The Mountain God voiced a warning he would usually never utter, even if there was an inscrutable old monk reciting scriptures not far away.
For He knew where the opportunities from this mountain came from and who they were due to. When He was seeking for the way and pursuing the Dharma years ago, He never saw a monk of goodwill present him with the teachings of the scriptures.
He certainly could have kept silent, willingly accepting these benefits. After all, the monks passing down these teachings probably wouldn't mind either; they were already prepared for such offerings.
