Chapter 22 - Chapter 20: Unleashing the Ancient Enigma

The chest sat there, adorned with countless seals and symbols that exuded an air of ancient enigma. The echoing aftermath of the explosion still lingered in the cavern. I could hardly believe that the chaos we'd unleashed had revealed this mysterious chest, bearing an intricate web of enchantments. Dr. Elora immediately began writing notes in her journal as Lulith, Era, and I began to hover around the chest. My heart was pounding with excitement at the allure of this new discovery, and sweat formed on my hands as I slowly brought them closer to the chest. Dr. Elora spoke up, "Wait, kid, what if there is something dangerous inside?"

Her cautionary words echoed through the cavern, causing me to hesitate for a moment. She was right, and in my zealous curiosity, I almost forgot that we had just faced an enigmatic, self-destructing specter. My desire to explore the chest's secrets was palpable, but I realized that patience was vital. This chest could potentially house untold mysteries, magical items, or even perilous traps. I asked, "What do you suggest, then?" Dr. Elora proposed, "Let me at least see what we are dealing with here. I have studied many ancient relics and seals before." She scanned the seals on the chest, comparing them with some of her previous notes. She then put her pencil to her mouth and said, "How peculiar. I have never seen such seals before. These seals are ancient, perhaps they were made centuries ago."

I smiled wryly and inquired, "I kind of figured. How should we open this thing?" Dr. Elora explained, "Normally, I assume seals like this block magic from the inside, but they should come off by simply ripping them from the outside. I think the rune you destroyed was the magic they entrusted to keep this chest locked away." Era extended her hands, her palms glowing with green magical life energy. She frowned, "Lucius, I sense something." I replied, "Huh? You sense something?" Era nodded, "Life. Something is alive in that chest. I can feel it." I had a bad feeling about what that meant. It would mean that something lived inside the chest, and we would be releasing it. Dr. Elora suggested, "I think if we are to open it, we should be prepared for a fight. Get your most powerful magic ready."

I nodded, "Alright, everyone, get back to the doorway. Be prepared to use everything you have when the time comes. I will unseal it and join you once it's open." Lulith chimed in, "Hurry up, kid. I don't have all day to watch you unlock an old dusty chest." I gave her an annoyed glance, "I'll consider this your test in the art of patience, Lulith." I grabbed a piece of paper from my journal and scribbled down a rune just in case things got ugly. Without wasting any more time, I took a dagger from my bag and began ripping apart the seal on the chest. Once the seal was off, I made a hasty retreat back to the crack in the rock, watching with the others through the opening.

We watched in awe as the chest began to shudder and vibrate. The complex seals on its surface shifted, some dissolving into nothingness while others rearranged themselves. It was as though the chest had a life of its own, a living puzzle waiting to be solved. Then, with a soft, echoing hum, the chest's lid began to creak open. Inside, a luminous, otherworldly figure began to materialize, its form shifting and changing as though the chest itself had birthed it. The figure, an ethereal being, was unleashed from its magical prison. For a fleeting moment, the figure's transformation was grotesque, a nightmare of twisted limbs and a monstrous visage. It resembled a grotesque amalgamation of our fears and horrors, a creature born of our own anxieties. The shock and terror it invoked in us were palpable, and we recoiled in horror, preparing ourselves for the fight that might ensue as my grip on my dagger tightened.

But just as swiftly as it had transformed into that monstrous form, the figure perhaps realizing the fear it had invoked. It rapidly shifted, its grotesque features morphing and contorting. It transformed once more, this time into a figure of a young boy. He appeared as a young boy, no older than twelve, and his features were striking. His porcelain skin seemed almost luminous in the dimly lit cavern, accentuating the fine lines of his face.

His hair, an ethereal silver, cascaded in loose waves, framing his delicate features. It seemed to shimmer as if it were woven from moonlight itself. His large, expressive eyes held a deep, almost cosmic shade of blue, like the clearest night sky. They sparkled with curiosity and intelligence, like a well of ancient knowledge. The boy's attire was equally fascinating. He wore a tunic that seemed to be made from an iridescent, almost liquid material, which shifted in color from deep indigo to amethyst as he moved. His slender fingers, adorned with delicate silver rings, danced with grace in the air as he regarded us. As I gazed upon him, it was as if I was looking at a living work of art, a creature of elegance and beauty, yet one that bore an aura of magic and intrigue.

With an innocent smile, the figure, now in the form of a young boy, looked at us and spoke, "Oh, my apologies. That must have been frightening. Is this better?" Its voice held a playful note, and its eyes shimmered with curiosity and mischief, no longer a source of terror but a fascinating enigma before us. The air around the boy pulsed with arcane energy as symbols finally began to dissolve around him, as if they had never existed to begin with. The transformation from before had caught me off guard. What exactly had we released? I felt immense energy from this being. I spoke up, my voice shaking slightly, "W-what are you?" The being in front of me spoke casually, "Lucius Evergold? Ah, fear not; I hold no ill will towards your group."

My breath caught in my throat. How did this thing know my name? My heart beat rose to 100 beats per minute. The being chuckled, "I can read your mind, boy. I know who you are, what you are doing here, and why you freed me." The being scanned the rest of the group, "Ah yes, Era Ashborn, Elora Nightwald, and Lulith Starmaze." My heart pounded like a drum as the realization struck me. This being could read my thoughts and knew every detail about us. Fear gnawed at the edges of my curiosity, but I had to keep my composure. "If you can read my mind, you know we mean you no harm," I replied with a shaky but determined voice. "We were simply curious about what lay within this chest. Can you tell us who you are and why you were sealed in here?" I cast a quick glance at my companions, whose expressions ranged from curiosity to concern, and then back at the mysterious figure, awaiting an answer.

"I've been trapped within this chest for centuries, young ones," it began, its voice now warm and filled with wisdom. "I am not your enemy, for I hold no grudges against those who've released me from my eternal prison. You may call me an entity of knowledge and ancient memory, bound to this chest by powerful enchantments." I lowered my guard a little; it seemed not to be as dangerous as I originally thought. The entity continued, "You may regard me as Quinn; it is not my real name, but it shall do for our purposes. I am one of the origin beasts created by the goddess Seraphina." Lulith chimed in, "Origin beasts? I have heard of the goddess, but what is an origin beast?"

Dr. Elora responded, "I have read about the origin beasts from some ancient texts that my team has deciphered thanks to Professor Princeton. It is said that when the goddess Seraphina was cast down from heaven, she created the twelve original origin beasts to act as generals for her army. I assumed it was just mere legend, though." Quinn smiled softly, "No, the goddess really does exist, although the stories have probably been distorted over time. I am an origin beast created by her hands, the original mimic meant to rule the entire mimic race. But something went wrong, and I was sealed away for millennia within that chest. Now, thanks to you, I am free."

Lulith, with her characteristic boldness, chimed in, "So, you're an all-powerful mimic king, huh? What are you planning to do now that you're out?" Quinn looked around at the group with a hint of sadness in his eyes. "I don't know, really. I've been trapped for so long, and I don't even know what the world is like now. All I want is freedom, but I promise I won't harm you. You have my word." I asked, "Who sealed you?" Quinn responded, "A powerful adventurer a long time ago from a kingdom that once existed underground. They feared my power, they feared the goddess Seraphina, and sealed me away deep in this cave."

Era glanced at Quinn, her eyes revealing a mix of curiosity and concern. "If Quinn is indeed an origin beast, there's much we could learn from him. But, Lucius, we mustn't let our guard down. Even though he seems friendly now, his motives might not align with ours." I nodded, "Alright, I think I get the picture. Very well, we will consider you an ally for now then." Quinn nodded, "You are right to have your guard up, but please be at ease. My powers will take time to fully come back. The seal has left my magic weaker than at my peak right now. I doubt I can do much to you. However, that being said, I still have enough power to be an asset."

With that settled, we had to decide what to do next. We came here originally for the stones. Did we want to venture deeper inside? I posed the question to the group, "With the professor wounded, should we head back?" Lulith tapped her fingers impatiently, "I came here for gemstones; leaving empty-handed now would be the same as going back a failure." Despite how she worded it, she did have a point. We came for the gemstones, and going back now would be considered a failure. Dr. Elora sighed, "I think I know what I have to do, even if it hurts to admit it. Lucius. Aurelia, and I will head back with the professor. Your group should be fine to head deeper into the cave."

Aurelia, who had been looming over the professor, regarded him sadly. "I was too weak to protect you, professor." She glanced up to Lulith, "Thank you for stabilizing him." Lulith cringed, seemingly not used to getting thanks. "I just did it to settle the debt from before." She turned away, embarrassed. Honestly, I think deep down Lulith wasn't that bad of a person. She may be jaded, but perhaps she is just not a very honest person. It made me wonder what exactly happened in Veilstead, but that was a question for another time. Dr. Elora put the professor onto her shoulders, giving him a piggyback. She seemed to struggle a little, but Aurelia seemed to be helping support him.

As they turned to leave, Dr. Elora reached into her pocket and handed me a small card. "Listen, kid, swing by my lab once you are back in town. I have an offer for you should you uncover any gems or inscriptions of interest. I am not asking for this for free, but rather, I think I can help you out with an invention." Her offer piqued my curiosity and hinted at potential collaborations in the future, a blend of our shared interests. With a nod of gratitude, they exited the room, leaving the four of us behind. Our expedition would continue, as we headed deeper into the cavern, ready to uncover the secrets hidden within its shadowed depths, with a new ally at hand.
