Chapter 1 - Dark and Stinky

It was really dark. The kind of dark you could feel. It seemed to choke the air, suffocating me. When was the last time I'd seen light? Nature? I don't remember. Most of my life has been spent sitting in this dark, damp room that smells of death with other people like me. I was born with the ability to control fire, so I was almost immediately chucked into this hellhole a the first signs of my power showing up. These stupid chains restricted my ability to wield fire, so I was stuck there, basically a normal human being. But man, I sure wasn't treated like one. The guards at this place treat everyone like things - not even animals. I think they're afraid of us, and they know they're weak, so they try to humiliate us to make themselves feel better. Pathetic.

What month is it? What year? What day of the week? I think it was an endless cycle of Mondays. Dreary, miserable Mondays.  Suddenly, the door bangs open and the clopping of a guard's steel - toed boots echoed in the dark. There was a scuffling sound that was followed by a soft whimper. That whimper became a sobbing cry as that person was dragged out of the room. Then silence reigned once again. I know from being here enough that the person who just got taken out wasn't ever coming back. I shifted in the dark, holding back a grunt of pain as the wounds I had stretched. It hurt. I hurt. All over. A lot. The chains around my ankles and wrists bit in, and I didn't have to see it to know I was bleeding and raw.

The door banged open again, a rare occurrence. Usually, the door opened only once in a blue moon. But the guard's shuffling feet advanced closer to me, and nervousness shot through my body. People groaned as they were stepped on, but the guard seemed like that could care less. Someone near me screamed in pain as something cracked loudly. The sound sent chills down my spine. Suddenly, a rough hand grabbed me and hauled me to my feet. I felt the chains falling off my wrists and ankles, and a wave of relief surged through me. It was quickly replaced with fear as the iron grip took my arm in its grasp as started half-pulling, half-dragging me toward the door. I stumbled over so many people, some of them gripping at my legs as if they wanted to go with me.

But then I was whisked through the doorway into blinding light, and everything else disappeared.
