, "Hehe, it's been a while since we talked..." She replied.

Noticing the close space between Yumi and Aki, Nao's eyes widened, "Oh! When did you two get close? I haven't seen you together before. " She reacted her mouth agape in disbelief.

"Is it really surprising? " Aki replied.

"Well, I don't blame her~ we're like polar opposites! But though I said that it's not so surprising, after all, I already know Kuro! " Yumi added.

Aki tilted his head in confusion at the sudden name, "Kuro...? " He asked.

"Yeah, Kuro! You guys are almost like carbon copies of each other! " She exclaimed.

Aki smiled at her enthusiasm, "Hmm, he sounds like a fun guy. " He mused.

"You guys get along well~ " Nao chipped in, upon seeing their exchange.

"Well, putting that aside for now, let's focus on this cook-off. " Aki let out.

The cooking class buzzed with activity as students began selecting their ingredients and discussing their dishes. Nao's team decided to prepare a mouthwatering bowl of ramen, with each member taking on specific roles – Yumi focused on the broth, Aki on the toppings, and Nao on the noodles.

The clock started ticking, and the teams were immersed in their culinary creations. The aromas of various ingredients filled the room as students chopped, simmered, and sautéed their way to culinary perfection.

Nao's team worked seamlessly together, each member contributing their skills and ideas. The classroom was a flurry of activity, with other teams working on dishes like sushi, tempura, and teriyaki chicken.

As the competition progressed, Nao's initial nervousness gave way to confidence. She was surrounded by friends, and her passion for cooking shone through at every step. Their ramen broth was rich and flavorful, the toppings colorful and fresh, and the noodles cooked to perfection.

Finally, the time came for the judging. A panel of teachers and guest judges sampled each dish, evaluating them on taste, presentation, and creativity. Nao's heart raced as she watched the judges taste their ramen.

Mrs. Tanaka announced the winners. The first place went to Nao's team, and the excitement was beyond words. They had not only won but had also created a delicious bowl of ramen they could be proud of.

The cook-off had not only been a chance to showcase their cooking skills but also a bonding experience for Nao and her friends. It was a day filled with delicious food, teamwork, and the joy of culinary success. As they celebrated their victory, Nao couldn't help but look forward to more culinary adventures in the school's cooking class.
