According to the rules of the Trainer Guild, a trainer must possess at least a Class VI pet in order to undergo King-level Trainer certification; otherwise, they can only be classified as a Quasi-Master.
So when David Jones said he had no Class VI pets, the battle exam that hadn't yet started was already over.
After all, the reason why the Trainer Guild implements practical combat assessments in the King certification process is twofold: on one hand, it measures the strength of the trainer's pet, and on the other hand, it helps the newly ascended Class VI pets master the combat methods of a King through intense battles.
